#9 - Something In Your Eyes

In at #9 is the joyous and fabulous Something In Your Eyes. Released as the second singles from the 2020 album What The Future Holds, 'Something In Your Eyes' is exactually what you'd expected a Steps song to sound like in 2020 if you were told in 2000 that'd be releasing new music 20 years on. This is in my top handful of Steps songs released since they reformed and it's easy to see why. With a chorus that's easy to sing along to it can get stuck in your head for days, it's just one of those songs you can put on and it instantly lifts your mood.

It was a great single and was what you would expect from steps in the 20s I do prefer what the future holds myself but was a great choice of 2nd single.
Something In Your Eyes is nothing short of iconic!

#8 - Chain Reaction

In at #8 we have Steps last Top 50 hit in Australia, Chain Reaction (#41). I'd heard the original of this growing up but never thought to much of it. It wasn't until 2001 when Steps covered it that I began to really like this song. I like the original now but feel the Steps version gives it that little bit more punch. The video for this is also one of my favourites of theirs. Not a whole heap more to say on this sorry. Funnily enough though this was released in Australia in January 2002, one month after the band went their separate ways.

Steps version does have an extra punch that the original doesn’t.

Although you can say the same for a couple of their covers!

True, there may be another cover coming later on that you can say the same about.

Well as most people don’t like Better The Devil… I’m going for Tragedy!

You may be right. ;) (I hope that's the correct emoji)

Speaking of the next song in the countdown, #7 will be up in a few hours and it's a single with blue outfits in the music video...

#7 - Better Best Forgotten

Top 7 time and this is where it started to get difficult to rank and to be perfectly honest all seven of these songs can easily be #1 on any given day as I think they're all stunning, but this is the order I've landed on for my countdown. Better Best Forgotten was released as a single in the UK in March 1999 and debuted at #2 in the charts. I remember this being the first time I felt the disappointment of a Steps single not getting released in Australia, and it wasn't to be the last either. I can still remember sitting at home on a Saturday night with the channel on MTV and the video tape in the VCR ready and waiting for the video to be introduced by Cat Deeley on Hitlist UK, back then that was just before we got the internet at home so it was the only way I could get to see the video. The song itself was one of my favourites from Step One so I was so happy when I found out it was going to be a single. I also remember going into the big HMV in the city and finding an import of this single section of the store, luckily my parents for it for me for Christmas 1999. :)

I'm a huge better best forgotten song, I did so well as a 5th single considering how big the album was.

True, I mean I don’t remember how much this was done back then but they didn’t release a remixed version or anything like that from memory. It was just the standard album version. That makes it even more impressive.

It propelled them into the huge league at the time. It climbing to number at the time was a big surprise but a great one.

Oh, some great songs PL

SIYE was an instant Steps classic! Maybe not a chart succes but definitely a succes among the fans. Very instant and still love it until this day.

CR is also a song that could’ve been a bigger hit outside the UK. Surprised it actually managed top 50 in Australia! Was less of a fan a few months ago but now back to loving it!

BBF, crappy video but what a great campy song it is!
