December 10, 200618 yr eh? do you speak latin then? 80% of the english language is derived from 'old english'.. ie... saxon. theres also a big difference between a culture evolving, and a culture being lost to another invasive one. true, history is littered with culture changes in this tiny island, however for a thousand years our culture has evolved slowly under relatively stable times. (unlike the previous thousand years whereby we saw italian, german, norweigic and french invasions). im against one culture smothering another.. we arnt in the dark ages now, imagine, take this to its logical conclusion and every country on earth would eventually be americanised! variety is good, lets not lose it, or our/their identity. Not latin, but a language derived from latin, portuguese. Even english which is not a latin language had much latin influence, I highlited the words on your post that I think have latin origins. December 10, 200618 yr difference..... french origin culture......... latin evolving........latin invasive........ latin history..........latin reletively....... old english (although relative is latin) i misspelt it here stable............ old french imagine........ old french identity.........latin logic..............latin eventually.......latin conclude........ latin variety.......... latin well done!...lol.. i didnt know you were portugese as you use the english flag in your profile thingy... tbh i think that latin probably influenced most languages and that many words attributed as old english/norse/french are probably deeply rooted in latin, though the direct link has been lost.

I just selected the words that sound similar in English with the portuguese translation, so I supose the portuguese and english word had a common latin origin. I think even the words coming from french in fact have an older latin or greek origin.

December 12, 200618 yr I have no objection to America but I object to our language being Americanised, I am sick of ENGLISH people talking about malls and sidewalks and there are several other examples of American terms polluting our language, it irritates me as much as txt spk
December 12, 200618 yr I don't mind that much. It doesn't really harm me in any way lol. I don't get why if a lot of our words are latin why does it matter if some american words are used? Surely it's up to the person and what they want to say, whether we like it or not.

Surely it's up to the person and what they want to say, whether we like it or not. they arnt latin, they are derived from latin. i hate the americanisation of ENGLISH which is what they are supposed to be speaking! i hate adverts on tv with american accents, even though the product just doesnt warrant it. theres nothing big or special about americanising a product... the language is about standards, do we want our language, which is rich and poetic when used properly (ok ok unlike what i do!) and shouldnt be degraded... i mean, how many people now use the word 'summut' instead of 'something'?.. and look up the word thats often used... 'anythink'... i think youll find it doesnt exist!
December 12, 200618 yr This isn’t really a dialect issue and more of an accent issue, but I get so confused when people pronounce “th” like “f.” In Brighton once, I took a quick taxi trip and at the end the driver said “free.” I was like “wow!!! Are you sure??” And he looked at me strangely and said “yes, free.” I said “THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!” hopped out of the car and skipped away like a moron. Of course he had been saying “three” as in £3. Needless to say, he chased me down screaming and swearing.  Edited December 12, 200618 yr by Consie
