It's a new entry for classic Stranglers hit Golden Brown from 1982, finally topping my chart thanks to a re-issued hit and belatedly giving the band a number one, having gone top 5 a few times from 1977 onwards, but never grabbing the top spot. The Bee Gees get another top 5, their first for 2 years in a 23-year-run of regular top 5's, albeit not every year. Elaine Paige's flop goes top 10 here, Well Almost...well, actually. Living Colour meanwhile get a sudden leap to 10 for a once-only happening as Love Rears It's Ugly Head.

Highest new track is a powerful banger from Gary Clail, Human Nature being part-social commentary at 11, and Bananarama get a high new entry at 14 with the unexpected Doobie Brothers cover, Long Train Coming - a US hit from 1973 that made the UK charts - and which works beautifully well, rifftastic. 10 years on from their cover of Yamasukis A'ie a mwana which Black Blood charted (for me) in 1975. Yamasukis was an alias of Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter's dad, doing experimental world music in 1971. Not a lot of people know that.

In a busy week for new stuff, James are in at 39 with their pop anthem Sit Down, still a great track, and sparking off a pretty fine run of singles for the 90's and beyond. Pete Wah! Wylie is also back with his 1986 top 10, Sinful, baggied up a bit with The Farm to lesser effect, in at 40. Enigma follow-up the monster fabness of Sadeness with a more modest chart position. Who's to blame for that? Mea Culpa! (Part II). A bunch of acts return with additions to chart runs, none of them that notable from the viewpoint of 30 years later, bar a couple:

The Rolling Stones Highwire sneaks in for a chart span of 22 years. and they aren't even halfway through their current span by that point! Kylie's sis joins in the chart success, as Dannii grabs some Love And Kisses at 71 kick-starting 16 years of UK chart success, some of her later stuff very good dance-based grooves. Meanwhile in the real world that week I went to see Bucks Fizz again, always a hits-filled great night out. Their records were, and continue to be via The Fizz 75% membership 40 years on from their debut, much much better than critics think. Pop is not a dirty word when it's done very well.

It's an invasion of more oldies as The Waterboys copy The Stranglers by entering an 80's classic in at number one, having peaked top 10 in 1985, and then became a reissued hit that did better second-time around. In the interim, I'd picked up the single in a record shop in Shaftesbury, Dorset (then famous for the Hovis cobblestoned hill advert, and future local town of Madonna when she moved onto an Estate with film-making hubbie, and co-incidentally now keeping her latest hit at 2 following a leap). Then in 1989 I heard it in a record store in the College town Burlington on the shores of Lake Champlain in Vermont, en route to Canada. I've always got anecdotes for music I hear, cos they stick with me pretty often and this time round it reminded me of the holiday, so fond memories.

Bananarama get a second consecutive top 3, and are still searching for that elusive chart-topper, as oldies from The Troggs (1966) and The Clash (1983) debut and return, respectively. OMD, essentially Andy & a mate by this time, return with a bit of a comeback, Sailing On The Seven Seas channelling Gary Glitter stomping backing tracks at 62 for an 11th year of chart action. The Simpsons get a follow-up that's actually better then the huge hit, and Julian Cope is back a decade since he was Reward-ing some exploding teardrops.

It's another oldie on top - sort of - as The Doobie Brothers 1973 classic Long Train Running is finally a UK chart hit, albeit in a dance cover version by Bananarama. So that's a first chart-topper for the gals after a decade of trying, and quite possibly this version inspired the remixed version of the original which will chart in a year or two. That's a Twofer! INXS keep the top 10's coming as By My Side goes where INXS first went with 1986's Kiss The Dirt. Cher can beat that though, as It's In His Kiss (I refuse to call it the stupid version of the title) goes where Linda Lewis first took it in 1975, and Cher makes it 20 years of solo top 10's and she's not yet half-way through her run of top 10's. Had I been charting then, it would have been 1965 (with Sonny on I Got You Babe) and 1966 (Bang Bang) as I loved them both at the time.

The Wonder Stuff do a spot of Arabian Nights - "Size of a cow" is a reference to the animated adventures in The Banana Splits Show, aimed at kids of the 60's (me) - and rocket to 11 from 47. Highest new entry is from Electronic, Get The Message, and the band is basically Bernard from New Order, Johnny from The Smiths and guests like Pet Shop Boys, so at least we were spared a new supergroup named Sumner Marr & Friends. This is their finest moment, a total groove.

OMD and The Shamen sail hyperreal seas into the 40, and Paul Young is back with his last big hit, assisting Italian crooner Zucchero on the pretty good Senza Una Donna, for an 8th year of hits, or 13 if you count his vocals on Streeband's Toast, though I prefer to forget it.

the beauty of discovering oldies as newies :cheer: I literally am still discovering oldies, from 1 year old to 85 years old

Well the Nanas single sales showed the public agreed with you  Me, I always loved that song and was grumpy it had never been a UK hit, so I went a bundle on the girls getting it recognition at last. I prefer I Heard A Rumour and Venus, granted.... :D

Oh no, I think you made a typo this week. Surely Rescue Me is the true #1?

No typo, I am keeping you in titilated suspense for as long as possible before the big climax reveal. It's something I enjoy doing  :teresa: All I will reveal is that, in overall chart position "sales" Rescue Me has made my all-time Top 800 on one chart run - and Long Train Running hasn't, oops! :teresa:

21st April 1991

It's yet another oldie entering on top, the third out of the last 4 weeks, as Carly Simon's classic 1972 song about Warren Beatty You're So Vain is reactivated in the UK, and finally reaches the top spot after going top 5 in early 1973 first time round. That keeps Madonna at 2 for a 3rd week, and I know of someone who's going to be divided over that 1/2 slot! Highest new new entry is The KLF, back for a 5th chart hit (including the Timelords) and a 4th top 10, with the fab Last Train To Trancentral straight in at 5.

The Mock Turtles get their one and only top 10, Can U Dig It? I can, and also James inviting me to Sit Down, the first of many top 10's. The Wonder Stuff also grab a top 10 slot, Belinda Carlisle has a spurt into the 20 with a Vision Of You, with Zucchero and Paul Young getting a bigger spurt to 21 despite being Without A Woman. Frances Nero debuts with the pleasant Footsteps Following You at 29, and Gloria Estefan keeps the chart entries coming fast with Seal Our Fate, not one of her best though, at 48.

Black Box and EMF string a few more together, Transvision Vamp stage a minor comeback, Sheena Easton ponders What Comes Naturally from the US charts and moves into an 11th year of hits, while Elvis Costello is all summery at 70 with his 14th year of songs.

oh poor Transmission Vamp, I still kinda liked the single but it was the beginning of the end for them sadly :/ like most act of there 80s/90s, 2 successful eras, then out

hah! Fret not, Madonna, I can reveal, will top my chart in the next one, I agree Mock Turtles and james are quite a lot better than Wonder Stuff by and large, though the latter were fun.

Did you’re so vain actually get an official rerelease in 1991?

Yes it did and it hit 41 in the UK charts - so close! Oldies only made my charts in the 90's if they were officially out again and charting, and CD singles were the main reason for all the re-issues, a whole new marketing opportunity for everyone that had already bought them on vinyl as they switched to CD and dumped the vinyl. Often they were really EP's with other bonus oldies on there to entice, and that applied to new singles as well - many's the time I bought a fairly tepid new single for the extra classic oldies, and that can sometimes explain how some pieces of ropey tat by more established acts inexplicably made the lower end of the UK charts

Some great chart toppers I missed there Pop! Especially love The Stranglers one of the greatest songs of the decade for me, an absolute classic. Great to see if top your chart in the 90s!!

28th April 1991

It's a first week on top for Madonna after 3 weeks at 2, as Rescue Me finally makes it 9 number one's for Madonna in 7 years of hits. That leaves The KLF with a second number 2, for now, and Electronic reach a new chart peak of 3 with latest track Get The Message outdoing most Smiths and New Order tracks. Paul Young & Zucchero go top 10, giving Paul Young 8 years' worth of 'em since Wherever I Lay My hat did the trick first. Highest new entry at 8 is from, errr Vic Reeves! The cult comedian, aided and assisted by Bob Mortimer on screen, cuts 60's classic croon tune Born Free, originally a hit for Matt Monroe from the 1966 film of the same name (animal rights movie for lions based on a true story) and written by James Bond songwriters John Barry & Don Black. It works as parody or as an actual revival. I loved the song and film as a kid, so I was obviously biased.

There are 18 new entries in a busy week and one re-entry as Enigma get a second top 20 with the return of Mea Culpa Part II at 11, following me getting it in a bargain bin as a 12-inch. Seal returns too, with new track Future Love Paradise straight in at 18, and the fabulous Touch Me (All Night Long) gives future hit songwriter Cathy Dennis a 3rd hit at 20, still a hot new popstar at that time. New at 21, it's a debut for a minor little band called Blur - There's No Other Way that they won't be following up this early Britpop gem. Nomad grab a follow-up at 23 with one I don't remember at all, Just A Groove - I guess it must have been, considering.

Queensryche bring a bit of Silent Lucidity to the top 40, and also popping in is Bev Bevan, he of The Move and ELO, moving onto his 3rd band for a 4th decade, as former Main Man Jeff Lynne is busy solo, Wilburying and making hit albums for superstars. Across The Universe sounded OK for a few weeks, though it wasn't in the same league as the previous bands. Still, 23 years of charting! Lindy Leyton is also still grabbing chart action off the back of Beats International, The Rembrandts debut with a decent track before Friends was a chart thing, now nobody associates them with anything else, and World Party return continuing the quality 80's run of singles.

Wilson Phillips extend their 3 minutes of fame, Marc Almond does another pointless remake of a classic Soft Cell track, Tainted Love is perfect as it is and needs no "improvement" or "update", other than to remind people that it's 10-years old. Roxette grab another good ballad, Fading Like A Flower, Deee Lite make it a 4th entry, Siouxsie gets involved with Pet Shop Boys producer Stephen Hague and Kiss Them For Me is great, going all Baggy Bhangra in a song about tragic movie actress Jayne Mansfield - a big fave of our family growing up, not least due to her surname namechecking our home town, and probably the first young celebrity death that stunned me as a child, getting beheaded in a car crash.

De La Soul keep the still-unavailable run of quality Daisy Age hits going with Ring Ring Ring, ZZ Top make it 7 years of action, and The Doors film kicks out another oldie hit, as Break On Through debuts.

5th May 1991

It's a first week on top for the 2nd chart-topper from The KLF, a banging dance epic still and now available on streaming after 3 decades absent from availability, Enigma get a 2nd top 5 track, and Belinda Carlisle adds to her run of top 10's while OMD are back in top echelon after missing out for the most part since last topping my chart in 1985 with So In Love, with the glam rock Sailing On The Seven Seas. Roxette grow a 55-place bloom as Fading Like A Flower hits 12, and Addams & Gee are back in the 40 with Chung Kuo rebounding to a new high of 17. Wilson Philips & Deee-Lite grab more top 40 spots as both 1990 chart-toppers stay good.

The Bee Gees new single is the highest new entry, When He's Gone being even better than Secret Love, albeit not as commercial, in at 46, REM get a quick follow-up with Silver, Beverley Craven is begging Promise Me, deep breath, with her debut which annoys if you hear it too much, Black make it 5 years of classy ballad action with Feel Like Change, The Farm keep 'em coming fast, and Jellyfish debut with a decent track. Meanwhile a-ha sneak in with a belated chart position for flop single Early Morning, courtesy of me seeing them in concert this week, they were great and underlined how their best stuff can be categorised as The Dramatic Ballad, tempo variable. The happier poppy stuff sticks out less (not that there's really much of that anyway).

12th May 1991

It's 2 weeks on top for the KLF, as Free's 1973 top 10 is back at 2 - their best record, Wishing Well gets a Bob Clearmountain spruce-up remix, which makes it sound sharper, though I'm unsure as to whether it sounds better than the original. It's loads better than the just-been-a-hit-yet-again All Right Now, but sadly didn't hit as well. ELO Part II aka Bev Bevan get a first, and last, top 10 with Honest Men, while Beverley Craven takes Promise Me (gasp) into the top 20 just before both started to annoy me a bit fairly quickly, but with corrected titles this week along with REM. I heard stuff on the radio and had to remember the title (and sometimes mis-remembered). I also didn't chart any Eurovision songs at all in this weekends contest as I couldnt recall their names either, but listed them instead in the Playlist under the country names. With the internet I can now correct that and bung them in at 76 and 77 as extras. Amina will go up, anyway, and should have won, but they gave it to the same-scoring Swedish pop-by-the-numbers entry instead. Amina was robbed! Classy.

Siouxsie rockets up to 14, on course for a last big hit after 13 years of them, and US singer Amy Grant is singing Baby Baby sweetly at 18, newly in. Jason Donovan is back with another SAW track, R.S.V.P. if you like it more than I do. In at 27. Talking of SAW, I'm shocked that the way-better Kylie track enters lower down at 52. She'll peak higher though! NKOTB, which I've always dyslexically read as KNOBS, return with Call It What You Want at 70. I call it another in a series of largely disposable pop singles, but not bad as such. It'll be 1998 before an ex-member releases a single that is better than their entire career. Give It To Me, Jordan...!
