No hobnobbing with Robbie

By Tony Squires

December 10, 2006 12:00

DEAR Robbie (Williams), Just a short note to say it would really impress my girlfriend if you came up and spoke to me at your after-show party tonight.

I realise it's a big ask, after being on stage entertaining the masses for hours, to walk into a room full of strangers all desperate to dribble over you.

I won't do that. I'm really not that interested in talking to you, because it's always awkward, and you'll be looking over my shoulder trying to find Kyle Sandilands and so on and so forth. But "her indoors'', as you English say, is a very big fan.

In fact, it's a bit of a worry.

You know that stupid game couples play where they list three famous people who if, through some amazing accident or Notting Hill-style chance meeting, they got to - how do you say - shag, there would be no recriminations? (Yeah, right.)

Well, sadly, you're on her list.

Now that I think about it, that would be quite a tough game for you to play, since just about any person on the planet is within your well-tattooed reach. If you went, "Alright, darlin', I pick Natalie Imbruglia, Cate Blanchett and George Clooney, just to mix it up a bit,'' your partner would be terrified.

She might go: "But I saw you talking to Natalie at that club in London last week, and George Clooney always gives you a wink when we play tennis. Thankfully, you can't compete with Cate Blanchett's hubby - that Andrew Upton is to die for.''

See what I mean? Who do you choose? Dead people?

Anyway, the point is, it's actually quite emasculating now that I've said it - you being on her list and me trying to tee up a meeting. So just a short note to say it would really impress me if you didn't come up and speak to me at your after-showparty tonight.

What's more, I can tell my partner that I asked you not to talk to me, and you agreed not to talk to me, and how important am I that Robbie Williams would do what I asked, given that so many people are asking stuff and trying to suck up to his bottom, or whatever the expression is.

Thanks in advance, Rob.

Just to make it clear and simple for you when you're looking for the person not to talk to, my name is Tony. I'm quite large, but very shallow. I'll be wearing cream slacks, a cream and chocolate horizontal-striped polo and red runners.

Hang on a tick ... apparently I won't be wearing that after all. Women, eh? You think your life's your own, Robbie, and then ...

So, I'll be wearing jeans, a pink shirt, a dark, wide pin-striped coat and some kind of shoe. I think the white ones might be a little Tommy Try-hard, but we'll see. While I've got you, the whole after-party thing has already been good for me.

I was Christmas shopping at Bondi Junction on Thursday night (do you do that yourself, or have someone do it for you?) when my mobile phone text-message thingy went off. The message was this: "On Sunday you will receive details for the Sony Ericsson Optus After Party - ROBBIE WILLIAMS. Please reply now with your full name.''

So I did. Quite loudly. I read the message out to other shoppers, too. Everyone was excited for me, and agreed that I was terribly busy and important.

I started saying: "Sunday night ... Sunday night ... just trying to think what I've got on; if I'm available for Robbie's after-party. Oh, that's right - I'm going to Robbie's concert on Sunday night, so that's quite handy. It's worked out well for everybody.''

So, Rob, thanks so much for everything. Thanks not just for not talking to me tonight. Thanks for being, pound for pound, the greatest live entertainer on the planet. I've seen you before, and I believe that fervently.

And, mate, sorry about the English cricket team.

You've got to admit, however, that the final day of the Adelaide Test was some of the best television viewing in history. How good is Mike Hussey? How good is Ricky Ponting? How good is Shane Warne?

Anyway, enjoy Sydney. I know you've admitted you were pretty much plastered for your last visit. Good man.

See you tonight.

can't wait for his report and pictures

hope he can get online soon and tell all about it :cheer:
I also can't wait for Ossy report and pictures. :yahoo:

Let me ... entertain myself

Reviewed by Bernard Zuel

December 11, 2006

Robbie Williams, Sydney Football Stadium, December 9

Robbie Williams is a great performer and probably the best showman and outright entertainer of his generation.

His tours here in 2001 and 2003 were masterful displays of first arena, and then stadium pop shows: mixing spectacle with intimacy and irony with sincerity.

He is a good singer, a witty and frank lyricist and, thanks to songwriting collaborations with Guy Barlow  and Stephen Duffy, he possesses easily the best mainstream pop catalogue of the past decade, from Angels to Advertising Space.

This does not, however, allow him to put on a show as indulgent and selfish as this one.

For starters, the sound was appalling. In my distant eyrie the music's bottom end was boomingly stygian, while the high end may as well have been sent via a cheap loudhailer two suburbs away. (The middle range? It was probably still in the dressing room watching the swimming.)

The poor sonic quality certainly didn't help, but these days we know that ensuring good sound outdoors for the audience is one of the last considerations on the tour checklist. If it's there at all.

My problem was this: while three years ago Williams seemed bored with performing but still sang with gusto, on this night he barely sang half the time, allowing the backing singers, the audience or the music to fill in the gaps.

The long chats between songs which, in the past were cheeky/cocky/funny interludes, this time descended into time-wasting distractions. He spent almost 15 minutes with his best mate Johnny Wilkes doing a kind of old-school RSL club cabaret shtick with hammy scripted banter, a poxy Me And My Shadow (which wouldn't have passed muster on even the weakest Don Lane Show nights) and a messy run through one of his many excellent ballads, Strong.

Of course the stadium full of fans went nuts. When don't they? It is still astonishing how little people expect from performers, or alternatively, how much people are willing to accept. Maybe it's because they have already spent their $100-$150 and fought through the traffic and crowds and don't want to believe that this money and effort has been wasted.

Maybe it's the sheer thrill of being in the same space as the star, that intoxicating whiff of proximity. Maybe it is a need for approbation - wow, he said something nice about Sydney or Australia, that calls for a mighty cheer. Maybe it is as simple as just hearing your favourite songs played loudly.

But Robbie, just because you can get away with it, doesn't mean you should.

:(

This Guy seems to have missed the point ( as well as getting Guy Chambers mixed up with Guy Barlow - Ahem ). The idea at a Robbie concert is Robbie to sing - us to sing - the backing singers to sing - looks like the guy dosen't know who to enjoy himself.

Has he ever heard that sharing is caring.

Well I am back after the most amazing weekend. I am not the best with words but he was absolutely phenomenal this weekend...both nights. And I will also say what a load of dribble that above article is  . Where was he sitting....the sound was absolutely superb and Rob was hilarious.

We had IS seats on Sat night and I couldn't have picked better seats myself. On the left hand side looking at the stage, opposite the circle about 5 rows from the front. I was almost just as close as some down on the field...thank you IS. The people around us were brilliant and were up on their feet from the beginning of the close encounters theme until the lights went up at the end and we eventually accepted that he wasn't gonna come back. It makes such a difference when everyone around you is singing and dancing just as much as you, and I looked around regularly and the whole stadium were always on their feet dancing...it was a magnificient sight.

The show was even more spectacular than I imagined. The stage, lighting, and pyrotechnics were breathtaking, and the sound was absolutely perfect. The man himself was relaxed, happy, joking, having fun, always smiling, and his voice sounded amazing. My husband and I had an absolutley amazing experience.

Day 2 was line up day and it was an absolute joy. Thanks so much to Monsoonangel and kianakat from TRWS (you are both such amazing girls) and especially cherrypie who adopted me for the day (you are such a beautiful girl and it was a pleasure to meet you). We were in the front 'pen' thank goodness (thanks to cherrypie getting there at 6.30 ) and there were probably only about 50 people in that bit. The guys we met in line were absolute gentlemen and they took great care of us...thank you so much and I hope you make it on the site. It's also great to meet guys who appreciate his talent as much as you. It was great to finally meet Tania and friends during the day and I look forwad to lining up with you next weekend . Getting through the gates was handled well by the security as our small group was let in first so there was no mad stampede (for us anyway) and we made it to the front at the left hand side of the circle quite easily (it was a brilliant spot ).

I cannot express what it was like to see him so close...he is just so beautiful . He was on equally top form Sunday night too and to see the full effects on the stage was absolutely amazing. Still happy and chatty and hilarious and sang brilliantly. The crowd were well into it where we were.....the only thing thats missing is that you can't see the full crowds response. He didn't do Kids but sang a bit of Feel at the end which was just beautiful.

It was funny...my hubby met me and we had a 30 minute walk to the apartment and he kept telling me to slow down I was so pumped. We had a bight at Mcdonalds and when we got up my feet were absolutley killing me and when I took my shoes off I had a huge busted blister and the skin underneath that was starting to blister....funny how I didn't even notice it until later lol.

So I had an amazing weekend. Our man is beyond compare and the whole country is in love with him at the moment and I couldn't be more proud .

I have some good pics which I will post up later, including a great one of the birdies
