New Romantic was a New Wave Music genre and fashion movement that occurred primarily in England during the early 1980s. The genre emerged after the London punk scene had come to an end, with former members of the movement splintering into Hardcore Punk, the New Romantic, Gothic Rock and postpunk movements.

The New Romantic phenomenon was similar to that of glam rock during the early 1970s, in that (male) New Romantics dressed in effeminate clothing, often with frilly "fop" shirts, and wore cosmetics. David Bowie was an obvious influence and interestingly his 1980 single "Fashion" was influenced by and was simultaneously considered to be something of an anthem for the New Romantics, as were Brian Eno and Roxy Music.

The main musical and stylistic proponents of the New Romantic movement were Spandau Ballet, ABC, Visage, Ultravox, Landscape, Adam & the Ants, and Duran Duran especially during the period from mid-1979 to mid-1982. Other bands of the era which were later associated with the New Romantic movement include Japan, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Soft Cell, The Human League, Eurythmics, OMD, Tears for Fears, A Flock of Seagulls and Talk Talk.

I used to like most of the music by these bands, any other fans.

i considered 'new romantics' to be glam rockers with style!...lol.

the movement emerged out of steve stranges nightclub (bugger, forgot the name!!!) .

i loved the early sounds, but many 'sold out' to pop after they gained recognition. spandau, adam, duran, human league... all had their best work, most inovotive within their first few singles, after that they did just pop.

'fade to grey', 'sound of the crowd', 'kings of the wild fronteer' were imho the best tracks... i still listen to 'dare', love it.

well i dont know if all those bands listed above are all new romantic or not. isnt it mostly just loads of men in make-up???

wouldnt like to see tears for fear in loads of make up :puke2: could be quite disturbing

even though Closest Thing To Heaven was one of the worst turd-like things i have ever heard.

actually i like that song from starter for ten which sounds much more like a post-punk alternative track and sits alongside all the cure tracks and psycadelic furs. v good.

and obv they soundtracks donnie darko in a brilliant scene

also Princes William's Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium on 1 July has duran duran and bryan ferry which seems a good fit (they must DUET!!! honk honk wibble wibble) as roxy music look like one of the main influences along with bowie.

then again i dont know if bowie is new romantic or not or was just jumping on the bandwagon???

seems to be kinda similarities with the punk thing where that seems to be the 100 club in london. think the name of the nightclub was blitz kids. think the documentary had boy george as a cloakroom attendent or something like that???

thats the one from that really bad record they did last year/yr before. i know its a bit more retroactive than truely retro but think anyone would rather be stuck in a phone booth with Gary Jules on rpt for 48 hrs than listen to THAT track again. the film songs better (still dont know the starter for ten song)

the best Human League album to get is 'Dare' - it's a seminal record, still sounds great today and there's not a duff track in sight - however, the 2 League albums above are both good.

I loved Tears for Fears - but Everybody Loves a Happy Ending was a shockingly bad album - not only that, isn't that possibly the ugliest album sleeve you've ever seen? Vile.

New Romantics... for one, Soft Cell were in no way New Romantic at all - they weren't ever considered part of that movement - New Romantics were the foppy, glam, lip-glossed bast*rd children of Roxy Music, Eno-era.

Visage were great - however, they released far better records than Fade to Grey - 1982's 'The Anvil' album is superb - especially the title track - well worth checking out.

the richard x vs liberty x track was a clever marriage of chakka khans 'aint nobody' and the human leagues 'being boiled'. hes used the human league on several occassions, but my memory has slipped...lol.

this is the original versh. the mix i wanna know is from the hits.

like a mash up of re-recording of a mash up. a true bast*rd pop experiment!!!

but Dare is the big pop record though with all those hits from adverts, more intersted in the these two albums. more experimental they say. sound interesting

its a frickin eye-sore, so bad that even Taschen would not even use it for a book on the worst graphics ever :puke2: :puke2:

with the crazy frog. Gut was probably in the running for worst record label ever, however they put out the Sparks album and that got v good reviews. and tbh actually quite like this record here.

i got the impression that new romantics were more a London centered culture (with a daytrip the third saturday of each month to Birmingham) with Soft Cell/Marc Almond being much more Northern with loads of Northern Soul stuff covered.
