First time doing my archived single charts since I briefly stopped, due to work and exam reasons.

Now, I have all the time in the world to continue where I've started.

Here is the first of many charts in 1981:

At the first chart of the year 1981, John Lennon starts the year where he ended last year, at the top with "Just Like (Starting Over)", marking it four weeks at #1. But the challenge for the late legend comes from a cover by Peter Maffay called "Über Sieben Brücken Mußt Du Gehn" at #2, originally done by East Berlin band Karat in the year 1979. Meanwhile Leo Sayer reaches the top 3 again with "More Than I Can Say" at #3, Neil Diamond climbing high to #4 with "Love On The Rocks", his first top 10 hit since "You Don't Bring Me Flowers", his duet with Barbra Streisand 2 years ago and australian soft-rock band Air Supply reach the top 10 for the third time in a row with "Every Woman In The World".

Good to see John on top still, and great new entries from Guilty and Suddenly. I don't know the Boney M xmas song! Or Peter Maffay, AC/DC, and Karat, but I like the rest of the newies :)

Hungry Heart and Johnny & Mary outdoing their UK peaks is great to see, and I hope the exams stuff all went well!

Glad that you like these songs in my first chart of 1981.

"Hungry Heart" and "Johnny and Mary" are very memorable songs for me, definitely deserving of a top 10 spot.

I've been finished with the exams last year, they went not as good as I hoped it would be, but I passed regardless and I finally got a job.

Thank you for your comment!

"Suddenly" was # 1 in my chart.

I'm glad that "Suddenly" was a #1 in your chart, it's a nice duet.

Hi Sergej! Good to hear you got a job and the exams helped, even if they weren't quite what you hoped. Well done!

Good to see Flash and Hey Nineteen enter, both great singles, Blondie & Barb top 10, Eddie Rabbit wasn't a UK hit sadly, and neither was Dan Fogelberg, but REO Speedwagon very much was a big UK hit and chart-topper for me, be interesting to see if it improves on number 40 :)

Never heard your number one before but thanks for the German lesson, I pronounced it right from reading it (it turns out) and I now know Over Seven Bridges You Must Go in German. TBH only Brucken and gehn stumped me.... :D

Hi John!

Thank you for your congratulations.

I'm also happy that you like the debuts for "Flash" and "Hey Nineteen".

Also, your german translation was right, it's Over Seven Bridges You Must Go in German. Both versions of the song by Peter Maffay and Karat are classics in Germany.

Thank you for your comment on my throwback chart.

It's 3 weeks on top for Peter Maffay, with ABBA & John Lennon following suit at #2 and #3 closely behind. With Blondie and Frank Duval & Orchestra completing the top 5, the Top 5 is all shook up, except for the #1 position, even though Peter is safe right now, he might not be safe from losing the top position next week. Kool & The Gang celebrate their top 10 jump with "Celebration", as well as Barclay James Harvest with "Life Is For Living", Eddie Rabbitt reaching the top 10 for the first time with "I Love A Rainy Night" and Boney M. add "Felicidad (Margherita)" to their top 10 collection.

Speaking of high jumps, Dolly Parton manages to almost reach the top 10 with "9 To 5", if her momentum keeps up like this, she will reach the top 10 next week. Dire Straits also jump high, almost reaching the top 25 with "Romeo and Juliet".

The highest debut this week come from Styx after almost reaching #1 with "Boat On The River", they try their luck again, with "The Best Of Times" at #29, other debuts come from the legendary Jacksons with "Heartbreak Hotel", not to be confused with Elvis's classic "Heartbreak Hotel", Cliff Richard debuts with "A Little In Love", Country singer Fred Knoblock and american actor Susan Anton jump in with "Killin' Time" and Don McLean debuts with the classic "Crying" at #40.

Hi Sergej! :)

Abba up to 2 :yahoo: I was also a fan of Rod's Passion, which underperformed in the charts of the time, and Life Is For Living I liked. I love the Stevie Wonder country-styled hit, and Dire Straits sweet Romeo & Juliet, and I dont know that Eagles record. I don't recall it as a single release even!! :o

Imagine at 3, Kool celebrating top 10 as they did in my charts, Styx creeping in, I also liked that one, though not quite up to Babe standard. Don McLean a very late entrant to the 40 :o One of Cliff's good singles entering, this is his greatest period for me, and The Jacksons prepare for a classic follow-up, I enjoyed Heartbreak Hotel though. I dont know Killin' Time but I can support anyone that uses their surname Knoblock as a popstar name :D

enjoying these :)

Hi John!

Very happy that you like most of the songs on here!

For me, my favourite Styx song is "Boat On The River", really like the folk-y sound of it. "Killin' Time" won't be long in my chart, I know that song because I always the hear the American Top 40 80s shows from 1981.

Thank you for your comment!

It's a brand new number one song after Dolly Parton's 9 To 5 slipped down to #2 and it's also the first #1 for the country artist Eddie Rabbitt with his song "I Love A Rainy Night", but he also debuts lower down with "Drivin' My Life Away" at #38. Meanwhile Frank Duval & Orchestra really try to get to #1 with "Angel Of Mine" as they rise to #3, but Barclay James Harvest rise to #4 with "Life Is For Living" to challenge for the top spot as well.

Also two other songs rise up to the top 10, Styx's "The Best Of Times" to #9 and The Boomtown Rats with the underrated "Banana Republic" at #10.

The highest debut this week comes from Blondie, who look to follow up her top 10 hit "The Tide Is High" with "Rapture" at #27.

For a climb of 7 places REO Speedwagon gets their first chart topping hit with "Keep On Loving You", it keeps "Live Is For Living" by Barclay James Harvest out of the top spot, they have to settle for #2. Meanwhile rising to #6 are The Boomtown Rats with "Banana Republic". The highest debut this week is at #31 with "Woman" by the late, great John Lennon.

Banana Republic was a goodie, I love rapture and I Aint Gonna Stand For It is good too.

REO Speedwagon also topped my charts in early 1981, snap! It's still a great Rock anthem. John Lennon's Woman also topped my charts, Talking Heads is a total classic. I also love hall & Oates Kiss.

The rest fall into 2 groups of new entries, those I like and those I dont really know or have forgotten! Shockinlgy that group includes stuff from Barbra Streisand, Bruce, Leo, so if I ever get to revisit 1981 musically I will need to dig those ones out to re-evaluate the way I have done for 1967 to 1971, and currently am doing for 1972! :D

Interesting stuff! :cheer:

Hi there John!

Glad that you like most of the songs on here!

Would be interested to see your revisited 1981 charts! If possible when I'll catch up with my chart archives, I might revisit all the years as well!

Thank you for your comment.
