1048 02 Dec Take That - Patience 3wks so far...[/b]

These 4 have not had follow ups yet...Take That and Westlife should manage top 5 follow ups in early 2007, and Fedde willprobably remain a one hit wonder...

All of this shows that apart from a few anomalies such as McFly, Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake, many acts who have scored No.1's this year have followed them with a resounding flop...Scisssors, Shakira, Chico, Sandi Thom, Orson and Notorious BIG scoring some of the biggest selling songs of the year and then completely faltering with a follow up...

Perhaps this proves once and for all that no matter how big of a No.1 hit you have, you have to release something just as appealing to score another sizeable hit...you cannot just rely on the old saying 'it will be a top 10 hit off the back of a former No.1's success' because this is evidently not the case...

However those that have pulled off hit follow ups such as Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake and McFly have eith Timbaland as a producer (a blessing?) or a loyal fanbase...

So in the era of downloads the quality of songs matter so much now as the weaker follow ups which would have done better physically are peaking 10-15 places lower at times...a bit of quality control is clearly needed...

Follow up Promiscuous reached No.3

I dont see how that is flop

Considering how crappy Promiscuous is, its a great position

Just how can a follow-up reaching the Top 10 be considered a flop!!
I think you either need to be more specific about what you consider a flop, or just stop being so stupid and thinking a top.10 followup to a number one is a bad thing!

I think he just went through all of the #1 regardless if they were flops or hits...

I think so too. Otherwise he wouldn't have included McFly following up a #1 with a #1.

It's an interesting thread, GD. I wonder what has caused so many flops: or whether there have been more this year than in others.

Yeah, i agree with most of the above, i think if the follow missed the top 20 then i'd consider it a flop.

Notorious BIG, Shakira, Sandi Thom, definetly flops of the year i think id put scissor sisters in there too, as it wasn't anywhere near as huge as most people thought it would be!!

TBH most of those #1s were brand new releases to launch a new album campaign. And most of those artists have had big selling albums this year too - its quite logical that as the album sells more there will be less interest in future single releases (unless you're McFly or $h!tlife).

Gnarls & Sandi Thom for example were just hyped up around that one song - once thats been a big hit the albums hit #1 nobody really gives a toss.

If the song comes from an album with massive album sales and it flops, it's a good reason but if it flops from an album with weak album sales, then it's probally just the song
I agree with other people - some of the songs arent really flops. I mean, how can Nelly Furtado's promiscious be regarded as a flop when it reached no3 and is in the top40 singles of the year? Also, Madonna Get Together is hardly a flop. Ok, it didnt sell great but its still a minor hit. Chico & Sandi Thom are flops.

Sorry...I didn't mean that all of these were flops...Justin and Nelly are exceptions...I just listed all of the No.1's for arguments sake or it would look like a biased argument

A top 10 follow up to a No.1 is good but despite Smiley Faces reaching No.10 I would hardly call it a huge success following a No.1 song which sold over 3 quarters of a million copies...

I wouldn't call them all flops really. Maneater reaching than Promiscious reaching no 3.

It couldn't really have been expected to match Crazy's success. That was number one for 9 weeks and is the biggest selling single of the year so far. Smiley Faces had a decent chart run as well. I don't think it did badly considering most people said they would be one hit wonders.

You can only judge them on the first single from their next album really. Singles from albums that are already out cannot be compared to the initial release.

LOL!!!!!!!!

I'd hardly call Arctic Monkeys, Madonna or Nelly Furtado flops... ridiculous.
