| 11 // 1000 Doves // 7.73

Just missing out on the top 10 is '1000 Doves', perhaps the most emotionally charged, and least "dancey" number on the album. The song is Gaga's cry for help - out of the anguish and pain she has suffered, she explores how she is unable to fly without the support from those around her. Gaga is extremely vulnerable but finds a strength that propels her skywards. She sings for freedom from the cage she is trapped in and of hope from the darkness she finds herself in. It's a truly glorious song with a heavenly chorus and message. On Spotify Gaga states: "I wrote this song as a cry for help. The song is a promise that I will continue to try just as I did in the beginning when it was hard. It achkowledges that we cannot do all things by ourselves. Sometimes we need help. That's ok."

A true favourite of mine on the album and gutted it couldn't sneak into the top 10. Has she ever sounded as vulnerable as she does on this? The lyrics break me.

I really want to know what causes her so much pain, it can't just be fibromyalgia, I feel like there is something that only people close to her know, a secret that maybe fans will never know.

I don't think it's solely physical pain, a lot of it is mental anguish. She felt suicidal throughout the creation of Chromatica. Sometimes there isn't a singular thing that causes it but possibly a combination of loads of things that affect mental health.

Who knows though, we can just hope that she is on the road to recovery ~

Is what I am seeing real, or is it just a sign?

| 10 // Enigma // 7.80

Kicking off the top 10, we have 'Enigma'. One of the first songs recorded for the album, it helped to shape the album as a whole through its sound and concept. Before the residency of the same name, Gaga teased some lyrics from the song. Apparently the album was initially planned to be called Enigma, before it was changed to Chromatica. Bloodpop describes how the song is a celebration of music, particularly the dance records that the team held in highest regard. Gaga, on Spotify, describes the song as follows: "The genesis of Lady Gaga as how I identify is something I've grappled with ever since I was 19. I don't know why I need this transformation to happen other than that the design of Lady Gaga is decidedly rebellious. I can break any stigmas about me at any time because I will constantly transform to escape them. This process by which I exist is a mystery to me, but I'm starting to understand it. I'm even starting to own it. I will always be misunderstood. Because I want to be."

'Enigma' is great and a whole heap of euphoric fun. It takes you on a proper journey and doesn't take itself too seriously. I love how its one of the founding songs of the era and the album's sound wouldn't be what it is today without this song. I think it's ranked fairly here however! ~10th is about where I thought it would be.
Love how she went to call the residency Enigma - I assume the song was first recorded in 2018 already. I like it, not the best song but essential in the concept and love the horns.

| 09 // Sour Candy // 7.91

The first and only promo single, released just a day before the album came, 'Sour Candy' is out at 9th place. A #1 song in some nations, top 10 in others and top 20 in the UK it is one of the best selling songs off the album. The song came from sessions away from the recording of Chromatica, but when it was given to Gaga and she added her touch on it (+ the inclusion of BLACKPINK) it fit perfectly in with the surrounding songs from the era. The project came naturally through a mutual respect between Gaga and BLACKPINK and their chemistry is undeniable on the song. The song celebrates female power and gives a very definite response to those that try to pigeon hole women. On Spotify, Gaga stated: "I resent that women are often expected to always be sweet or we're called b*tches. This song is an analog for that sentiment, and a polite middle finger".

As fun as it is, it's a tad too high for me in the rankings. Admittedly, it did grow a lot when rumours came it was being released so it's solid but definitely much lower down on my rankings for the album as a whole!
Blinks like this song more than monsters. I personally don't like it that much...

This is my dancefloor I fought for

| 08 // Free Woman // 8.00

In 8th place with a perfect score of 8, it's 'Free Woman'. A Euro-dance, 90s inspired banger, the song is about Gaga's own experiences and trauma of coping with her PTSD which she suffered after being sexually assaulted by a music producer. It is also a love-letter to the LGBT fans, and was written especially with the trans community in mind. The song is about reclaiming one's identity and the empowering message rings out loud throughout the song. A remix by Honey Dijon was released a few months into the album's campaign. On Spotify Gaga stated: "As someone who generally prefers things to be genderless, I ponder often why I chose to declare my womanhood in this song. I've realized that question is futile. Woman could be synonymous with any creative force. I'm proud of my womb, proud of yours, and proud of those who were born without wombs and have phantom ones. Every gender has a spirit womb. I believe this is hinged on creating with three things the same way a door has three hinges: a steady hand, knowing you can, and not needing a relationship to define your power. Before you know it if you are closed, you can open, just like a door."

:'(((((((((((((((((

a real favourite - a masterpiece that perfectly represents the desire to be free (from the pandemic). this song is everything <3

This version >>>>>>>. Alice's sister . Like, just listen to that beat, this is what I call MUSIC. She ruined the song in the final version just like she did with ARTPOP songs.
