France finished on last place in my ESC 1991 rankings. :) Malta was 14th from 22 countries.

Where is my favourite single from this year (British Eurovision entry - A Message To Your Heart) ?

hope Promise me keeps climbing, I remember I was obsessed with the song, bought the vinyl and was listening to it 24/7

I also loved that Susanna Hoffs song at the bottom, which was a Cindy Lauper cover

I can't remember tbh  I do remember getting annoyed by her breathing in sharply after each Promise Me to the extent that its become a pub quiz team mickeytake in the years since now and again. Oops! I did like her though :)

I didn't know unconditional love was a Cyndi lauper song - or if I did I've forgotten! :D

France last! Oops I bought the vinyl single and I think it will be going top 5 for me! I thought it was the best European since ooh milk and honey I think :)

I wasn't that keen on the UK entry so I'm not sure what will be in my next chart from the contest except Amina which def will be :D

Great to see Blurs first entry in your chart which I missed a few weeks back, start of what would be many entries I would assume!

Also the KLF ❤️ Love them!

Yes, Blur will keep having entries for as long as they release records I guess (still hoping!)

KLF, so OTT, so FAB :D

They are such an amazing band like. Coxon and Albarn are genius imo. Remember having an arguemrnt with my mates at uni that Blur were more talented than Oasis because of the uniqueness and distinctiveness of the different songs they produced whereas Oasis produced the same type of music each time.

That’s not to say the Gallagher bros weren’t genius too they were but Albarn could make any type of song and it was amazing. Still think Noel is the best songwriter though!

Noel the best songwriter? sure he has the ear to write catchy melodies universally loved

but his lyrics are silly and no-good at all, so he's more Max Martin than Leonard Cohen

Yes I'd go along with that too, Blur are more varied & interesting, and capable of creating genuine beauty, humour, aggression, joyousness and so on, Oasis were great with the anthems and singalongs but never diverted much from the Beatles/Glam Rock format - Blur were ironically closer to the Fabs in the willingness to musically experiment, though, even though they were more of the Kinks/punk school of Britrock.

Maybe

But his songs will be known a lot longer in popular culture.

It's a first week on top for a spruced-up 1973 Rock gem, as Free get a chart-topper belatedly with the fab Wishing Well. Meanwhile Soft Cell return Tainted Love into the top 10 for the 3rd time spurred on by Marc Almond's underwhelming new version which drops out the chart, first topped my chart 10 years earlier and still sounding great at 5. The Bee Gees make it 2 top 10's in a row as When He's Gone leaps to 6, and Siouxsie takes the Banshees' top 10's into 13 years, as Kiss Them For Me rises to 7. Jason Donovan gets a 4th top 10, RSVP I have to admit I havent heard in 30 years so no idea how it's weathered, and Amy Grant grabs a first with Baby Baby, a song I have heard recently.

Bob Marley's 1984 belated hit One Love is back at 22, while Color Me Badd are the highest new track with future UK chart-topper I Wanna Sex You Up, which is not nearly as racey as it sounds, merely decent teen soul pop. Pet Shop Boys' Behaviour track Jealousy is out as a final single off the album and debuts at 34, fairly modest for such a great showstopping ballad anthem. Crystal Waters debuts with Gypsy Woman at 40 - all together now, La Da Di La Da Da.

Sonia pops back with Only Fools at 46 as UK Eurovision entry Samantha Janus scrapes in and Amina climbs fast into the top 40 with the song that was unjustly pipped at the post. Sonia's Eurovision future is to be an improvement on Samantha's. Kylie's sis has some Success at 48, and Massive Attack's brilliant debut is followed-up by the fab Safe From Harm at 60. Paul Weller is having a Movement, looking Into Tomorrow he has just spotted his new album has topped the UK charts for a 6th solo and 8th time in total including The Jam & Style Council. Still not in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame though. Prob never heard of him, I'm guessing, not as if he has been around for 44 years or anything.

It's up to the top spot for a great forgotten Bee Gees track, the flop follow-up to a hit, When He's Gone. I've always loved their flops as much as the hits, never really got why some don't sell when they have a consistent good quality across their career. Anyways that makes a 5th for the band, with Robin an extra one solo, though they'd also been unlucky to peak at 2 on many occasions - but more chart-toppers still to come, new and old. In at 2, held off the top, The Doors reactivated classic Light My Fire is back 24 years on thanks to the movie about them, and it's their first top 10 20 years since Riders Of The Storm debuted. Jim Morrison never made my charts while he was alive.

Color Me Badd top the UK charts and climb into my top 10, Sonia leaps into the 20 ahead of Pet Shop Boys and Amina's Eurovision song, and we have two Minogue's in the 40 - Shocked at that Success! Highest new track is at 36 for Kirsty MacColl, and her fabulous Walking Down Madison, quite probably my fave track of hers, love it. Seal gets a quickie new track entry while he still has one on the list, and the radio fave Highway 5 crosses the Atlantic for The Blessing, but was out of step with the UK music scene by and large, sadly. Queen rush Headlong in at 57 for a final bit of new rocking Freddie.

T'Pau my favourite of the newies, I really thought it was a great comeback and I remember I was expecting it to be huge

but was only a minor hit sadly

Edited by Bjork

I’m surprised T’Pau had a top 20 hit in the chart in 1991, thought they faded when the 90s came. Also forgot to mention in earlier charts great to see OMD getting one of the biggest hits of their career this far into their releases!

I saw Carol Decker a few years back, still in fine voice! :)

Yes, T'Pau are one of those bands that had a lot more hits than people remember. I was very happy to see OMD back on hitmaking form, the album was great and the next single was the best track on it. I still love them, still making good music and touring fably. :)

2nd June 1991

It's a second week on top for The Bee Gees as Madonna strides in at for a case of 3rd-time lucky for Holiday. I bought the "Train" picture sleeve 7" in 1984 (quite collectible apparently) when it went top 5, then it peaked at 2 in 1985 as Madonna-mania took the world on, and now off the Complete Collection is it going to top the chart at last? Stay tuned. It;s a hectic chart week of loads of new entries and climbers, Sonia grabbing a rare top 10, her 2nd I think, and Pet Shop Boys taking the slow train to the top 10 with grower Jealousy. Pure class.

Kirsty MacColl is speeding down Madison up to 12 for her biggest track since Fairytale Of New York, and Massive Attack rush to get a 2nd top 20 in a row, Safe From Harm. The two Minogue sisters simultaneously do a top 20 double top, and REM also make it 2 in a row. In at 24, jan hammer returns with the better of his 2 TV instrumentals from Miami Vice, Crockett's Theme I recall set up for his wedding to Sheena Easton on the show - who goes top 40 as well. Banderas get a second top 40, She Sells, from their decent album, they deserved more success.

Salt 'n' Pepa come back with smooth r'n'b soul, Do You Want Me at 35, Gloria Estefan is back on ballad-duty with Remember Me With Love at 37, while T'Pau and Queen grab another top 40. Sixties oldie If You Wanna Happy suggests making an ugly woman your wife, not exactly PC even in 1991, but the Jimmy Soul classic is still fun, and let's be honest the good-looking women still dominate the media so sod 'em, a yay for the homely I say! In at 43. London Calling is back again, another Clash return 12 years on, and Lenny Kravitz' best record debuts at 54 - the very retro sounding It Ain't Over Till It's Over is pure classic soul.

PM Dawn must be thinking about Buffy's Giles 8 years early, as A Watcher's Point Of View looks in, and Boy George is back as Jesus Loves You with the terrific Generations Of Love, all psychedelia-flavoured, which is always going to get me on side. Herb Alpert is back again with another dance funk track, making it 22 years of charting, Pop Will Eat Itself are running a temperature, or rather are a bit cold actually, Sinead O'Connor pops in again 30 years ahead of announcing her retirement from the music biz, and singer/actor Harry Connick Jr does a Michael Buble 15 years earlier as he popularises crooning and swing-jazz for a new generation. Other pop stars in the chart who've had a go at acting in movies, TV or theatre? Bee Gees, Pet Shop Boys, Lenny Kravitz, Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Dannii Minogue, Sheena Easton, Elton John, The Beatles, Cher, Boy George, Chris Isaak. Cher won an Oscar. The others didn't win any acting gongs.

She Excels? wasn't it called She Sells?:D

Oops thanks Bjork. An early spreadsheet faux pas  Yes, I used to mis-hear announcements on the radio and correct them the following week from my notepad charts (all hand-written in those days) - there are lots and lots I haven't corrected properly. She Excels would be a great affirmative song title though.... :D

I actually think I prefer She Excels :D

Agreed and what an amazing band name!
