The ARIA Awards are going through a similar thing. They changed the gendered awards to Best Solo Artist 2 years ago, with the upgraded 10 nominations, but so far they've only had 7/20 of those slots for women, 0/20 for non-binary artists and both winners have been men (at the very least both are Indigenous Australians, which is itself an issue of inclusiveness). Feels like both populism & critical appraisal both tend to naturally slide to an unchecked male bias that rears its ugly head in every time they have to show their working.

I think this is the key (from BBC's article linked above):

And, with a few notable exceptions, it still feels like labels don't know how to develop female acts once they reach a certain level. How did Mabel go from best female in 2020 to zero nominations in 2022? Her album was good, but badly promoted. No wonder she quit to work with Dua Lipa's former managers a month after it was released.

Add the famous feud between Raye and Polydor to that, there indeed seems to be an issue of a sort.

actually I think Mabel is also on Polydor

What is the criteria for nomination/win? Is it Critical Acclaim, Popularity or both?

Stormzy's album was liked by the critics but underperformed and Firebabe was propped up from #1 on Amazon Christmas. He is well liked and connected in the industry but that's all

Cat Burns should have never been in the rising star category cause I don’t recall anyone before who loses that category but still gets to perform on the night …

+ Best Pop Act with one song? It's favouritism and it's such a flimsy category. Mimi Webb, Little Simz or another R&B artist could have scooped a nomination instead.

100% expecting George Ezra to be announced as a performer.

Little Simz isn’t eligible this year tbh, and would be in the hip-hop category anyway.

At least Cat Burns released an EP last year though, Mimi Webb only released three songs. Dua Lipa is the strange one from the category.

Isn't Dua Lipa a Brit favourite? Mimi Webb released 3 chart singles in 2022 which is more consistent success than some of the others riding on one TikTok song. It doesn't seem like much thought was put into the shortlist but it doesn't matter as Harry will win.

Dua is, but she also only released two songs last year - both as features.

And to be fair, the shortlist cannot really have any “thought” put into it as it’s compiled from the votes of 200+ people!

I hope that means Lizzo will at least win Best International Single for About Damn Time  :cheer:
Stormzy is the next performer to be announced.

What have they decided he is winning then? :funky:

Stormzy is the next performer to be announced.
Hope he brings out FLO and they do the Hide & Seek Remix and then it maybe transitions in to one of there songs .

Have enjoyed Stormzy's previous BRITs performances but not sure he has the material to make one this year of much interest. Unless he does 'This Is What I Mean' (or 'Mel Made Me Do It' lol)
