EDINBURGH

COME hell or high water, the show must go on. Certainly that was the attitude of the organisers of Hogmanay celebrations around Scotland at the time of this section going to press. Fitting in perfectly with that ethos are the synth kings of British music that just refuse to leave the pop party. The Pet Shop Boys are headlining this year's Royal Bank of Scotland Concert in the Gardens, but they will be accompanied by some stiff competition if gossip columns are to be believed.

While one assumes he has spent the best part of the tail end of 2006 sticking pins into a Gary Barlow doll, Robbie Williams is rumoured to be removing himself from his rock 'n' roll pile and heading for Edinburgh tonight to perform at least one track with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. 'She's Madonna', an ode to Madge, is a track on Williams' Rudebox album from this year and will be released as a joint Robbie/Pet Shop Boys single in January and Edinburgh is reportedly set for an exclusive live rendition. We've seen how much he loves the kilt, and he finished his tour in Australia nearly two weeks ago, so what better offer could the Robster possibly have for tonight?

Back to the billed main event - the Boys. That rare British beast of an act who can mix entertainment with biting satire - see 'I'm With Stupid' from this year's Fundamental album about Bush and Blair if you're quibbling with that last statement - Tennant and Lowe have spanned two decades of pop charts with their social and political observations set to keyboards and disco beats.

Not done dancing yet, they will be remixing The Killers' next single, 'Read My Mind' in the New Year, as well as a download remix of the Little Britain single 'I'm Gay (Get Over It)'.

Warming up for Pet Shop Boys will be the gravelly voiced Paolo Nutini, who was catapulted out of a Paisley chip shop at the start of this year and has never looked back. With a Top 10 album, These Streets, and a handful of singles under his belt already, the 19-year-old has spoken openly about struggling to keep up with his rapid rise through the British music scene. Sometimes painfully shy in print, Nutini has cemented an impressive reputation for himself on tour this year, and is set to play a record-breaking four nights at the Carling Academy in Glasgow next year.

Outwith the concert in the Gardens, the Street Party will be hosting the Waverley Stage as part of the Hogmanay celebrations in the capital, and topping the line up at that end of the street are The Fratellis. Hot footing it from their 8pm performance at Glasgow's George Square, the band are due to bring in the bells in Edinburgh, kicking off their set at 11pm. They are supported by the best thing to come out of Cumbernauld this year, The Dykeenies, and crowd-pleasers The Complete Stone Roses.

Essential information: Party packs, which include street passes and exclusive souvenir merchandise, are still available for tonight's event at time of going to press for £20. Log on to www.hubtickets.co.uk call 0131-473 2000 or collect at Edinburgh's Hogmanay Box Office, The Hub, Castlehill, in person before 5pm today for your chance to be at the biggest Hogmanay party in the world.

• Stages start at 10pm and finish at 1am.

I very much doubt he'll be there tonight. In fact it's doubtful anyone will be there tonight given the stormy weather.....

SLANG WHEN YOU'RE WINNIN'

EXCLUSIVE Robbie's learning Cockney

By Garry Johnson

ROBBIE Williams is learning Cockney rhyming slang - because he wants to play an East End gangster in a film.

He is studying old TV tapes of Minder and Only Fools And Horses in preparation.

The pop superstar wants to ditch his Stoke-on-Trent accent to play an ex-boxer turned East London "Mr Big". A source said: "Robbie read about the character in a book called Till Death Us Do Part and it blew him away.

"But he knows he has got to sound like a Cockney if he wants the part." Robbie, 32, whose hit albums include Swing When You're Winning, hopes Madonna's husband Guy "Lock, Stock" Ritchie will direct and has sent him the book. Here are some useful phrases for Robbie:

"You think you're a La Di Dah but you'll end up brown bread." ("You think you're a star but you'll end up dead").

"I've got lots of Bugs Bunny." ("I've got loads of money.")

I would so love him to appear. But If it ain't gonna be on tv they I don't really care

ROB'S URBAN REGENERATION

Eva Simpson & Caroline Hedley

ROBBIE Williams has told old pal Nicole Kidman to stick by her man Keith Urban who's in rehab with drink and drug issues.

Rob, who's stayed friends with Nicole since they made Somethin' Stupid together, emailed the Oscar winner urging her to be a 'rock' to her country crooner hubby.

Robbie told Nicole: "Please stick by Keith. He needs you now more than ever."

The singer, who's conquered his own drug demons, went on: "If he needs anyone to speak to about what he's going through, I'm here. I know what it's like."

Former crack addict Keith - who checked into rehab in the US shortly after he got married - flew to Australia to be with his wife just days ago. But he'll be back in the States completing his treatment in the New Year. He's also had stints in The Priory and Clouds in Wiltshire.

But where the experts have failed, eh Rob?

No idea if he was going to appear or not but it was all irrelevant anyway. The whole thing was cancelled because of the huge storm. :(

  we need a new thread for January

 Can't find any Robbie news out there to post yet
