Gaga releases promotional single Hair

10 years ago today Gaga released the (then 2nd, but now) 1st promotional single from the album as part of the iTunes Store's "Countdown to Born This Way" release. It was written and produced by Gaga and RedOne and features a saxophone solo by Clarence Clemons. The song addresses a teenage Gaga being made to dress a certain way but finding that the only way she could express herself during this was through her hair. With its message of self-liberation, individualism and empowerment it was a glorious way of building up further hype for the album a week before its release.

What are your thoughts on the song, 10 years on?

I love this commercial! Gaga is so fierce in it.

I remember thinking after TEOG music video premiered that this would've made a nice alternative for it, but looking back I am happy with what we got.

After months of teasing the release, 3 singles and a promotional track already released, Gaga finally dropped her second studio album: Born This Way. The dance-pop album complete with soaring synths and stunning sax moments incorperates a wealth of genres from electro-rock to techno. Lyrically it covers themes ranging from sexuality, religion, freedom, feminism, and individualism.

The album went on to receive Grammy Award nominations. It charted in the top 5 of every major music chart worldwide, topping many of them. In the US it sold more than one million copies in its first week (the highest total in 5 years). The album eventually placed 3rd in the best selling albums globally of the year and has continued to rack up millions of sales since.

The album has had a huge impact on a generation (and beyond) becoming the centrepiece album for many people struggling to find their identity and express themselves. It is no exxageration to say it saved the lives of some and helped to further cement the fandom that exists for Gaga. A hugely important album for many, it is celebrated to this day and continues to provoke inspiration and light for many in their darkest times.

What are your thoughts on the album, 10 years on?
