The Ordinary Boys and Basement Jaxx have been announced as support acts on Robbie Williams’ World Tour.

Celebrity Big Brother star Preston’s band and dance act Basement Jaxx will join the star on the European leg of his 2006 extravaganza.

After a concert today at the ABSA Stadium in Durban, South Africa, Robbie will perform to more than 2.6 million fans worldwide.

The first of the 14 European dates will be in Dublin on June 9.

An announcement about the change of venue from England's Wembley Stadium – following the building delays – is expected later this month, when additional tickets will also be made available.

Robbie’s eighth album Intensive Care has topped the charts in 18 countries and sold 5.7 million copies to date.

Last year the former Take That singer smashed a Guinness World Record by selling more than 1.6 million concert tickets on the first day of sale, valued at an estimated £80m (€115.2m).

Robbie Williams fans, start your engines!

Robbie fever: Robbie Williams Photo: AFP

April 10, 2006

By Sally Scott and Reuters

Robbie Williams fans start your engines, your man has been here for two days (he flew into Durban on Saturday, having changed his original plans to arrive this morning) and is now raring to go.

Williams, who has been keeping a pretty low profile in Cape Town for the past two weeks but has managed to party as well, is promising to rock the socks off this city. He opens his world tour here today in front of 40 000 fans, many of whom have flown in from overseas.

Preparations for the show, especially the actual staging, are very hush-hush.

Williams, who is a showman of note, has brought 35 of his own crew with him. In the business, Williams and his production team are known for laying on spectacular concerts. So expect the unexpected.

It is his first tour in three years, and entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the fastest selling concert after 1.6 million tickets worth $187 million (R1.1 billion) sold out in hours on November 19.

For those wanting to be at the forefront of things - within hand-shake distance if he does a duck into the pit, there are two holding areas (one for golden circle, one for field tickets) that have been open since 10am this morning.

Arm bands are being handed out for those in the holding areas so that they can leave the area and return when the gates open at 5pm.

UK support act Wired Daisies are due to open the concert at 6.30pm, followed by Freshly Ground at 7.30pm and then Robbie at 9pm.

While Durban is the first stop in his five-month world tour, including 40 concerts in 14 countries, the savvy entertainer achieves another milestone today when a new cellphone is launched that includes a link into Robbie Williams's website and plays his songs

.

It is another step in a "digital revolution" that the recording industry must take advantage of, not spurn, his manager said.

The "Walkman" phone to be unveiled today contains Williams's music and live video clips.

Williams, one of Europe's most successful entertainers, has angered music industry executives in the past by praising internet piracy, once even calling it a "great idea".

In an interview before the British pop singer's world tour, his manager Tim Clark said the industry should classify digital music seekers as customers, not criminals.

Defending the piracy comments, Clark said: "The recording companies are taking a big stick to people who are not criminals at all.

"What Williams means is that if we can't provide the fans with the wherewithal to do it (download) legally, frankly it's our fault and not theirs.

"If they're not providing the carrots, they're leaving it to others who will."

Clark said Williams, who in October live-streamed a Berlin concert to 100 000 mobile phones, wanted to push the "digital revolution" further. He said the new phone deal made with T-Mobile and Sony Ericsson was just another step towards that aim.

Robbie Williams kicks off World Tour

As we speak Robbie is taking to the stage at the ABSA stadium in Durban at the start of his world tour

Robbie is performing to a crowd of over 52000. He then jets to Cape Town for his show on the 13th April and from there to Pretoria for the concert on the 17th.

After South Africa, the tour will continue across Europe with Robbie visiting 14 different countries, on 44 different dates and playing to over 2.6 million fans worldwide. This leg of the tour culminates in the UK - an announcement regarding the change of venue from Wembley will be made towards the end of April. Watch this space. The good news is that additional tickets will be made available to satisfy those disappointed when the original allocation of 360,000 sold out in 2 hours.

Robbie’s eighth album ‘Intensive Care’ has now topped the charts in a staggering 18 countries around the world and sold 5.7 Million copies to date. Last year Robbie smashed another Guinness World Record by selling over 1.6 million concert tickets on the first day of sale.

Robbie’s over-the-counter first week sales of ‘Intensive Care’ in the UK were almost 20% higher than his previous fastest-selling album release in 2004 – ‘Greatest Hits’. More than 373,000 copies of the album were sold in the UK first week, making it the second fastest selling album of the year and the fourth fastest selling album since records began. At one point ‘Intensive Care’ was selling at the rate of nine copies per second in the UK. ‘Intensive Care’ has dominated the digital charts since its release, sitting at No.1 in the iTunes chart in 14 out of 20 territories. The album peaked at No. 4 position in the US, where the album is only released digitally.

Robbie Williams' global solo album sales currently stand in excess of 50 million copies. Robbie has amassed a record 15 Brit Awards, three Ivor Novellos, a Q Magazine Classic Songwriting Award and all manner of worldwide MTV gongs. ‘Live at Knebworth’, the commemorative album recorded over three nights in 2003, holds the title of fastest selling live album in the UK. Robbie Williams has accrued an impressive 24 top ten singles in the UK alone. Seven out of eight of his albums have also reached No. 1.

:cheer: OMG keeping everything crossed for him and it hurts like hell. Should be getting the reports from Radio Durban soon. I just want to be there to support him!

ROCKING ROBBIE HAS DURBAN SCREAMING FOR MORE

The Mercury

Let me entertain you British pop star Robbie Williams toys with the crowd during the first leg of his South African tour at Durban's Absa Stadium last night. Heavy rain early in the evening did not dampen the spirits of his fans, who turned out in droves to catch one of the world's most noted performers in action.

Rocking Robbie has Durban screaming for more...

Despite heavy rain early in the evening, the 45 000 people who packed into Durban's Absa Stadium for the first leg of British pop icon Robbie Williams's South African tour were not disappointed as the charismatic star rocked the stadium with his usual style and enthusiasm.

The concert opened with what looked like balls of fire shooting out from the stage as Williams, clad in a black trench coat, rose from the floor through a trapdoor, much to the screaming audience's delight. He opened with one of his biggest hits, Radio.

Throughout the performance Williams, always the entertainer, played and talked with the crowd, building them up before performing every one of his chart-topping singles.

He walked up and down a ramp built in the middle of the stage and spoke about Durban and how its people had made him feel welcome. Hit after hit, word after word, Williams had the crowd screaming and wanting more.

Towards the end of the two-hour show he invited three girls and their mother on stage to meet him and share in the on-stage action. Williams closed with one of his biggest hits, Angels.

Earlier in the evening, Williams was preceded on stage by South African favourites Freshly Ground, whose hit, Doo Be Doo, was a crowd favourite and provoked a mass sing-along.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS HOTS UP THE STAGE...

http://www.therobbiewilliamssite.com/SA.jpg

He came, he sang and he took Durban by the scruff of the neck and shook it - and we, in turn, turned out en masse to celebrate the fact that raunchy Robbie Williams was starting his world tour right here in our city. We're not speed dating here, (although a large percentage of the women at last night's concert - ranging in age from 9-year-old Colby to 75-year-old Grace - "He can put his shoes under my bed..." - wouldn't have said no to Robbie).

He's got the gift of the gab and the lad was just giving us all the chat up. And boy does he have a fine line in chat.

Over two hours, between delivering pop classics like Rock DJ, Kids, Millennium, Let Me Entertain You and the lighters-in-the-air anthem Angels plus the newies, Advertising Space, Come Undone, Make Me Pure and Sin, Sin, Sin, plus a nod to that boy band - Take That - with Back For Good, Williams regaled a capacity crowd of over 40 000 with tales of his best mate's wife "her waters broke tonight", questions on the fit of his jeans "does my arse look big in this?" and lessons in spelling: "Regarding this banner girls, knob is spelt with a k."

Clutching a red G-string thrown at him, Williams rampaged up and down the three-pronged stage, winking, wriggling, getting the girls all hot under the collar and, dare one mention it, literally charming the bras off several women in the crowd.

As one who succumbed put it afterwards: "For some reason I lifted my top up and bared all. Thank God my boyfriend wasn't here."

So no, he ain't the best singer in the world, he even stuffed up some of his own lyrics. He's also had some really rough, self-imposed patches in life and made nude videos where ravenous female fans fed on his flesh, but the man's got what Simon Cowell calls the X Factor - in spades.

Rude, crude and yes as he admits himself: "I apologise for my language it's fu***** awful", he can sweat it up in a frock coat and leap around in a track suit (neither suited to our humidity).

One regret, no tracks from his album of classic Sinatra and co. standards, Swing When You're Winning. Robbie, you'll have to come back and bring a tux next time.
