How Bizzare

I just remember that Rob said the reason he's not doing more Dublin dates is due to the World cup. But that starts tonight so he could've easily done more. -_-

He couldn't add Sturday night in Dublin, because the whole tour is timed to ensure that no dates clash with any England matches :) You would think they could have done another date though - as the demand is obviosuly there <_<

He'll be on stage in a couple of hours  I'll be sitting at home :( looking forward to all teh reports though

This is the very latest photo added to Stephen Duffy's website. It is titled simply 'Stage'.

I'm assuming it must be the Robbie stage for tonight.

Stadium pop like no other

Cameron Adams

June 17, 2006

ROBBIE Williams has always been a brutally honest pop star, but now that trait may cost him a fortune.

Williams told 80,000 fans at Dublin's Croke Park Stadium, where he opened his Close Encounters world tour last Friday, he'd been "s---" during the show and would make amends with a free concert.

Transporting the entire show back to Dublin, one of his largest markets, will be a costly exercise, but it's more proof that Williams isn't like other pop stars.

Although observers at the concert thought it wasn't his finest hour – Williams was seemingly on autopilot and sang too many ballads in a row – you could easily see how the tour will be a well-oiled machine by the time it hits Australia at the end of the year.

At times Williams didn't seem "match fit": "I don't know how Mick Jagger does this," he gasped. "Here I am at 32 and I'm knackered. He's about 105 and still he is getting around."

In a departure from his album launch in Germany last year, Williams wisely has dumped many songs from the less-than-amazing Intensive Care, instead filling his set list with some older hits.

Indeed, the only real risk he takes is to open with the left-field Radio; from then on it's pure showman all the way.

The mammoth stage set, it must be said, is amazing. And, more amazingly, he's bringing the whole rig to Australia rather than the usual budget touring version we get Down Under.

Inspired by U2, the stage is framed by two huge arms with screens that flash up random words and phrases (very U2), play offcuts from Williams videos and provide close-ups of his multiple tattoos and bare flesh.

Recent hit Tripping is given a soulful reworking, and his anthems – Feel, Angels and Rock DJ – remain crowd-pleasers.

However, it was only on the emotional wound-opener Come Undone that Williams actually looked as if he was feeling what he was singing, rather than just entertaining.

The dire Stones-pastiche A Place to Crash took up valuable space that songs such as Old Before I Die, Let Love Be Your Energy or Supreme could have filled.

One diversion into his swing period (Me and My Shadow with his best mate, Jonathan Wilkes) was bad cabaret.

There was also nothing from his new electronic album, which is said to include a cover of Kiss Me, the 1980s hit by his songwriting partner, Stephen Duffy.

But Williams was bold enough to reclaim his past, performing a note-perfect version of Take That's classic Back For Good – and not the ironic punk version he once bitterly spat out.

The singer even noted that he has caught up with all his former bandmates: "We all love each other again," he declared.

However, he couldn't join them on stage because he was doing his own world tour and, anyway, he said he was always far too busy.

The stage snakes out into the crowd, bringing Williams close to fans – and fans' chests.

At one point he turned the camera to the front row and exclaimed: "I love tits!"

And during the encore of Let Me Entertain You Williams made a tit of himself.

Appearing at the top of the stage scaffolding, from where fireworks had earlier gone off, the singer, in a white tracksuit with his initials RPW where the Adidas logo should be, started singing This is Spinal Tap instead of his usual lyrics.

As his bandmates looked towards the heavens, it was clear something wasn't right.

A gondola designed to bring Williams down from the clouds malfunctioned, leaving him to descend the stairs and finish the song.

But when he can pull out Angels as an encore, he can get away with murder.

And even with a few teething problems, no one gives such an intriguing display of stadium pop as Robbie Williams.

Robbie Williams plays Brisbane Suncorp Stadium on December 13 and 14.
