#4 - Scared Of The Dark

 

 

Falling agonisingly short of a podium finish and in 4th place is the comeback single that reignited the flame, 'Scared Of The Dark'. Released in March 2017 Scared Of The Dark returned Steps to the pop stratosphere with an almighty bang and I'm sure I'm not the only one who didn't realise how much they needed new Steps music in their life until this was released. Their best song since reforming and absolutely one of their best songs all round.

Scared of the dark, another excellent choice and an excellent single and it was exactly what was needed for the comeback, i think they nailed it really, modern steps yet full of what we originally loved from them, it going top 40 was a great moment that i would love if they could someday miraculously do again.

Later on in the day #3 will be revealed and it's a single that peaked at #2.

 

Following that in about 24 hours I'll conclude the countdown with #2 and #1 following in consecutive posts.

Another great track in your countdown! What a comeback :heart: Who would have thought that we would get another 3 albums after the initial split. I was over the moon hearing this song for the first time. Such a glorious moment!

#3 – It’s The Way You Makes Me Feel

 

 

In at #3 is It’s The Way You Make Me Feel. Released in January 2001, it would go on to peak at #2 in the UK singles chart after debuting at #72. Similar to Say You’ll Be Mine this song features vocals from all five members of Steps and is this is my favourite song taken from their third album Buzz. It’s a song that sounds very of its time and certainly wouldn’t be out of place on a Britney Spears album from around that time either. I know they were pretty much irrelevant in Australia at this point, but I can’t help but think this might’ve been a bit of a surprise hit for them here.

#2 – Deeper Shade Of Blue

 

 

Deeper Shade Of Blue was one of my least favourite songs when I first got Steptacular, I’m not really sure why when I look back on it now as it’s an absolutely fantastic song. Another one of their single releases that was skipped over here in Australia (their second after Better Best Forgotten), I’m not sure why though as I think this would’ve done better than both Loves Got A Hold On My Heart and After The Love Has Gone here in Australia. I wasn’t a fan on the music video back in the day and that hasn’t really changed now either. However, I do love the solo acoustic version Claire released in 2015, it had me seriously wanting her to released an album of similarly styled previous Steps singles.

#1 – One For Sorrow

 

 

I’m sure most of you would’ve figured out by now what the #1 song on my list is. One For Sorrow, released as the third single from Step One in August 1998 it would go on to peak at #2 in the UK and #34 in Australia. This was when I started to feel that maybe the majority of the record buying public in Australia wasn’t as into Steps as I was. This took a little bit of time to grown on me as I wasn’t so keen on the Claire heavy vocal at the time, but I think by the end of 1999 I’d started to really like this and by the early 2000’s it was one of my favourites. On a side note am I one of the few people here that enjoy the remix version of this?

ITWYMMF :heart: a true Steps classic! Great video as well, if only for Lisa with her iconic blue braces. Could’ve been a nice hit outside the UK.

 

DSOB, my favorite of all time! Great to see it here at #2. A more ‘grown’ sound that really suits them well.

 

And OFS, another classic! It’s the song that made me an official fan :heart:
