Andy Murray is through to the second round of the Canadian Open in Toronto after a straight-set victory over Lorenzo Sonego in blustery Toronto.

 

Murray, 36, beat the Italian 7-6 (7-3) 6-0 in two hours and nine minutes at the ATP Masters 1,000 event.

 

The Scot previously won the tournament in 2009, 2010 and 2015.

 

British number one Cameron Norrie was beaten 7-5 6-4 by Australia's Alex de Minaur, while compatriot Dan Evans lost to Canadian wildcard Gabriel Diallo.

Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the US Open due to injury, the tournament organised have said.

 

The Australian has been beset by injury problems this year and has played just one ATP Tour match in 2023.

 

Kyrgios missed Wimbledon with a wrist injury, while knee and foot injuries kept him out of the Australian Open and French Open respectively.

 

The 28-year-old's lack of time on the court has seen him slide down 57 places to 92 in the world rankings.

American Gauff will face compatriot and doubles partner Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals in Montreal.

 

Pegula swept past Italy's Jasmine Paolini 6-4 6-0 to secure her place in the last eight.

 

The American got the job done before the rain arrived, which disrupted play for most of the day and causing several matches to be postponed.

Andy Murray apologised to the crowd at the Canadian Open after withdrawing from the tournament with an abdominal strain.

 

The 36-year-old Briton was due to face Italian seventh seed Jannik Sinner in the last 16 after beating Max Purcell in the second round.

Venus Williams beat a top-20 player for the first time in four years with victory over Russia's Veronika Kudermetova in Cincinnati.

 

Williams, 43, fought back from a double break down in each set to win 6-4 7-5 against 16th-ranked Kudermetova.

 

The seven-time major singles champion smiled broadly as she celebrated winning at a US tournament for the first time in more than three years.

 

"I love this game, it's what I do," said Williams, who is ranked 533rd.

 

"The last few years have been difficult in terms of injuries but I love to be out here, be strong and be myself. I'm getting there."

Andy Murray has returned to Great Britain's Davis Cup team for the ties against Australia, France and Switzerland in Manchester next month.

 

The three-time Grand Slam champion was left out of the squad for the 3-1 win against Colombia in February.

Novak Djokovic avenged his Wimbledon final defeat to Carlos Alcaraz by beating the Spaniard in just under four hours to win the Cincinnati Open.

 

The Serb survived match point in the second set before going on to win 5-7 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-4).

 

Top seed Alcaraz beat Djokovic in five sets in last month's Wimbledon final.

 

"The feeling that I have on the court reminds me a little bit of when I was facing [Rafael] Nadal when we were at our prime," Djokovic said.

 

"I don't think I've played too many matches like this in my life."

That was an epic, top quality final. I stayed up late to watch it finish.

I stayed up but after that game where Djokovik lost it with 3 double faults I went to sleep thinking Alcaraz was gonna be 100% certain :D
