X Factor winner Leona debuts at the top of the Singles Chart this week with ‘A Moment Like This’ to claim the coveted Christmas Number One spot – quite an achievement, given the CD has only been on the shelves for 2 days and the download has only been available for 5 days. Leona debuts 2 places higher than last year’s winner Shayne Ward, who sold more singles than Leona in the first 2 days but faced stronger competition from Mario Rosenstock and Nizlopi at the top of last year’s Christmas Chart. Akon and Eminem’s ‘Smack That’ drops one place to No2 after four weeks on top, still ahead of Take That who drop to No3 with ‘Patience’. Girls Aloud have the next new entry at No11 with their version of Tiffany’s 1988 chart-topper ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’, their 14th Irish Top 20 single in just four years. This week’s Album Chart also sees an ‘X Factor’ effect, with both Westlife and Take That benefiting from their performances on Saturday’s Final: Westlife have the highest-selling Christmas No1 since The Beatles ‘1’ six years ago and extend their run at the top of the chart to five weeks, while Take That leap 7 places from No12 to No5 with ‘Beautiful World’. Il Divo climb from No4 to No2 with ‘Siempre’, matching the No2 peak of their self-titled first album in 2004 and surpassing the No3 peak of their second album ‘Ancora’ this time last year. This is what I was told Comments: I was wondering if it is possible to find out any of the following: what sales levels are required for the various certifications for singles and albums - platinum, silver etc; Certifications in Ireland are as follows: Albums: Gold: 7,500 units sold Platinum: 15,000 units sold Singles: Silver: 7,500 units sold Gold: 10,000 units sold Platinum: 15,000 units sold typical weekly sales amounts for a number 1 single/album, a Top 10 single/album, Top 30 single/album. There are no average single sales as it depends on the release of new repertoire, but on a slow week 500 sales could make the Top 20.
