January 7, 20224 yr Author  Missed the top 40 this week? Alesso and Katy Perry When I'm Gone Non-album single Released: 29th December 2021 Label: Capitol Records Video -ZFfIoBbOfg Biography Alesso When the world of EDM was supersizing in the 2010s, Alesso went deeper, not bigger. Turning his attention from floor-filling grooves to soul-stirring hooks, he’d become one of the chief architects of dance music’s pop takeover. Born Alessandro Renato Rodolfo Lindblad in 1991, the Stockholm native caught the ear of Swedish House Mafia’s Sebastian Ingrosso with his self-titled debut EP in 2010. He quickly notched a hit alongside his mentor with 2011’s “Calling (Lose My Mind),” pairing a soaring topline from OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder with electrifying progressive house. It was an early example of pop/EDM crossover, and while such fusions soon became common, no one else had Alesso’s finesse. After perfecting the mixture of indie guitars with neon synths on 2015’s epic “Heroes (We Could Be),” featuring Tove Lo, he would go on to team up with Maroon 5, Florida Georgia Line, and even Taiwan’s Jolin Tsai, always testing the limits of his sound. But Alesso never turned his back on dance music. In 2019 he opted for hypnotic club fare on the PROGRESSO VOLUME 1 mixtape, and on 2021’s Armin van Buuren collab “Leave a Little Love,” he paired ’80s electro-funk with heads-down deep house. In fact, Alesso tells Apple Music, the first time he heard house music, it was love at first listen. “It was so different from everything you heard on the radio,” he says. “My gut was telling me, one day this is going to take off.” Sure enough, it did—and Alesso keeps taking it higher. - Apple Music Katy Perry She’s the dream girl. The free spirit. The candy-coated pin-up and the well of inner strength. She’s a little Disney, a little Betty Boop. But she’s also an avatar for the modern female pop star in a post-Madonna world—the liberated woman who kicks open doors without knocking. Under all the sparkle and glitter, you could sense an artist grappling with messy human contradictions—about sexuality, about self-love, about asserting femininity in a man’s world. Talking to Apple Music in 2019, Katy Perry said she leads with her gut and lets her mind follow, and doesn’t make much sense of any of it until the work is done. “The themes are joy,” she said. “They are empowerment. They are trying to expand the boundaries of what I think, and trying to learn from all this opportunity.” She might actually be a superhero. But she also might just be what she is: a girl from Southern California who worked like crazy and didn’t flinch. Born in 1984 to Pentecostal pastors in Santa Barbara, Perry (originally Katy Hudson) grew up on gospel music, putting out her first album, 2001’s Katy Hudson, on a Christian label. At some point during adolescence, she discovered Queen, a band whose mix of flamboyance, power and sexualised wit cracked her creative world open. (Perry named her fragrance Killer Queen, after one of the band’s signature songs.) Club tracks, ballads, classic pop-rock and contemporary electronic music—Perry’s production collaborators are brilliant (Dr. Luke, Max Martin, benny blanco), but it's her songwriting, her image, her balance of playfulness and confidence that pull the package together. And for every “Teenage Dream” or “I Kissed a Girl”, there's a “Firework” or a “Roar”, music that turns expressions of vulnerability into anthems of inclusion and self-renewal—a dynamic that has made Perry an inspirational figure not only to young women, but for an LGBTQ community she vocally supports. Perry doesn’t quite know how she went so platinum—2010’s Teenage Dream reached commercial heights previously set only by Michael Jackson—but while the numbers are nice, the work is what's important. “It’s up to me to make the right choice in my mind to keep putting one foot in front of the other and going forward,” Perry told Apple Music. “Not going backwards—I could easily go backwards by literally looking at a photo. But I have to go forward, because I know what’s good for me now.” - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History Alesso 2012 19 Calling (Lose My Mind) (Sebastian Ingrosso & Alesso feat. Jersey suburbs, orthodox Muslim household, parents working their way through corporate America, wanted to fit in, couldn’t. She got bullied for wearing a hijab after 9/11 and became the kind of teenager who, on at least one occasion, drew the cops into a chase while joyriding in the family car. “[My parents] were only strict because they were reasonable,” she told Apple Music in 2017. “Like, they’re black, they come from the South and Midwest, they don’t come from anything…they’re not tryna take a gang of risks.” That Rowe had her own ideas about how to live didn’t help. “I rebelled really hard, and I learned everything the hard way,” she said. “I’m very hardheaded, very curious.” It’s a balance—rebellious but insecure, expressive but self-conscious, dreamy but alert—that has made Rowe resonant, but also an anomaly, the kind of artist who doesn’t ignore her quirks or contradictions, but brings them to the table in all their messy human glory. After self-releasing a couple of EPs in her early twenties (she took her name from the Nation of Islam’s Supreme Alphabet—Savior Zig-Zag Allah), she became the first female artist signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, joining future collaborators Kendrick Lamar and Jay Rock. Released in 2017, her debut album, Ctrl, put her at the vanguard of contemporary R&B, mixing the expressivity of classic soul with a hazy, synth-heavy atmosphere and a playful sense of lyricism that brought Rowe’s inner monologue out. “Even with the heels and tighter clothes and other things, I’m still just me,” she said. “I still have a lot of anxiety about the world, and my thoughts, and what people think about my thoughts.” " - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2016 88 Consideration (Rihanna feat. Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face,” “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex, and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Like the work of collaborator Lana Del Rey or early booster (and fellow Toronto native) Drake, Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy, and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character. It’s like Scarface, the villain: It’s horrible, but you can’t stop looking at it.” - Apple Music Top 100 Chart History 2012 37 Crew Love (Drake feat.
