It's technically no longer #1 combined on Spotify but its very high sales will likely help maintain things for at least another week. That competition of course comes from "Boy's a liar" which vaults up to #3 this week despite being strangely low on Hot Hits Australia. The song is co-produced with Mura Masa who had a top 20 hit in 2017 with "Love$ick" so it's also now his highest charting song too. It's a bit of a clean out of the top 10 but with the arrival of "Sure Thing", one that makes the top 10 considerably older on average. It's Miguel's second ever top 10 hit after "#Beautiful" which got to #6 in 2013. Coi Leray also jumps into the top 10 at the expense of The Kid LAROI which is a hard sentence to explain to your parents. Luke Combs didn't make the top 50 with the last song he released but this time he does much better and lands in the top 30, but it looks to be shortlived until the album comes out. Though the tour is over, Post Malone actually has an uncharacteristic climb for "I Fall Apart" that brings it back into the top 50, one has to imagine the omnipotent Spotify top 50 effect got it over the line. Incidentally that does not apply to Linkin Park as they spent the entire week not in the Spotify top 50 but still manage to sneak in with "Lost". Also sneaking in, SZA's "Snooze", doing well for itself as it was only about the 11th highest SZA song when the album first came out. The New Music chart doesn't capture it but I have to imagine Fred again..'s "Jungle" was extremely close to making the top 50 this week (it's above "Rumble" on the dance chart) which would've been pretty wild. Paramore score their 3rd #1 album this week. It's kind of what they've been doing ever since "Brand New Eyes", although "After Laughter" made the foolhardy decision to be released on the same week as "Harry Styles". None of the singles have charted from the album but they have started getting played on triple j lately which is crazy character development from the late 2000s. Pierce The Veil first charted in 2016 and made #12. I had not noticed that they'd had an even longer gestation period than Paramore but they're back with their newest album giving them a first time top 10. In typical Australian fashion, waiting for the AU news cycle in response to the US news cycle means that Rihanna's Super Bowl hype peaked on like Wednesday, I'm actually not sure her songs were even acknowledged on the ARIA Chart but she does have two albums returning. We're also seeing the prelude to Harry Styles & Ed Sheeran who are both on opposite sides of the country right now. That'll certainly pick up again next week. They won't go back to #1 on the albums chart though because there's a new P!nk album out now as I imagine you were aware.

It's getting a little dicey as it's been usurped on Spotify but with a huge sales gap I'd rate it the favourite to be #1 again next week. Miguel does in fact match his best past chart peak with an even older song but otherwise there's not much else to note in the top 50 this week. Really this week is just a prelude to the fact that Harry Styles & Ed Sheeran are currently touring and both hit the major population centres in the past week, so while they're up a decent amount this week, steel yourself for next week's utter chaos. Also "Die For You" will probably jump into the top 5. There is however a bit of a clear out on the New Music chart (and I believe "10:35" and "Rich Flex" will both be out in the next 2 weeks), so now we're up to #14 being out of the top 50! Once again the highest actually bubbling under hit is likely not represented as I'd strongly suspect "ceilings" just missed the top 50 this week, but we do have actual non-top 50 hits courtesy of P!nk, Libanca & Niall Horan. The former two are almost definitely taking a dive next week but Niall will likely vault into the top 50, even if he magically stopped getting streams today which as we've learnt is not impossible. Welcome to Australia, P!nk is #1 obviously. This is her 6th consecutive #1 studio album + obviously her Greatest Hits went to #1 as well. The tale of the tape is usually a question of how many weeks she'll spend at #1 and you'd suspect Gorillaz and Harry Styles could provide slight challenges but it's hers to lose really. One of Skrillex's two new albums enters this week. He's had 5 top 50 albums although this is only the second of those that is actually a Skrillex album.

A man can dream :cheer: ) These past couple of months have been weird. I don't think I've ever really written at length on this topic so I hope you can forgive me using this thread as my soap box. (If you're just here to read about the new chart, I recommend skipping the next 5 paragraphs x) I've always marched to the beat of my own drum to an extent. I had a lot in common with what was well liked in the alternative scene for ages but would also run down my own rabbit holes as we all do. Ever since around 2018 this has gone completely off the rails. There's a certain expectation when you hear that someone likes indie music. It's more niche than pop music, but it still has the same sort of conglomeration around the more universally agreed upon artists. Be that RYMcore, P4Kcore, AOTYcore or whatever. I don't know if it's considered cooler to listen to BC,NR or instead something lesser known, opinions probably vary. In any case there's an inherent 'coolness' that's adopted which leads to perceptions of superiority. I reject that superiority because the music I listen to doesn't really fall into either camp. We're more talking about indie music that's obscure by way of it probably getting heard and passed up, or just not heard at all and if it was, it wouldn't get much interest either because it's not what people are interested in, or if it is, people are so territorial about these things that they'll dismiss it as a weaker facsimile of something that is approved. Also I listen to a lot of Australian music and that almost always gets a bad wrap online because there are far less of us to stick up for it and try to assert it into popular discourse. Which is to say I'm long beyond the expectation that music I listen to will make any discernable impact. I discovered Lizzy's music properly a little over a year ago. Actually I suspect that if not for poorly counted Thursday data, she would have made the ARIA top 50 last week and it would have been published on the exact one year anniversary of when I first listened to "reckless driving", a song I might have skipped over if not for a really compelling bridge and outro that reminded me a lot of "I Know The End", my favourite Phoebe song. I grew to like it a lot and it's my most listened to song of the last roughly 5 years. About a month after it came out, I listened to the album and really took to it immediately, helped by songs like "erase me" and "doomsday" that operated on unexpected but really engaging dynamics. It became apparent quickly that she operated on a basis of chucking in surprise twists and turns in her songs, whether it's the dramatic shifts in songs like "firearm" or "hate to be lame", or when you get those lyrical moments in "ceilings" or "chemtrails" that make you realise what the song's really been about the whole time. Maybe it sounds gimmicky written out like that but it just works on a sonic level and I latched onto her writing style really strongly. I wish I could tell you what I thought about "ceilings" initially but I think with the title that doesn't stick out, it's not one that I really could remember looking at the tracklist. I did however come to notice down the track around July that it was actually on the top of her Spotify top 10 which I might have initially dismissed as it being chill playlist fodder (let's be honest, it is), but it did also seem to be a fan favourite so I went back to it, and it clicked so hard into place. I still prefer "reckless driving" but "ceilings" had a hold on me and I became fascinated at its slow burn popularity, where I think I noticed around August that both it and the album were getting more plays on last.fm than the week the album actually came out. In September I started tracking its daily stats on Spotify because I was curious to see if it was catching up to "hate to be lame", at the time the most streamed song on the album, back when the songs were on 5.5 & 10 million streams respectively. The upward trend continued and the rest as you can figure is history. This is all just to say that it has been a very long time since I last had something to root for in the charts like this. Even when the possibility arrives, I'm used to getting screwed over, like how BENEE (back when she was just called Bene) was poised to crack the top 50 with "Soaked", my second favourite song of 2018, only for dumb beaurocracy to get in the way which meant that it never charted at all. My other favourite top 50 hit of recent times is "XO TOUR Llif3" which did chart but got so royally screwed over by a logistic error midway into its chart run that it soured the excitement. Never before has a song hit the ARIA top 50 a full 7 months after it topped my own personal charts so I am absolutely going to indulge in every moment of this. She's quite low at the moment in this particularly hectic chart but I'm expecting some strong progress in the coming weeks. Anyway as for this week's chart, "Flowers" is #1 for a 7th week. The 8th week is looking a bit more up in the air. She's down to effectively #3 on Spotify but PinkPantheress significantly lacks sales still and The Weeknd's suspiciously high streams on Spotify are not at all being reciprocated on Apple (and his sales aren't great either). For the time being though, The Weeknd once again tacks Ariana Grande onto an old song and climbs up to #3. The funniest aspect of this for me is because on the surface, it makes it look like "As It Was" has stalled out despite having one of the biggest climbs for his catalogue this week. He just wrapped up his Australian tour this week but that still carries well into the next tracking week so expect his songs to remain very high again. It's hard to believe that Ed Sheeran is once again having one of the most successful Australian tours of all time and he's still being relatively overshadowed, as I suspect Harry Styles is singlehandedly keeping "Shape Of You", "Celestial" and maybe "Thinking Out Loud" out of the top 50. Outside of that, it's still a fairly busy week with some big debuts. Superstar Pride has the highest at #20, although he's retreated back down quite a bit so he might not get any higher. That's almost certainly also true of Niall Horan who as you might suspect, had a terrific second week out of nowhere but next week looks to Sabrina Carpenter his way out of here. If not for my loonery I would say the most peculiar debut this week comes from MK & Dom Dolla. I don't know if this is surprising or not but MK has actually never charted before in Australia, apart from me just now learning that he contributed to a couple of Pitbull's hits, but nothing like "Look Right Through" or "17" has made any real impression over here. Dom Dolla also hasn't charted but has made a name for himself, getting roughly 1 Hottest 100 entry per year in recent times, his most recent, "Miracle Maker", is an absolute banger. Also Q-Tip is sampled on the song which just goes to show that he's had an extremely long spanning era of hitmaking. In this house we stan A Tribe Called Quest. "Rhyme Dust" actually debuted at #13 on Spotify which I have to assert is extremely unusual in Australia where hardly anything ever impacts out the gate on New Music Friday. Hot Hits Australia has updated about 3 times since the song has come out and still not added it which is also making its longevity look pretty dicey, despite the fact that it's free Aussie quota. Morgan Wallen also climbs into the top 10, getting just a little bit higher than Sam Hunt did with "Body Like A Back Road". He's hard pressed to have the biggest modern pop country crossover hit because technically "Meant To Be" got to #2 and "One Too Many" got to #6, but it's fairly notable. Oddly enough though it doesn't look certain that he'll be able to get another top 50 entry next week although "Ain't That Some" and "You Proof" could sneak in, so it's interesting to see just how focused the attention is on the one song. Notable on the Bubbling aspects this week, ONEFOUR enter with their best performing new single in a fair while, which actually has gotten the Hot Hits Australia tick of approval for some reason, while SZA climbs up with "Low", actually the first time it's ever been on this chart because it's never done better than 4th place for SZA until now. The album chart caught me off guard admittedly but I guess I underestimated just how much Harry Styles' streams have been adding up. He's back at #1 for the first time in many months, blocking Gorillaz who score their highest charting album in over a decade. 2010's "Plastic Beach" is to date their only #1 album as "Demon Days" lost out to System of a Down back in the day. Furthermore, it's pretty unheard of but P!nk is down to #3 already on week 2. I'd assume everyone's making way for Morgan Wallen next week but with limited physical availability and streaming that is being well outpaced by Harry Styles, he could be set for another #2 peak. Also debuting in the top 10 we've got an Australian icon in Tim Rogers, who you should know as the lead singer of You Am I who you'd do yourself a favour to listen to because they're one of the best bands of the '90s. He's charted many solo albums over the years but this is the first time he's made the top 10. He previously collaborated with The Twin Set back in 1999 and peaked at #14, which is also the only solo album of his that lasted more than a week in the top 50. Adam Lambert also makes the top 10, keeping up his perfect record as this is his 5th time in the echelon. For the past couple of weeks, there's only been one Australian album in the top 50 but refreshingly we've got a few this week. Also debuting is Kingswood, making the top 20 for the 4th time. It's been a while since I listened to them and I think they've changed up their sound a bit but they used to be a remarkable dead ringer for Queens of the Stone Age. On the more modern end of the spectrum, we've got The Terrys, who made the Hottest 100 in 2021 with their biggest hit "Our Paradise". Every other song I've heard of theirs sounds like a re-creation of that song, but it is a good one so I don't blame them. We've also got Gracie Abrams charting for the first time. Ed Sheeran joins Harry Styles in having his entire studio album catalogue on the chart again.
March 8, 20232 yr I wonder if P!nk can return to #1 in the albums chart this week. She normally gets multiple weeks at #1.
March 8, 20232 yr Author Unless there's some sales being shipped in this week it's not a chance. Harry's going to annihilate on streams again even if it's starting to wane.

You would think that the album release would buoy it again but it's actually been dropping faster than "Boy's a liar" on Spotify lately, so it keeps this race open again although I imagine the margin is still too strong on other platforms to change anything. Actually pretty much everything in the top 10 is on the way out presently with not much looking to slot itself in. Miley will probably debut in the top 20 with "River" next week. Morgan Wallen rises to a new peak off the album release but surprisingly doesn't score any further top 50 entries. As you can probably parse from the Bubbling Under chart, he has several not far off (+ "You Proof" is one of the highest but is too old for that chart). Harry Styles wrapped up his tour in the middle of this tracking week but mostly improves on last week's positions, while Ed Sheeran played his last show on Sunday this week and should see another good week (even though the show is in the lower population centre of Perth). If you perchance found yourself looking at this chart and thinking 'gosh, "Shivers" is a bit high, innit?', that's a fair assessment, because it got put back on Hot Hits Australia and quite high at that. Nonetheless its jump up to #10 does make the top 10 this week on average a year less old so it's impossible to say if this is helping freshen up the chart or not. Superstar Pride plummets down the chart due to the handicap of being unable to be streamed for most of the week, although I have to note that all things considered, it's a bit higher than I'd have thought. If nothing else it lends more credence to my theory that ARIA doubles up Friday streams for Thursday data or something dumb like that because it went from being way higher on Spotify last week to being a bit lower on Spotify compared to its ARIA position, very strange. Also speaking of Spotify oddities, it is quite possible that "Rhyme Dust" was getting that algorithm goodness last week but it actually declines on this week's corresponding chart. The highest Australian song on the chart this week keeps getting lower and next week we might only have two in the top 50. I'm also just going to note that "ceilings" climbed a lot and I'm very supportive of this so I don't have to change the sub-header. We've also nearly got a record low in new music in the top 50 as there are only 10 qualifying songs in this week. The only time it's been lower I believe was the week of the big Christmas boom when it dropped down to 8. ONEFOUR's Hot Hits Australia boost picks them up a bit but they're already collapsing again this week. Niall has a monster collapse now that people aren't being forced at gunpoint to listen to his music, but he may be able to stick the landing a little and hang around. On the album chart, Harry Styles is #1 again. Morgan Wallen debuts at #2 yet again, in case you were wondering, his last album missed the top spot to Barry Gibb, but is still in the top 50 to this day so he's won the long term battle I suppose. The album chart actually does have some Australian music again as the next highest debut comes from Ruel, whose big breakthrough as a young wunderkind was so long ago that maybe he's not a notably young wunderkind anymore! This is his first proper studio album although he had quite a bit of success with his 2019 EP that also peaked at #3 on the album chart. Speaking of #3, NCT 127 got there last year with the 4th album, and this re-package gets them to #13. Teenage Dads had a bit of a breakthrough last year and made the Hottest 100 for the first time with their song "Teddy". It appears on their new EP which is only 6 tracks which is just long enough to be included here. Also debuting this week is Jen Cloher who made the top 5 back in 2017 and you might know them for being romantically linked with Courtney Barnett at that time although I don't think they are anymore. Macklemore sneaks into the top 50 which is quite a drop off for him position-wise but as we know, the album chart has a tendency to exaggerate this gap. In any case, his last album had a #2 hit on it and this does not.

It's a little hard to really judge the margin on Spotify because the original version of "Boy's a liar" fell out of the top 200 a little while ago but it is possible that this will be its last week at #1, as it seems to be falling slightly faster. Aside from "Last Night", most of the top songs at the moment are dropping but being replaced by nothing. The highest new peak on the chart is actually "ceilings" at #20 but since that's basically radio poison in this country, it may as well not be there. Also the album's really good, more people should listen to it. Miley Cyrus does get the top/only debut with "River" but it doesn't seem to be catching on just yet. That said if you're on the lookout for new hits, that Calvin Harris dealie should probably do the job. Last night it got slotted in at #2 on Hot Hits Australia so it could well vault into the top 20 soon. There's probably another song climbing up too but I suspect if I don't give it any attention, it should eventually go away. I was under the impression that Miley Cyrus getting #1 albums was a regular occurrence but now I see this is only her 3rd #1 album. It does mean that she can boast 3 decades of #1 albums if you're into those sort of stats. It helps this time around that she has no competition, as the only debut for the week! If not for U2 coming in next week, I think Morgan Wallen might have a chance to climb up to #1 as he's seeing some good streaming legs for several songs. Then again maybe he can still pull it off. We're also back to only having 1 Australian album in the top 50, but maybe Ed Sheeran & Harry Styles dropping back down the chart will create a buffer in that regard.
March 21, 20232 yr Green Green Grass has taken almost one year to take off here after its release last year. I wonder if it can actually get to the top 20.

It does seem like PinkPantheress is not going to be the one to challenge it anymore though, as she's slipping back faster now. Actually if anything here is on the cards, it might be Morgan Wallen. It's hard to be certain because he just wrapped up some Australian shows which would suggest he could be trending back down, but as it stands, he's still moving on up and might be able to muscle ahead of the steadily weakening competition. He also gets a second top 50 hit this week with last year's "You Proof". Or I dunno, maybe Ed Sheeran sold a lot of physical copies here, I'm not at all privy to that sort of info until it happens. I just remember "Bad Habits" having an unremarkable start on streaming but debuting at #1 on the chart anyway. Taylor Swift has the top debut this week. I learnt this morning that saying nice things about Taylor Swift will earn you the ire of Taylor Swift fans. I suspect she could climb next week though. Calvin Harris climbs into the top 50 thanks to a massive help from Hot Hits Australia and also that funny algorithm thing, otherwise there's nothing to suggest to me that the song is much more popular than any other underperforming Calvin Harris single of late, interesting that. He's not alone anyhow though, because Meghan Trainor seems to have ridden that same algorithm to the top 50, but with Australian Idol over and the streaming also retreating hard this week, it might just be a one week thing. Then again Australia did make "Me Too" a #4 hit so you never know. J. Cole also returns to the top 50 with "No Role Modelz", roughly a year after he first made it. I have to highlight this though because the song has now spent 24 weeks in the top 50, getting no higher than #43. This week's Bubbling Under chart is actually stepping back up. I know that because I don't think Fred again.. was that far off the top 50 this week but he doesn't even make the cut for this. Luke Combs does, and I strongly suspect "5 Leaf Clover" will climb into the top 50 next week, alongside a couple other songs of his and/or Tracy Chapman's. Jimin doesn't quite make the top 50 this week but I wouldn't be surprised if he had a shot this coming week with "Like Crazy". I'm being crazy experimental with the album chart this week and adding another leading zero, just because most of the album chart entries are into their 3rd digit now and it makes it easier for me to type this up, and read it. Anyway, despite the streaming formula being somewhat against the idea of a 36 track album, Morgan Wallen's streaming has been so out of control that he can't help but climb up to #1 this week for the first time in his career. As a result, U2 land at #3 which might seem underwhelming but it is the highest peaking U2 album that starts with the words 'Songs Of'. Ocean Alley have a big re-entry thanks to a vinyl release, which manages to double the number of Australian albums in the top 50 this week. With Spacey Jane very close to slipping out, we'd be close to a net zero next week but at the very least Matt Corby should make an entrance. There's also an arrival for All Time Low, who usually end up in the top 20 but here land at #38. Next week I would think is Luke Combs' to take. Morgan Wallen could challenge him but I think their streaming is fairly level and Luke will have sales on his side. Lana Del Rey should also figure in somewhere, and maybe Depeche Mode, Fall Out Boy & BABYMETAL, who's to say?

Things are tightening up so it could forfeit next week, but Morgan Wallen is also showing declines across the board at a similar rate. Never before has the top of the chart been so close and yet so not competitive as pretty much nothing is building traction anymore. Ed Sheeran does arrive in the top 10 but is not getting some magical streaming boost in week 2 so he looks to fall back down too. Speaking of magical streaming boosts, Taylor Swift climbs up a little with her song that dropped 20 places on Spotify the other day. If the BTS Army's aim was to get a Hot 100 #1 and also to land next to "ceilings" on both the ARIA & UK Charts, then they've succeeded on both counts. Otherwise it's been a notable week for Luke Combs, who earns two new top 50 entries this week with two of his previously released singles. It's important to note that they're older singles because it seems that Sony have omitted to submit all the new tracks to the survey. Maybe the popularity of "Fast Car" caught them by surprise and it'll turn up on the chart next week or the week after. To my surprise Libianca is getting very close to the top 50 and might just do it next week as there should be less competition. Morgan Wallen debuts another entry on the Bubbling Under chart by way of the 3 track rule, and "Rhyme Dust" recovers due to finally getting added to Hot Hits Australia. By the way there are only two Australian tracks in the top 50 and it might go down to 1 next week. "STAY" jumping ahead of "Love Again" means that The Kid LAROI could potentially claim the title of longest running #1 on the Australian ARIA Chart, currently he's a couple of weeks behind "Dance Monkey", but would be far ahead if he'd stopped releasing new singles that keep knocking "STAY" off. As for the albums chart, you can't spell Luke Combs without a capital L, which in this instance takes further form in Lana Del Rey. She hit #1 with her first 4 albums but actually hadn't made the top spot since, until now. This keeps Luke Combs to a second #2 album in a row, but at least he can boast charting higher than Nelly's "Sweat" & "Suit" combo. His entire back catalogue is still in the top 50 so one would guess that he'll probably win the war anyway. Fall Out Boy on the other hand, have never had a #1 album but tend to get themselves vaguely in the mix. Their closest effort was when "Save Rock and Roll" played second fiddle to a new Michael Buble album. I also feel bad for ARIA's social media team who needed to promote the debut of Matt Corby's 3rd album as impressive at #8, ignoring that his first two albums both landed higher, notably his debut hit the top spot. But given that he has the only Australian album in the entire top 50, I guess it's a lot harder to manage these heights 16 years removed from your Australian Idol runner up fame. I haven't listened to the album yet but it's got some good singles on it. On the topic of the oppressive nature of the global music scene, Pink Floyd are back with their woke album, and Depeche Mode have their first appearance in 6 years. Fictional band Daisy Jones & The Six manage to climb into the top 50 also. I can't be sure what to expect next week except that DMA'S will try to be the new only Australian album in the top 50, and hey, boygenius are really high on the UK midweeks so surely that'll splash over here as well.

If you want to make for an interesting target, the uncredited but Billy Ray Cyrus assisted "Old Town Road" spent 13 weeks at #1. On the other hand, it seems strongly likely that this will be the last week at #1 for Miley because "Last Night" was super close this week and is eating further into that gap on streaming so far this week. The top end of the chart is fairly stagnant and well engaged into 'actually the older songs kick out the newer ones' mode. Drake could potentially debut into the top 10 and be a further example of this, but it's also possible we could see strong engagement for Luke Combs' cover of "Fast Car". Given that ARIA's website includes outrageously large Last Week positions, we have complete confirmation that the song was not included whatsoever last week, but in any case it's definitely on the up from there anyway. Australia does have a strong fascination with that particular Tracy Chapman song, given that the original went into the top 5, and then in 2016 we had two separate cover versions charting side by side with one bafflingly going to #1. With his previous highest being #12, this has a strong chance to become Luke Combs' first ever top 10 hit in the coming weeks. Speaking of songs not included on last week's survey, Tyler, The Creator makes the top 50 with "DOGTOOTH", which admittedly would not have gotten close to the chart on its midweek release but it's still worth pointing out these chart inaccuracies when they pop up. The real curiosity is that the song definitely only made the top 50 because of Hot Hits Australia's uncharacteristic fondness for it, helping steady its decline enough for it to hang on here for a week. Speaking of bizarre Spotify things, briefly over the weekend they put Meghan Trainor's "Made You Look" at the very top of the playlist, and then put it right back down to the bottom, feeling like a sort of drunk with power moment or maybe someone just wants to measure how much of a difference playlist position makes. Fifty Fifty get their first top fifty hit which I assume is good news if you like songs that sound like those Dr. Luke hit songs in recent years. Jisoo becomes the 3rd member of BLACKPINK to score a solo top 50 hit, while we have very belated entrances for both Bailey Zimmerman and Libianca. "Rock and a Hard Place" first started charting here almost a year ago, and follows in the line of many US hit songs that go high on initial streaming buzz but go even higher ages later when radio catches up even if the streaming has fizzled a bit since then. It is quite common though in some of these cases to see a decent boost over here that coincides with it though. The Bubbling Under chart gets bigger this week as SZA's album no longer qualifies as New Music, and actually Libianca also just tipped over. Central Cee will be off either next week or the week after too, it's currently the last 2022 hold out. Not much to note this week apart from the fact I'm slightly surprised Jimin managed a second week. For the second time in their career, DMA'S hit the #2 spot. Their previous album "The Glow" chose a battle with Lime Cordiale that they were likely never going to win, but maybe it's impressive that they managed to out-debut Juice WRLD's first posthumous album (though it went to #1 the very next week). DMA'S had a 7 year streak of entries in triple j's Hottest 100 that ended when they failed to manifest in 2021, but it's a streak that I think only The Living End, Illy & Peking Duk can lay claim to having beaten. They only barely made this year's list with only one of their several releases so I don't know if this album will be able to maintain their usual standard of spending more than 1 week in the top 50. Likely it means another week in a row where every Australian album in the top 50 is one that just debuted there and will be gone next week. Speaking of which, maybe the most interesting entry this week comes from Private Function. They're a band that doesn't really get a lot of airplay anywhere, but I heard about this album a while ago when it was revealed that it was initially considered illegal to sell in South Australia. The reason being that the album's vinyl contains a scratchie ticket in the sleeve with a potential prize, which is illegal to do so in South Australia without a permit. To my knowledge they will eventually press the album without it so that South Australians can buy it, but either way, it's a very funny story and it probably helped this lesser known band chart as high as #11 this week. Also the album title is very funny if you read it upside down. In-between these, we've got a top 3 debut for boygenius. Phoebe Bridgers and Julian Baker have both made the top 50 before but this is comfortably their highest chart position to date. I've also always suspected that Julian Baker's "Something" is a lost Hottest 100 hit that got a lot of buzz and airplay in 2016 but was ineligible for polling because it came out the year before. Phoebe herself has had a curious history with the poll due to limited airplay which felt out of step, but funnily enough "Kyoto" nearly polled with practically no airplay at the time. I think they've finally caught up to this though because "Sidelines" did start getting airplay and snuck into this year's list. "Emily I'm Sorry" is getting quite a bit of airplay from this album so maybe there's more to come. City and Colour debuts in the top 20, he's previously had 4 solo top 10 albums, getting as high as #2 on his own, but also again hitting #2 in his collaboration album with P!nk. Alexisonfire only once narrowly made the top 20. Tyler, The Creator returns on the back of the album's extension, and that's about all to note this week. Next week's 1 week Australian contingent looks to potentially be Cub Sport and Frenzal Rhomb. Possibly NF has a chance at the top?
