It's ABBA on top with the last track from their first new studio album in 40 years. 40 years ago I was trudging through frozen snow to get the The Visitors on vinyl, but back in the 70's and 80's I didn't allow album tracks into my charts - largely to stop ABBA taking over entirely: I always bought their albums, and always played them to death. Now my chart rules have changed and so ABBA do what they were prevented doing back in the day: They chart every track off the album, plus 2 old album tracks that never charted before, 50% of the top 20, 70% of the top 10 and 5 new entries in the top 10 - a new record for an act with new material, including 4 of the top 5 - only Duran Duran and Tove Lo stop them grabbing a complete top 5, which is bad timing for them as they would otherwise have entered at number one, for a 5th chart-topper in 40 years.

Ode To Freedom is heavily classical-themed, Strauss would have been flattered, and it's fab, giving them a 3rd number one of the year for the first time since 1979, When You Dance With Me would make a great single, but is pipped at the post for now at 2, while the eco-friendly Bumblebee and Xmas song Little Things are just lovely melodies and sentiment, both super-sweet. In at 10, Keep An Eye On Dan is pretty fine The Visitors-era ABBA, with the other two album tracks entering relatively-lowly for the moment as they aren't quite as immediate. Suffice to say, from Arrival onwards they would have done the same with every album track if my chart rules hadn't been so limited. So, it's kind of belated justice for them in these days when certain acts can fart into a microphone and still get an entire album into the US singles charts from curiosity streaming.

As a result, loads of acts drop heavily this week, not least Agnes: but the top spot remains Swedish for a record-breaking 11th week in a row. Kasabian, ed Sheeran and Steps all get big climbs into the 40, and new ones lower down include a Blondie remix aimed at the Xmas market - Rapture topped my charts 40 years ago. Lana Del Ray charts another moody Americana-flavoured track, the new album title track, Bryan Adams makes it 36 years of charting since Run To You, Elton John makes it 2 duets in a row, this time with Charlie Puth. The list of duets he's charted over the years could easily make a list of 20. Erasure return, and 2 60's veterans join together with a latin cover of Procol Harum's Whiter Shade Of Pale - Santana first charted in 1974 for me (as did ABBA) and Steve Winwood in 1982-ish as a solo act, but he would have charted with Traffic in 1967 had I been charting as I loved Hole In My Shoe when I was 9.

Finally, Astro, ex of UB40 and recently touring and recording with Ali Campbell as the original singing half of an alternative UB40 (more or less), passed away far too young, so Rat In Mi iamspamspamami his song and Astro on lead, returns in tribute 34 years on. I saw him on tour with the full band back in the day, before the sad split.

Hey John! A late chart 😮😮😮 I'm finding it harder and harder to have time to comment, do my own chart and have a social life 😂 I'm also starting a new Job in 10 days so my life is just all over the place at the moment!

I'm glad that you're enjoying ABBA's new album. Honestly, it's not awful by Amy means but I do feel quite disappointed at the material after 40 years away and the smashing two singles they released off the bat. I guess this album just isn't for me sadly.

I do quite like Keep An Eye On Dan though so I'm glad to see that one top 10 at least.

Shivers climbing quite fast *.* I've really went off this now which is odd considering how much I loved it at first.

Moth To A Flame getting that we'll deserved climb  I do feel like he needs to take a break. Where is he finding all the time to record his music.

I hope Don't Break The Heart can climb some more here. It's a fantastic song and I'd be quite dissapointed for it to miss the top 50.

I absolutely loved Blue Banisters on release. What a bop!

Did you comment on my chart and say Adele had peaked here or is that my imagination because if so, that is truly a crime.

Fab chart! ^_^

"Little Things" is so wonderful, easily it's my favourite track from "Vojage" with a big gap over the rest songs.

Hey James! :)

Congrats on the new job! That's good news, and I know what you mean about time to do charts and comment and have a social life - mine was really late cos mum was ill last week and I was really stressed and anxious, but happily she's picked up with antibiotics. It doesn't take much to throw off the routine when you have weekly deadlines so don't be afraid to let it take a backseat a week or two when you start the new job - social life is vital, Buzzjack is a great support to that but don't feel guilty about missing a deadline, it's all fine!

Abba album was never going to be peak Abba when they are all over 70, but some of the tracks might grown on you, you never know :D Glad you loved Blue Banisters, very atmospheric single that one. Break The Heart and Adele I still like - evrything in my chart that is available to buy I have bought - I wouldnt spend £1 on downloading something I don't like, but I also tend to like rather a lot so some tracks peak lower than they deserve. That's always a been a problem, a track at 67 (Adele, say) makes it sound like I don't like it much, but I do like it - I just don't love it as much as I love the 66 tracks higher than it

cheers and hope week after next goes fab!

It is lovely isn't it  I hope it becomes a christmas classic!

Hey John!

Nice to see the ABBA domination in your chart, even though I expected the album to be so much better.

I also like the big gains for "Burning Bridges", "Shivers", "Tell It To My Heart" and "Moth To A Flame" and the debut for "Whiter Shade Of Pale".

Great chart!

Hi John,

Hey Sergej! :)

I think maybe my expectations after 40 years were more on the doubtful side, not least because their previous studio album was also quite low-key mood-wise (but classy). So I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least - though I didn't expect anything to be as good as the first two singles :)

Cheers! B-)

Hi Sven! :)

Abba dabba do time, arf! I use a variation of that gag whenever anyone mentions Abu Dabi, ever since a work colleague went for a birthday holiday there and I said she might see Fred Flintstone as it's an Abu Dabi do. And I'll keep repeating it till someone laughs!

Just A Notion would have gone up if not for the Abba invasion, oh the irony.... :D

Hi Jordan! :)

No worries, can't like what you havent heard! Gorillaz is one I didn't chart at the time, yet I liked it so thats a mystery to me! It made the itunes chart following some radio play, so i took that as an excuse to finally buy it!

Yes, the double Heat amused me too :D James Morrison sounds a bit John Newman-ish from 6 or 7 years back, but it's good.

SHM/Weeknd, didn't impress me on one listen but it's a slow burner I think

Cheers! B-)

Hi AH! :)

Yes, our Abba faves a bit different - but not surprised you're not surprised at the Abba invasion  Keep An Eye On Dan is quite touching, a grower!

Your fave UB40 song Rat In Mi NEHCTIK (bloody spam filter!)? I really like it, but it's just a quick pop in tribute to Astro in particular or else Kingston Town, Don't Break My Heart, Food For Thought would be really high in the chart right now (and I just don't have room with ABBA invasion!). I wish the band had all stuck together, and Astro hadn't had to pick sides, it's sad when brothers fall out - hi Oasis!

Thanks for the biiiiiig list

B-)
