I never warmed to Can't Speak French :(

 

The Promise is great - the singles from this era were the best <3

I got The Promise on CD a few years after it came out in HMV Westfield by complete chance! A random but amazing find.

Many fans were a bit dismayed that they chose Can't Speak French over Girl Overboard, but I was happy! It's so quirky and catchy, and I loved how much of a long runner it was in the chart - 20 weeks Top 75 was quite unusual for them!

 

The Promise :wub: The hype for this radio premiere was huge on the forums I went on. Myself and a few others were initially a little let down by it, but it grew so quickly and during the promotion it really seemed like it was connecting with the public. It felt like it was shaping up to be a #1, but I didn't let myself get too carried away. But after that X Factor performance, the stars aligned. It became the fastest selling single of 2008, up to their week of release, which indicates just how huge it was!

 

I have lovely memories of this single release, it was a wonderful time to be a Girls Aloud fan :wub:

The Loving Kind was an instant Out of Control highlight for me, I'm so pleased it was a single (and just about got them their 20th consecutive top 10!!)

The Loving Kind :wub: The 20th Top 10 in a row (and it was a close run thing, with it reaching #10 and being just 520 sales ahead of #11!!)

 

This is beautiful :heart: It deserved to be way bigger than it is. It was another UK airplay #1 so I'm not sure what went wrong (if going Top 10 can be considered going wrong).

I prefer the album version of this but the single mix makes for a great sharp listen. I've added the album version to the end of the playlist if anyone wants to peep it as well :heart: (and it's a better song to end on than BCYLM x)

Untouchable! My #1 Girls Aloud song. I find the lyrics absolutely stunning and empowering, the production is sublime too.

#11 honestly hurt me a bit :drama: Particularly for a song as high quality as Untouchable. But they only did one TV performance for this, some weeks in advance of release.

 

I've never been too enamoured with the changes made from the album version, particularly the vocoder parts. It's still great, of course, but I think it slightly lost at least some of the specialness it has in its album form. Still, it deserved way more than #11.

 

:wub: "In my dreams it feels like we are forty stories tall / it feels like we aren't ever gonna fall" is such a beautiful lyric.

Something New is GREAT and such a statement. So loud, in your face - exactly what Girls Aloud were when they first started. A perfect greatest hits lead single :clap:

Something New is the best girlgroup comeback to date.

Something New is my personal favourite, it's incredible :wub: the sheer wave of excitement it brought me at the time was incomparable. So many quotable lines and every member truly brings it. Sarah's verse :heart: :cheeseblock:

 

This still holds the record for most weeks at #1 on my personal chart with 8! (2, then 5, then 1 in three stints)

Now this is how you do a comeback! Instantly one of their very best songs to me. Clearly many didn't share the same view as me though :lol: I was a bit :( at it being divisive and having such a short chart run. I guess for some ears it's just too abrasive, but to me it's just everything. Love love love.
