September 26, 20222 yr Watched nothing of the game, but seems once the shackles came off England came alive. Why does Southgate insist to play Pickford and then play Pope ahead of Ramsdale!? He is too loyal to his core group of players. Our problem is our defence is pretty average, but our attack is quite good. Think we will struggle at the World Cup though.

This is a common comment, but each three keeper played 2/6 Nations League games. Ramsdale played in 0-4 against Hungary, he hardly covered himself in glory either and it's surely right to give both keepers a chance to show they should be second choice.
September 27, 20222 yr Southgate has always been rightly loyal to players who have been in poor form or not playing for their clubs as long as their England form remains, but once players have lost that then he's dropped them from the squad - Dier, Rashford, Sancho, Mings - so it will be interesting to see what he does with Maguire now. I had seen him a bit like Pickford, who Southgate was consistently slagged off for picking despite him never really playing badly for England, and his now pretty much undisputed no. 1, but really difficult to keep justifying Maguire picks if he's no longer playing well for England too.

I get that, but think the knives are out for Southgate now. A poor/underwhemling World Cup and I think he is gone. Inevitable now that the likes of Maddison and Trent won't be going to the World Cup. I think he stays loyal to Maguire as our CBs are out of sorts really. Think he goes to the World Cup regardless at this stage - I think his squad is pretty much nailed injuries aside.
September 28, 20222 yr Yeah a poor world cup will certainly see him shown the door which is sad but you have to look at whether someone else could do better with this squad. Still could be some injuries to give hope to Maddison and Trent. The thing I was most frustrated with Southgate was him not giving Toney any minutes whatsoever, what if Kane gets injured? I definitely don't like the idea of playing Sterling as a false 9...
