Spain are once again changing up their selection process after another disappointing result in Rotterdam. They're bringing a bit of Sanremo to Benidorm!

Those wishing to apply must be at least 16 years old as of May 1st 2022 and have either Spanish nationality or permanent residence in Spain. In the event of groups applying, the Spanish nationality must apply to at least 50% of the group.

Authors and composers of entries may submit a maximum of one entry in which they are the main author, they may submit an additional two entries maximum if they are co-authors.

All performers interested may only submit one entry for consideration but may be credited for other entries as authors and composers provided they follow the above rules.

In terms of the entries themselves, to comply with the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest they must be original songs and cannot exceed 3 minutes in length. The songs should be predominantly in Spanish of co-official languages of Spain, with a limit of 35% of each entry being permitted to be sung in foreign languages.

Javiera Mena!!!

It's actually out there already, sounds brilliant as usual from her:

Not sure if all of the others are out yet.

Wow, Javiera Mena is not a name I ever expected to see in this forum. Not least because she isn't European lol, not that that's wildly outside the norm for Eurovision but still. National finals this year really serving the BJSC all stars xx (especially with Marta and Rigoberta on there too)
Rigoberta Bandini!! Summon Addy!

OMG :cheeseblock:

Can't wait to listen to their song and also live performance...her band is so cool!!!

All fourteen songs are out on the RTVE website. Overall it seems to be a big step up from the usual Spanish NF fare, particularly this one from Rayden;

So the quality of all entries are shockingly good in this first Benidorm Festival. The songs which are getting a biggest public acclaim are:

1. Tanxugueiras - Terra (for its rhythm, production and lyrics in all official languages of Spain, specially Galician, but also Catalan or Basque), half a million views in 24 hours for the lyric video and highest debut today on Spotify Spain.

2. Rigoberta Bandini - Ay Mama (second most popular among fans and according to views and charts, a grower, starting with a slow pace and heading to an epic ending, a praise to all mothers: significant lyrics in the bridge of the song are "I don't know why we are so afraid of our boobs as without them there would be no humanity nor beauty")

3. Varry Brava - Raffaella (A tribute to recently deceased Italian diva Raffaella Carrá, it carries her 80s pop-disco style, fun verses and catchy chorus and would suit perfectly in Turin)

Unless something unexpected happens in the live performances, the winner will most likely come out of these three.

My rankings:

1. Mejores (9/10)

2. SloMo (7/10)

3. Calle de la llorería (7/10)

4. Terra (6/10)

5. Postureo (6/10)

6. Raffaella (6/10)

7. Ay Mama (6/10)

8. Quien Lo Diria (5/10)

9. Make You Say (5/10)

10. Culpa (5/10)

11. Secreto de Agua (4/10)

12. Eco (4/10)

13. Voy a Morir (3/10)

14. Sigues En Mi Mente (3/10)

Overall rating: 5.43/10

Top 5 rating: 7/10

Overall the big names have flopped. Ay Mama is far weaker than her best songs sadly :( Culpa is a really low-effort song from Javier Mena which I am quite disappointed. Eco is a bad song composed by Thomas G:son. I'm not feeling Terra sadly. On the other hand, Mejores is heavily underrated and I think this could be a dark horse given the right staging. SloMo is probably the Spanish Raylee so I could see this doing very well in the end. Secreto de Agua has amazing potential but it never reaches a climax, otherwise it could do really well :( In the end, I think Raiven and Tanxgueiras have the best chance of representing Spain and do reasonably well.

My top favourites as per today, but it changes everyday.

1. Rigoberta Bandini - Ay Mama (I don't like any of her previous songs, but this is epic. The lyrics give me the chills everytime)

2. Varry Brava - Raffaella (instantly catchy)

3. Rayden - Calle de la Llorería (I like it more and more every time I listen to it)

4. Tanxugueiras - Terra

5. Javiera Mena - Culpa

6. Chanel - SloMo

7. Luna Ki - Voy A Morir

8. Marta Sangó - Sigues en mi Mente

9. Xeinn - Eco

10. Azucar Moreno - Postureo

Not a fan of any other yet. But these 10 are wonderful, have them all on repeat.

I don't know if this would be any relevant on the day of the festival but interesting to see their popularity so far:

'Ay Mama' has become my current obsession!

It's definitely becoming a hit in Spain. It just entered the top 50 in Spotify today and that's massive and unusual for any previous Eurovision-related songs.

I'm hopeful that's a good sign for it then. Would love to see this progress to Eurovision for Spain!

Ay Mama is my favourite of the selection too. I know Terra seems to be the fan favourite but it doesn’t quite hit the mark as fully as it could for me, which is weird because on paper it sounds the sort of thing I’d usually really rave over.

I don’t share the enthusiasm that a lot of the fandom has that Terra would get Spain out of the bottom five sadly, however I definitely think Ay Mama has Eurovision and commercial hit and viral potential.
