Heather Small has announced her first album in 16 years, ‘Colour My Life’.

The Voice of M People is back with the new single, 'Love Me or Not', taken from her first studio effort in more than a decade, named after the 90s dance band's second single from their 1991 debut LP 'Northern Soul'.

For the upcoming collection, released on July 29, the 57-year-old singer-songwriter teamed up with studio wizard Rupert Christie and the London Metropolitan Orchestra to reimagine all of her Top 10 hits from her tenure with M People and Heather's successful solo career.

Fans can expect orchestral versions of the hits; 'Moving on Up', 'How Can I Love You More', 'Search For The Hero', 'One Night in Heaven', 'Don’t Look Any Further', and the title track.

The collection will also include a brand new cover of Paul Weller’s ‘You Do Something To Me’, ‘Love Me or Not’, and ‘Don’t Look Any Further’, a duet with tenor Alfie Boe.

I think this is quite a strong lead single, hope Radio 2 pick it up.

It's not dreadful, but I really can't see a Heather Small album (even a pseudo-best of) doing any business.

Which would be a shame. I've long thought it a little odd that M People have remained so forgotten, when Jess Glynne has managed to score so many #1s in recent years by rinsing-and-repeating the M People formula.

And on paper they're the absolute ideal fit for the orchestral dance trend.

But if the anaemic Moving On Up update is anything to go by (now on Spotify), I think this will be a sad disappointment.

M PEOPLE TOP TEN

01. Search For The Hero

02. Colour My Life

03. One Night In Heaven

04. How Can I Love You More?

05. Renaissance ("I'm coming home, I'm coming home.... TO YOUR HOUSE" - wonderful NONSENSE)

06. Just For You

07. Open Your Heart

08. Moving On Up

09. Don't Look Any Further

10. Heather's shriek-off with Tom Jones at the end of "Perfect Day"

11. The ridiculous ad-libs in "You Need Love Like I Do" with HIM AGAIN Sir Tom - "I'm a girl and you're a guy"... "YES it's TRUE!"

Itchycoo Park and Angel St need a mention there :o
M People were one of the absolute best dance bands of the 90s. So many tunes. Agree that 'Itchycoo Park' needs a place in that top ten, it's glorious. Also 'Sight For Sore Eyes'. This album sounds interesting.

Sight For Sore Eyes and Itchycoo Park are fun enough, but there is nothing in that top (11) I would honestly replace them with.

Angel St was dreadfully lazy and cynical. They just took the melody of Search For The Hero and set it to the backing track of Moving On Up.

hahaha never realised they had that "coming home... to your house" lyrics

that really pushes them to worst dance band ever in the history of music :D

Thought I’d give this a listen out of general curiosity and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised - it’s actually quite a decent little bop ^_^

What do people think of the album? I like it but one of the weakest tracks is one night in heaven. The original is probably my favourite song of theirs but the new version just doesn’t suit the song.

The album as a whole is pretty flat for me, 'Love Me Or Not' is the main highlight really. The original versions of the rest are so much better than what's on this.

I like some of the new versions. My favourites are as follows; Moving on up is really good. Sight for sore eyes is great too. Love me or not is fantastic. One thing I would say is the album could have been longer at only 11 tracks.
