A bit like the old radio programe Desert Island discs, if you were stranded on a desert island with your Ipod or Cd player, but you could only have your 12 favourite tracks of all time with you, what would they be.

I will have to go and think about this.

quite a bizarre post when you reach the euphoric trance part

and electricity will be turned off at 11.45pm local time as so not to encourage a local version of quizmania

I know this is an old topic now, but you don't get away from us that easily. :P I'll stick to the rules though and go for my top 12 songs from 2000 and earlier. I was going to base this on my how much I've played them on iTunes this year but that would give me three Janet Jackson songs and four Spice Girls songs. I know I have narrow tastes but I'd need a little more variety than that if I could only have 12 songs.

01. Beverley Knight - Greatest Day

I have to start off with my favourite artist and my favourite 'retro' song of hers. It's such a feel good song which I'd probably need to cheer me up after being stranded on an island.

02. Janet Jackson - Together Again

This may be too cheesy for most but this is probably my favourite song of the 90s. (take that comment with a pinch of salt, I first listened to music 'properly' in 1999 when I was 9) This is Janet at her best. I've tried to get into her music but she's really hit and miss with me. I'm obsessed with 'Black Cat', 'The Best Things In Life Are Free', 'All For You', 'Feedback' and this track but the other tracks I've heard from her don't grab me.

03. Brandy & Monica - The Boy Is Mine

It wouldn't be an Aaron list without an abundance of R&B females filling it. I actually only heard it for the first time this year, 10 years after the initial release but it's one of my favourite umm...re-discoveries. (does it count if you missed it the first time around?) There's just something about this track that made me fall in love with it, but I can't place my finger on what it is.

04. Spice Girls - Viva Forever

It was almost impossible to pick just one song from my favourite girl group who are up there as one of my favourite artists. I went for 'Viva Forever' as it's arguably their most credible track and probably my favourite from them, I do love a bit of 'Too Much' and 'Say You'll Be There' though, it could have been any of the three.

05. Mariah Carey - Always Be My Baby

Oh look, one of those dreaded artists. I don't care what anyone says, Mariah is great. -_- She has so many 'retro' tracks to choose from but 'Always Be My Baby' is probably my favourite and like the Brandy & Monica track I only heard it for the first time this year. I could have easily filled this whole album with Mariah tracks but this would be my one choice because it was so instant on me.

06. Mary J Blige - I'm Goin' Down

What's better than a track with a diva belting out the lyrics, making you want to sing along? A fork in the eye I hear most of you saying. You wont like the next one then...

07. Whitney Houston - One Moment In Time

Yeah, yeah, I know it's the awful Whitney. I love her music personally. My mum must have played her songs a lot when I was a child because I've always known most of her big early hits when they were released before I was born. This has always been my favourite from her.

08. Aaliyah - Try Again

Another R&B female here. This was rightfully her biggest hit until she tragically lost her life aged 22, sending 'More Than A Woman' to the top of the charts. This probably sold more though as it was released in a time when sales were at a higher level. I'm only particularly obsessed with the two mentioned tracks from Aaliyah. But what I like I really like and this is good enough to get in my top retro records. (well, with me limiting artists to one track each)

09. Destiny's Child - Bug A Boo

I've probably mentioned this track in another thread here but this is the track that made me get into Destiny's Child, I liked 'Bills, Bills Bills' before this but when I heard this I had to hear more and now they are one of my favourite acts.

10. The Cardigans - Lovefool

Another cheesy song on my list that got big in 1997. (the first being 'Together Again') This is just a good pop song which I need on this list.

11. Dinah Washington - Mad About The Boy

Going back...well I don't know just how old this track is. The original was written in the 30s I believe, but I don't know when Dinah would have recorded this. I'm not sure who the most famous recording of this song is, but this is the one that I know and love.

12. Dusty Springfield - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me

I first heard this on Eastenders when Pauline played one time. It really got me into this song and inspired me to find more from her and I liked what I could find. I just love her voice.

I always feel like I should apologise far how bad my list would is for the rest of you, this could probably be '12 tracks you'd hate to be left with on a desert island' for most regulars in here.

I think people always prefer the eras they grew up in, or at least lived through. But maybe that's because I'm 18 so I haven't been into music for long enough - in 40 years I might look back and prefer something like the 2020s over the 90s/00s. Maybe I haven't put enough effort into 'discovering' music from before my time as there are people younger than me on here who are fans of Punk and the like.

I like to blame my 'poor taste' on it being the music I was brought up on but that's not really the case as my Dad was into the likes of Oasis, Blur, The Verve, Pulp and Madness when I was young but I preferred to listen to my Mum's CD collection of Gabrielle, Robson & Jerome, Whitney Houston etc. and my own Spice Girls CDs. So I can't say there wasn't slightly 'better' music was around in my household. In retrospect I wish I listened to my Dad's CDs more as I'd rather be able to call myself a Verve, Blur or Oasis fan than a Mariah, Spice Girls and Whitney one - and maybe I could have had something in common with him. (but that's a different subject ) That sort of music is just incredibly difficult for me to access, Rock, Britpop, Indie, Metal etc. just doesn't appeal to me in the same way.

Anyway, I'm glad you liked at least two songs from my list. ^_^ I'm a big fan of Dusty too but admittedly it's her more well known songs I'm a fan of. (You Don't Have To Say You Love Me, The Look Of Love, I Only Want To Be With You, I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself, Son Of A Preacher Man) I quite like the female voices from the 50s and 60s but it's not always easy to get for me, I'm not brave enough to go into a shop and pick up a copy of The Best Of Dusty Springfield/Dinah Washington/Nina Simone etc.

1. Yoko Ono - Walking On Thin Ice - the most perfect song ever made IMO.

2. Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata - the perfect funereal song.... which may be apt if you're starving on a desert island... gorgeous piece of music.

3. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (I prefer This Woman's Work...but it's too sad)

4. Grace Jones - Pull Up To The Bumper

5. ABBA - The Day Before You Came - ABBA's most brillaint moment ever - superb

6. Siouxsie and the Banshees - Peek-a-boo

7. Soft Cell - Martin

8. Alison Moyet - Momma Momma (a cover of the Melanie song... this is just stunning)

9. Alison Moyet - If You Don't Come Back To Me

10. Pet Shop Boys - Paninaro - just a brilliant track..... even now.

11. Marmion - Schoneberg (possibly, IMO, THE greatest dance record ever made)

12. Sultana - Te Amo (and the second greatest dance record ever made... simply incredible...even now all these years on...the breakdown at 1.58 would get me dancing all over the beach without a care in the world  )

bump - this is a great thread.... have we all participated ;)

I know my top 5 songs - they would be..

Maximo Park - Our Velocity

Michael Buble - Home

Kate Nash - Foundations

Jason Mraz - A Beautiful Mess

Justice vs Simian - We Are Your Friends.

I was born musically fairly recently :P. As for the other 7, I'd have to get back to you. Probably an Elton John classic like 'Something About The Way...' or 'I Guess That's Why Thet Call It The Blues' in there too..
