Posted January 8, 20223 yr First time doing my archived single charts since I briefly stopped, due to work and exam reasons. Now, I have all the time in the world to continue where I've started. Here is the first of many charts in 1981: At the first chart of the year 1981, John Lennon starts the year where he ended last year, at the top with "Just Like (Starting Over)", marking it four weeks at #1. But the challenge for the late legend comes from a cover by Peter Maffay called "Über Sieben Brücken Mußt Du Gehn" at #2, originally done by East Berlin band Karat in the year 1979. Meanwhile Leo Sayer reaches the top 3 again with "More Than I Can Say" at #3, Neil Diamond climbing high to #4 with "Love On The Rocks", his first top 10 hit since "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", his duet with Barbra Streisand 2 years ago and australian soft-rock band Air Supply reach the top 10 for the third time in a row with "Every Woman In The World". 1bEuIWVn9-c Sergej's Personal Chart from the 2nd January 1981: 1 (1) John Lennon - Just Like (Starting Over) 2 (NE) Peter Maffay - Über Sieben Brücken Mußt Du Gehn 3 (10) Leo Sayer - More Than I Can Say 4 (24) Neil Diamond - Love On The Rocks 5 (2) Barbra Streisand - Woman In Love 6 (6) Frank Duval & Orchestra - Angel Of Mine 7 (7) Kenny Rogers - Lady 8 (8) Bruce Springsteen - Hungry Heart 9 (4) Roland Kaiser - Santa Maria 10 (NE) Air Supply - Every Woman In The World 11 (11) Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot 12 (3) ABBA - Super Trouper 13 (13) John Lennon - Imagine 14 (NE) Barbra Streisand & Barry Gibb - Guilty 15 (15) Blondie - The Tide Is High 16 (17) Robert Palmer - Johnny And Mary 17 (NE) Boney M. - Felicidad (Margherita) 18 (23) Barclay James Harvest - Life Is For Living 19 (5) Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry 20 (16) Rod Stewart - Passion 21 (NE) Heart - Tell It Like It Is 22 (25) The Boomtown Rats - Banana Republic 23 (9) The Police - De Do Do Do De Da Da Da 24 (12) Status Quo - What You're Proposing 25 (NE) Karat - Über Sieben Brücken Mußt Du Gehn 26 (21) Kool & The Gang - Celebration 27 (18) Stevie Wonder - Master Blaster (Jammin') 28 (22) The Korgis - Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime 29 (19) Queen - Another One Bites The Dust 30 (NE) Diana Ross - It's My Turn 31 (NE) Andy Gibb - Time Is Time 32 (27) Eddie Rabbitt - I Love A Rainy Night 33 (NE) Barry Manilow - I Made It Through The Rain 34 (32) Garland Jeffreys - Matador 35 (NE) Olivia Newton-John & Cliff Richard - Suddenly 36 (30) Boney M. - Children Of Paradise 37 (NE) Don Williams - I Believe In You 38 (29) Daryl Hall and John Oates - You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling 39 (NE) AC/DC - Hells Bells 40 (NE) The Doobie Brothers - One Step Closer Edited January 8, 20223 yr by Sergej
January 9, 20223 yr Good to see John on top still, and great new entries from Guilty and Suddenly. I don't know the Boney M xmas song! Or Peter Maffay, AC/DC, and Karat, but I like the rest of the newies :)Â Hungry Heart and Johnny & Mary outdoing their UK peaks is great to see, and I hope the exams stuff all went well!

Or Peter Maffay, AC/DC, and Karat, but I like the rest of the newies :)Â Hungry Heart and Johnny & Mary outdoing their UK peaks is great to see, and I hope the exams stuff all went well! Glad that you like these songs in my first chart of 1981. "Hungry Heart" and "Johnny and Mary" are very memorable songs for me, definitely deserving of a top 10 spot. I've been finished with the exams last year, they went not as good as I hoped it would be, but I passed regardless and I finally got a job. Thank you for your comment!
January 9, 20223 yr Author "Suddenly" was # 1 in my chart. I'm glad that "Suddenly" was a #1 in your chart, it's a nice duet.

January 17, 20223 yr Hi Sergej! Good to hear you got a job and the exams helped, even if they weren't quite what you hoped. Well done! Good to see Flash and Hey Nineteen enter, both great singles, Blondie & Barb top 10, Eddie Rabbit wasn't a UK hit sadly, and neither was Dan Fogelberg, but REO Speedwagon very much was a big UK hit and chart-topper for me, be interesting to see if it improves on number 40 :)  Never heard your number one before but thanks for the German lesson, I pronounced it right from reading it (it turns out) and I now know Over Seven Bridges You Must Go in German. TBH only Brucken and gehn stumped me.... :D

Thank you for your comment on my throwback chart.

January 24, 20223 yr Hi Sergej! :)  Abba up to 2 :yahoo: I was also a fan of Rod's Passion, which underperformed in the charts of the time, and Life Is For Living I liked. I love the Stevie Wonder country-styled hit, and Dire Straits sweet Romeo & Juliet, and I dont know that Eagles record. I don't recall it as a single release even!! :o  Imagine at 3, Kool celebrating top 10 as they did in my charts, Styx creeping in, I also liked that one, though not quite up to Babe standard. Don McLean a very late entrant to the 40 :o One of Cliff's good singles entering, this is his greatest period for me, and The Jacksons prepare for a classic follow-up, I enjoyed Heartbreak Hotel though. I dont know Killin' Time but I can support anyone that uses their surname Knoblock as a popstar name :D  enjoying these :)

"Killin' Time" won't be long in my chart, I know that song because I always the hear the American Top 40 80s shows from 1981. Thank you for your comment! Edited January 29, 20223 yr by Sergej

The highest debut this week is at #31 with "Woman" by the late, great John Lennon.  wJzNZ1c5C9c Sergej's Personal Chart from the 27th February 1981: 1 (8) REO Speedwagon - Keep On Loving You 2 (4) Barclay James Harvest - Life Is For Living 3 (1) Eddie Rabbitt - I Love A Rainy Night 4 (3) Frank Duval & Orchestra - Angel Of Mine 5 (2) Dolly Parton - 9 To 5 6 (10) The Boomtown Rats - Banana Republic 7 (6) Kool & The Gang - Celebration 8 (7) ABBA - Super Trouper 9 (9) Styx - The Best Of Times 10 (14) John Lennon - (Just Like) Starting Over 11 (13) Dan Fogelberg - Samd Old Lang Syne 12 (11) Delbert McClinton - Giving It Up For Your Love 13 (19) Boney M. - Felicidad (Margherita) 14 (16) Peter Maffay - Über Sieben Brücken Mußt Du Gehn (Over Seven Bridges You Must Go) 15 (13) Rainbow - I Surrender 16 (20) Queen - Flash 17 (22) Don McLean - Crying 18 (18) Rod Stewart - Passion 19 (25) Neil Diamond - Hello Again 20 (23) Stevie Wonder - I Ain't Gonna Stand For It 21 (21) John Lennon - Imagine 22 (27) Blondie - Rapture 23 (15) Steely Dan - Hey Nineteen 24 (26) Robert Palmer - Johnny And Mary 25 (17) Dire Straits - Romeo And Juliet 26 (29) Secret Service - Ye-si-ca 27 (28) Tierra - Together 28 (31) Cliff Richard - A Little In Love 29 (32) Pat Benatar - Treat Me Right 30 (36) Barbra Streisand & Barry Gibb - What Kind Of Fool 31 (NE) John Lennon - Woman 32 (34) The Alan Parsons Project - Games People Play 33 (37) Randy Meisner - Hearts On Fire 34 (39) Daryl Hall & John Oates - Kiss On My List 35 (NE) Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime 36 (35) Ronnie Milsap - Smoky Mountain Rain 37 (NE) Leo Sayer - Living In A Fantasy 38 (NE) Bruce Springsteen - Fade Away 39 (24) Air Supply - Every Woman In The World 40 (NE) Donnie Iris - Ah!Leah!
April 20, 20223 yr Banana Republic was a goodie, I love rapture and I Aint Gonna Stand For It is good too.  REO Speedwagon also topped my charts in early 1981, snap! It's still a great Rock anthem. John Lennon's Woman also topped my charts, Talking Heads is a total classic. I also love hall & Oates Kiss. The rest fall into 2 groups of new entries, those I like and those I dont really know or have forgotten! Shockinlgy that group includes stuff from Barbra Streisand, Bruce, Leo, so if I ever get to revisit 1981 musically I will need to dig those ones out to re-evaluate the way I have done for 1967 to 1971, and currently am doing for 1972! :D  Interesting stuff! :cheer:
