Posted August 31, 20213 yr Was thinking about this story a fair bit last night. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/aug/...ing-video-games They're restricting the amount of time anyone under the age of 18 can play online video games, for an hour a day, specifically 2000 to 2100, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. On the one hand, online games are generally predatory with the amount that they weaponise addiction but on the other, and I say this thinking about some of my students, jesus poor kids being restricted so arbitrarily.
August 31, 20213 yr How barbaric. I'm sure the "evidence" about video games being fundamentally detrimental is flimsy as best.
September 1, 20213 yr I'm guessing this is mostly collateral damage from the Chinese government cracking down on any underage internet interaction after what happened with Kris Wu and other famous Chinese celebrities (Youth With You, a survival show in China, got cancelled for the same reason). I get why this is somewhat necessary but the execution is bordering on draconian and kinda dumb to censor young minds. idk what's gonna happen with professional Chinese gamers, if some of them are underage this would likely affect their livelihoods and training
September 1, 20213 yr Author That's another thing, it's going to really harm the progression of Chinese eSports, and they have a lot of potential there - just like physical sports the peaks for competitive play are at a young age. Perhaps they'd give special dispensation when that becomes apparent.
