You and I music video premiers!

10 years ago, Gaga premiered the music video for You and I.

The video was filmed in Springfield, Nebraska and was directed by Lady Gaga's choreographer Laurieann Gibson. In the video, Gaga walks from New York City to Nebraska to get her boyfriend back. According to Gaga: "I'm walking with no luggage and no nothing and it's just me and my ankles are bleeding a little bit and there's grass stuck in my shoes and I've got this outfit on and it's real sort of New York clothing and I'm sprinting... And the [video is about the] idea that when you're away from someone you love, it's torture. I knew I wanted the video to be about me sprinting back and walking hundreds of thousands of miles to get him back.". The video also features Gaga's two alter egos: Jo Calderone, Gaga's male ego, and Yüyi, a mermaid.

She announced that the video would be the 1,000th tweet on her Twitter account. The video was originally planned to be released on August 18th but after parts of it leaked online, she moved the release forward, with the following tweet:

What are your thoughts on the video, 10 years later? Have another watch of it below:

Following the video's premiere on MTV, Gaga explained some of its scenes and her inspiration: "The video is quite complex in the way that the story is told, and it's meant to be slightly linear and slightly twisted and confusing, which is the way that love is."

Regarding the sexual intercourse scenes between actor Taylor Kinney and the singer as a mermaid, Gaga explained that it emphasized metaphorically that sometimes relationships did not work. "No matter what you do, there's this giant boundary between you and someone else. So that's what it's about, perceiving in your imagination that there's something magical inside of you that you can make it work"

After revealing that the wedding dress shown in the video belonged to her mother, Gaga explained the scenes involving the ice cream truck. According to her, they represented the destruction of her youth, experiences she had shared in earlier interviews. Explaining her decision to include them, Gaga said: "That's how I wanted to open the video, because I think it really sets up the rest of the story. It allows you to imagine you yourself are not just one person; you're so many. That person has so many stories and memories to draw from, and they all affect your journey profusely. I'm battered quite brutally at the beginning of the video, but at the end, I'm not battered; I'm a bit strange. It's not meant to be an answer video; it's meant to be a profuse number of the question."

When talking about Nebraska, where the video was set, Gaga stated: "It was so sweet, and I looked out and it's so beautiful, that tall corn... Then all of a sudden you start to see these monsters pop up. I love this place [Nebraska] so much, and it really comes from a genuine place. The person who I wrote this song about has been my buddy and my best friend since I was 19 years old, and he's from here."

The video doesn't rank as one of my personal favourites and I think there are a lot of scenes in there that don't really go with the theme/plot but there are some great moments in it.
I think every scene in this video is in its place and the theme was well executed.

Gaga attends, presents and performs at the 2011 MTV VMAs

On August 28th 2011, Gaga stepped onto the VMAs stage... sort of! Jo Calderone appeared at the VMA's in place of Gaga. Jo then continued to perform 'You & I' with Brian May. Jo also reappeared on stage to introduce the Britney Spears Tribute, to give Britney Spears the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, and to introduce Beyoncé Knowles' performance with Britney Spears.

She had four nominations this year, winning two with "Best Female Video" and "Best Video with a Message" being won by "Born This Way," and with "Judas" being nominated for "Best Art Direction" and "Best Choreography."

This was a wild night! I forget that she won 2 awards on it :') Jo was such a moment and so unexpected - jaw was on the ground throughout. While it isn't my favourite performance/awards night for her, it's certainly one of her most memorable and unique

I think it's because I was obsessed with and wanted to see GAGA but it was such a complete transformation and she didn't drop her character once all night that it seemed like Gaga wasn't actually there at all!

51xyZoh.jpg

On this day 10 years ago, Lady Gaga released the fifth and final single from this iconic era. She took to Twitter to announce the single's release and reveal its official artwork.

Before tweeting the artwork, she wrote: "This is my favorite song on the album. Are you ready @FERNANDOGARIBAY? This one is our baby."

An hour later, she wrote "Do you want the #MARRY THE NIGHT SINGLE COVER tonight?" and added "If monsters make MARRY THE NIGHT SINGLE COVER the number one trending topic I will release it tonight. Early. SORRY INTERSCOPE! I LOVE THEM!".

What do you think of the song and its artwork now, 10 years on?

Marry The Night is my second favourite single from Gaga. It is totally explosive and rousing with every listen. The sheer fire throughout it and untamed FIERCE PASSION that she sings with does things to me. I am so empowered every single time I hear it. It is the perfect example of Gaga's power over my emotions and state of being - she has the power to shift my mood every time I hear her.

Forever indebted to this song (and this era) for giving me strength and empowered life for the past decade!
