One of the best selling albums of all time (although amazingly after 364 weeks in the charts it never got to No. 1), with themes of ageing, madness, money and death. The album is so well integrated it is hard to imagine any of the songs played without the context of the others. Tracks like Breathe, Money, Us and them and Time.

Surely a must for your record collection.

The answer is clearly a big YES, one of the most important albums ever recorded and a clearly huge influence on the Rave/Trance/Ambient generation as well as bands like Radiohead, etc.... And I dont understand people who rate stuff like "Tubular Bells" not 'getting' this album tbh....

It's perhaps not the best Floyd album, I feel that "Wish You Were Here" was probably better because it was more personal to them...

that would be me then! ....lol..

i can understand the composition and melody in 'tubular bells' but i cant get any enjoyment out of 'dsotm', to me its mostly a dis-jointed mess. for an album to be influencial, it doesnt have to be good! but inspirational.

Disjointed...? Hardly, 'dis-jointed' implies that they didn't give any thought to the form or structure of the compositions, and you can hardly accuse Pink Floyd of not putting thought into things, if anything, you can probably accuse Floyd of thinking a bit too much.... "Dark Side..." is a meticulously crafted album, not a single note is out of place and there is reason behind everything Gilmour, Waters, Wright and Mason did on that album, unlike tedious, overblown Prog w/ank like Yes, ELP and Genesis....

You'll notice that Pink Floyd were about the only band of that particular era to keep their credibility and cool factor during the Punk revolution when the others faded into oblivion or were regarded as a joke....

That's possible why Johnny Rotten wore a Pink Floyd Tshirt with "I HATE" written across it.

...and in October 2006 he got on stage with Sandi Thom in LA, so............(mind you he probably only did that as Malcolm McLaren has hailed Lily Allen as "The greatest Popstar of the 21st Century so far!")

Personally, DSOTM is in my Top15 Albums of all-time. It is a fully realised concept album, without an ounce of self indulgence or filler.

scott... ive heard all this before, im fully aware of the theory behind it but the facts are simply, i just dont get it, i dont like it.

it's a fantastic album, but not my favourite of Pink Floyd's. That goes to Wish You Were here for me, or maybe even Final Cut.

The live gig on over Christmas was just jaw-droppingly brilliant.

They may be fat old men who race sports cars and make mediocre music nowadays, but Pink Floyd will always be one of Britain's finest ever bands, no doubt.
