Mark King has been suspended from the World Snooker Tour pending the outcome of an investigation into irregular betting patterns.

King, winner of the 2016 Northern Ireland Open to end a 25-year wait for a ranking title, will not be allowed to take part in or attend any event on the snooker schedule until further notice.

A statement from WST read: "WPBSA Chairman Jason Ferguson has today taken the decision to suspend Mark King from attending or competing on the World Snooker Tour with immediate effect.

"This follows an initial investigation of irregular betting patterns reported to the WPBSA on the match between Mark King and Joe Perry at the Welsh Open on 13th February 2023.

"The suspension will remain in place until the conclusion of the investigation or any subsequent charges that may or may not be brought. Mark King has the right to appeal this decision."

King's match with Perry saw him lose 4-0 before going on to miss out on qualification for the Six Reds World Championship.

The Hawk has been knocked out 4-0 by Scott Donaldson.

Current ranking is 14, but with no more points available for him before the Wac, presumably there is a chance he may have to qualify for The Crucible

Shaun Murphy beat Kyren Wilson in the Tour Championship final to claim his second ranking title of the season.

Murphy, 40, who also won February's Players Championship, triumphed 10-7 to pocket a prize of £150,000 in Hull.

The 2005 world champion is only the third player after Neil Robertson and Ronnie O'Sullivan to win all three Players Series events.

WST announce that for this season only, up to 68 players will qualify for the 2023/24 season based on the two-year world rankings after the 2023 Cazoo World Championship rather than the usual 64.

This step will see all players on the two-year world rankings up to Mark Davis (but no lower than him in the world rankings), set to finish the season in 68th position, qualify for a further year on the World Snooker Tour, retaining all of the points that they had accrued over the past two years.

The move will also result in some changes to the players re-qualifying as the top players on the one-year list with Xu Si and Mark Joyce now qualifying for a full tour card. The one-year list will now be made up of Daniel Wells, Jimmy White, Ian Burns and Hammad Miah, the four highest ranked players on the one-year list who haven’t qualified for the tour through other means, and these four players will receive two-year tour cards.

With R O’Sullivan and J Higgins reaching the last 8 at the Crucible a magical streak continues.

Since 1995 the quarterfinals of the World Championship have featured at least one player from the Class of 92 (Williams, Higgins, O’Sullivan).

This was the 29th year in a row then!
