This has the best music video of 2022 by a country mile. I'm a little bit in awe of the animation that shows a massive carousel with CGI Pharrel, 21 and Tyler completing different actions as the toy spins. The video is a work of art in itself and I'd urge anyone to even remotely interested in animation to give it a watch. I did see someone in the YouTube comments ask if they really built it which is worrying but just goes to show how good the CGI is. Pharrell's bouncy, looped production is his best for ages and I'm glad that he decided not to provide any vocals because 21 and Tyler body the track. This helped Tyler gain, what is unreliably, his first #1 on my charts and 21 Savage his 5th.

N95 was the first single from the long-awaited 5th studio album from Kendrick Lamar and it took a couple of weeks but eventually grew into a massive favourite from the album for me. The flows are relentless and I remember it sounding epic during his headline Glastonbury performance so it was one I was really pumped to hear live on tour and it didn't disappoint. The beat here is crazy and Kendrick just doesn't let up providing us with luxurious bars and grandiose flows. There's still has one more entry to come for K-Dot.

Great to see all the Taylor tracks showing up - Midnight Rain doesn't do much for me tbh but I love Lavender Haze and Anti-Hero. Don't Break My Heart is one of the Dawn FM tracks I usually forget about (sorry!) but it always sounds great when I listen to the whole album. And I agree with what you said about Hot In It, Charli really makes the track and it plays really well into the Crash era aesthetic!

Loving all the Taylor love on here

I think most people tend to agree with you that 'Don't Break My Heart' isn't a highlight but it's the one that stuck with me the most.

Thank you :D

Dave bagged himself a #1 single earlier last year with 'Starlight'. This is Dave at his most laidback, there's not much in terms of social commentary or hard-hitting storytelling, just crooning for a girl over a sample of 'Fly My To The Moon'. Dave produced this track by himself that just goes to show what an all-round wonderfully talented artist he is. This did feel like a surprisingl release of his to end up being a massive #1 hit but I'm certainly not complaining. He had the audacity to release this a week after I saw him in concert so unfortunately this wasn't part of his tracklist for that show.

Charli started the year off right, bagging her first Top 40 hit as a lead artist since 2018 and helping gain Rina her first ever. This track knows what it is, interpolating September's 'Cry For You' and combining it with a sample of Milk Inc's "Cry For Me" (which I didn't release) to create something much better than it's parts suggest. The garage influences are obvious, which gives it another section of nostalgia, but Charli and Rina provide enough to make it sound fresh. Another one where I prefer the video deemed the 'official visualiser' to the one chosen as the official video. The simpler video just feels more in tune with the basic vibes of the song.

2022 85 Yeah Yeah Yeah

My 2nd most played track of 2022 falls at #12. The playcount is obviously inflated by being Blackpink's first release for a couple of years and then got further boosts by it's inclusion of my most played album of the year and the tour boost where I listening to practically the group's whole discography everyday. I love this but I can see why it was used a throwaway track for a video game. It does feel a bit derivative of a lot of their older stuff, you can hear 'Forever Young', 'Kill This Love' and 'Playing With Fire'. This is a pretty generic dance-pop tune that sounds like it should have been released 5 years ago but I still love the sound so I'm all here for it. The animators of the video were caught slipping when they created the Jisoo model though, the Rosé, Jennie and Lisa characters all look perfect but there's something about the Jisoo one that looks a little off.

Landing in the most unlucky position this year and just missing out on a top 10 placement is 'Hasta Los Dientes'. There is some good news for the track though; it is the highest placed song of 2022 that missed #1 on my charts. I said earlier that my favourite moments on 'Familia' was when Camila embraced her Latin roots and it's her Spanish language track with Argentinian artist Maria Becerra that has given Camila her biggest hit from the album. This was my introduction to Maria and I fell in love a little bit. She absolutely kills both the track and the video and it left me so excited to hear more from here. Unfortunately, her solo music is a slightly different vibe and didn't live up to what she did here for me. I don't have any idea what this song is about (Wikipedia tells me the title translates to 'To the Teeth') but it's just so upbeat and fun that I couldn't help but love it. This deserved to be a #1 in my charts but it just wasn't to be. I think I might even say that this has overtaken 'Havana' to be my favourite track from Camila.

I wasn't planning on starting the top 10 today but why not do one to whet the appetite? For my #10 this of 2022 we have to go back to a track released in late 2020 that passed me by until I saw Olivia Rodrigo in concert in July. Supporting Olivia was Baby Queen and she closed her set with a song that really stood out to me. I honestly didn't even realise it was just one song during the show and the French bridge put me off. Her performance of this was brilliant and her anecdote that it was written about Jodie Comer only made it more intriguing. This is such an earworm and I still haven't properly got it out of my head since July. I have heard other songs from her but none have stuck in the memory. I will have to go back and give them a proper listen again some time soon. This is the perfect song for a concert setting, the outro is euphoric and great for a crowd sing-a-long.

In January last year, Ashe teased this song by releasing a video using the bridge of this song and as soon I saw the clip posted on Twitter I became a little bit obsessed with it. The bridge is so good and hearing it out of context really made me excited for what the whole song was going to sound like. It ended up taking another two months before we heard the full track but it was worth the wait. It took me a few listens to be on board because I didn't think the rest of the track lived up to the promise of the bridge but when it finally clicked, it clicked hard. It has a fun, summery vibe to it so maybe that delay wasn't so bad after all, it doesn't feel like a January release at all. Fun fact: this video was filmed in Mexico but when they flew back to America, they discovered that the footage was ruined so they had to fly back out to Mexico and re-record the whole video again.

Anitta's EOY History:

2022 08 Boy's Don't Cry

Following Anitta on social media, it appeared that she made every effort to try and crack America in 2022 and it started in January with the release of the English language 'Boys Don't Cry' that became a 4 week #1 in my chart after originally debuting at #2 behind Charli XCX's 'Beg For You'. This is a continuation of the 80th synth influenced trend that has given The Weeknd and other such large success over the past few years and it doesn't offer much original but what it is, is just a brilliantly produced (Rami & BURNS) and brilliantly written pop record. It's undeniably catchy and felt like something that could have easily caught on for her. The only issue with this track is that Anitta has clearly went to the Ariana Grande circa 'positions' era school of song lengths because at a measly 2:20, this song just leaves you wanting so much more.

2022 68 You're So Cool

2022 73 What's Your Problem?

2022 76 Don't Come Back

What a brilliant way to kick-start my top 10 with four wonderfully talented female singers, all with different nationalities, getting their first EOY Top 10 appearance. 'What Would You Do?' is another track that I heard a clip before it's official release but it hadn't struck quite the same level of excitement in me as the Ashe one did. However, when it dropped it instantly became a favourite. The video is really fun and Tate's dancing ability really gives her an advantage over a lot of her contemporaries when it comes to the music video department with her highlighting some particularly impressive moves in this one. The little beat switch in the bridge works perfectly with the vibe of the track and feels so natural coming from Tate. Charlie Puth is credited as one of the writers and producers of this track so I think I'm safe in saying this is my favourite thing he's ever worked on (even if I do love 'Oops').

2022 06 We Cry Together (Kendrick Lamar feat. Taylour Paige)

In a year where I've been going back and listening to so many classic Hip-Hop albums for the first time, I would say that 2022 was not a stellar year for the genre as a whole. This is the sole entry in my top 10 that's not pop and Kendrick is the only male to appear in my top 10. And even then, Taylour Paige does steal the show away from him more than a fair bit on this track. That is some achievement from someone who is not even an MC but an (highly talented) actor. I'm not much of a musical guy, but one thing the music video did make me think is how much I would be here for Kendrick and/or Taylour to write and star in a show based on this track as they give great performances and this feels like the perfect proof-of-concept that the idea would work. I'm not sure what is says about me that I find a 6 minute track of a couple aggressively arguing together to be one of the most appealing songs of the year but I couldn't stop myself from having this on constant repeat. I heard the girl sitting next to me at the Kendrick concert said to her boyfriend before the show that she really hopes he performs this one which gives my some hope that I'm not completely crazy for finding it such a treat to listen to. The fact that the music video was filmed in March 2020, just before the pandemic, and yet pretty much every line stayed the same before the official release is impressive.

In 2021, I completely fell in love with Maisie's music and especially 'Psycho' and thought she would have absolutely no chance of ever topping that and here we are a year later with a track that I love pretty much equally as much. There's something I find completely engrossing about the pre-chorus. It sounds like she's trying to be really rock 'n' roll (in the "line up line up", "eyes shut eyes shut" and "sign up sign up" parts) but her voice just isn't strong enough for it and the juxtaposition of what I expect and the actual song is what attracts me in and means I can't stop listening to it. If this really isn't going to be on her upcoming album then it's a crime. It's holding strong, still comfortably in the top 10 in my most recent chart which suggests that this could have easily ended up in the medal positions if it had been released just a little bit earlier.

“Lavender Haze” is such a bop, love that it made your top 20. Great lyric choice too!

The Maisie tracks, Nonsense, Beg For You, Another Man’s Jeans, what would you do? are my other favourites <3

Looking forward to seeing the top 4!

Great picks there. Hopefully 'Nonsense' can continue it's current trend and become a big hit.

Madison Beer cements herself as one of my absolute favourite artists currently with her 8th entry in this year's countdown rewarding her, not only with a 7 week #1, but her first entry in my EOY top 10, landing at #4. And with this song still being in the top 10 in my latest chart announced yesterday, just like with 'Not Another Rockstar, the top 3 beckoned if it was released just a tad earlier in the year. The song interpolates 'You Showed Me' by The Turtles; a 1968 release and the song fully embraces these retro vibes with the old-timey tinged production and Madison's sultry vocals. I haven't heard many other pop songs like this recently which gives it such an addictive edge. 'Life Support' is one the most important albums for me so I'm going to be excited for the follow-up either way but with the first two tracks we've heard from the project, she has already shown a completely different side and encompassed completely different influences which is showing proper evolution and makes me even more intrigued to hear it.

Blackpink are the only artist to have multiple entries in this years top 10 and they begin with the 2nd single from their album, 'Shut Down'. This is an incredibly self-referential song with the lyrics openly discussing the criticism they receive for the long wait between their releases (I don't speak Korean but I'm reliably informed the opening line translates roughly too 'It’s not a comeback, because I never left'), adding their previous catchphrases in the verses ("Blackpink in your area") and the video that shows they re-visiting and 'shutting down' the sets from their most iconic music videos (I screamed when I first saw Jisoo with an umbrella again). This is one of their 'hip-hop' influences tracks and I would go far as saying it's the most 'hip-hop' single they've released. I was surprised when I first listened to it because they usually relegate this type of song as album tracks. But it makes sense as a single as it's perfect for live shows and the energy during the concerts when they performed this was palpable. The Violin strings to open (it's obviously a sample but my classical music knowledge is none so I don't have any idea where from) is epic and lets you know right off the bat that you're in for a treat.

This means it all come down to the inevitable. The two starring acts of my 2022 are battling out for the #1 spot. Charli XCX is hoping to gain her first while Blackpink are trying to gain their 3rd EOY chart topper in the 10 years of my chart.

For the second year in a row it's close, but no cigar for Charli XCX as she just missed out on an EOY #1 but is able to match her previous peak gained by 'Fancy' in 2014. Not bad for an album track! This song is perfection. Lightning is a song that is 100x better when you listen with earphones because what elevates the track from great to legendary is all of the production choices made and little sounds splattered throughout that you don't notice unless it's going directly in your ear. Huge shout out to Ariel Rechtshaid for producing it. He's someone whose worked with Charli from the start, producing nearly every track on her debut album (True Romance) and Charli decided she wanted to go revisit that sound for one track and thank god she did. There's something about Charli and synths that lead to something brilliant because between this and 'New Shapes' and the countless over synth-y tracks that she's released, I think she now, for me, owns the sound. I can't decide between this and NS for which is my favourite of her songs, but what I do know is that they're definitely the pinnacle of the 80s synth trend that has dominated the charts of recent times. You can inject that bridge straight into my veins and the chorus is by far the best of the year.
