yay for Cruel Summer <3 for what I understood it was Olivia who kinda volunteer to give the royalties to Taylor and was the one putting forward that the song was inspired by Cruel Summer even though no one had ever said anything or noticed

Before I continue I just want to get out something for consideration. Say you're interested in music charts, you're probably interested in records/milestones, that sort of thing right? But ask yourself, are you truly interested in those records, or do you just want to wield them for your convenience? Does your interest hinge on your investment in what it propagates? If all of a sudden history gets made and you suddenly stop talking about it, or dismissing it, maybe you really weren't interested at all. I bring this all up because as a fan of music charts for more than half of my life, I love seeing crazy, over-the-top things happen on the charts. It's a spectacle, you wonder how much further this sort of thing can go. The discourse surrounding music charts has me confused as to what people actually want from it. Like you get the feeling that people just want a steady clockwork where nothing of note ever happens. The most remarkable things that ever happen on the charts are treated like a sign that it's gone to hell in a handbasket. But please, no more bad takes just because TayTay's popularity rocks the foundations in which you use to prop up your favourite artists.

Anyway we have a new #1 this week from Olivia Rodrigo. "vampire" is her 3rd #1 hit and second to debut at #1. It appears it'll be the only week the song spends at #1 though as it has receded back, while simultaneously, "Sprinter" has surged back up quite a bit in the past week. I'm not convinced Olivia would have won if she released this week. Not only are Dave & Cench ahead by heaps on Spotify, but last night they actually took the top spot on Apple for the first time (though I check now and "Last Night" is #1 again, suffice to say it's a much closer race than ever before). Because the ARIA Charts are funny like that, "Style" re-enters at #11, a considerably larger jump up the chart than any other Taylor Swift song this week, how weird. This week "Popular" rises into the top 20, which you might be interested to know is Madonna's first top 20 hit since "4 Minutes" in 2008(!). Also in the world of erroneously belated debuts, Gunna arrives with "f*kumean", which is up to the top 10 on Spotify so expect a bit of a rise next week, no matter how many Taylor Swift songs enter alongside that. If you're wondering about that, expect "I Can See You" to be the highest, but I'm not confident it can land much higher than #6.

Not much to note on the Bubbling Under aspects. David Guetta might be getting close to the top 50 but will have to wait for a slower week perhaps. Uzi gets just the one entry from their new album. In a few weeks we'll have a steady stream of entries aging out of the chart ("Area Codes", "Fast Car", "Eyes Closed", "Daylight", "Chemical", "Wish You The Best" etc) so who knows what will get brought up as a result?

Apropos of no prior hinting, we've got history of a sort happening this week. Despite being the week *before* the new album drops, Taylor Swift has the entire top 5 on this week's chart. If you want to be that cynic, maybe focus less on the merits of streaming vs. pure sales (the latter is of course a foreign concept to Taylor Swift???????) but more just it wasn't a big week for new releases. The highest new entry is for Lil Uzi Vert, who admittedly did score a #1 with "Eternal Atake" back in 2020 but lands at #7 this week. Nothing But Thieves split the difference between their last two albums (#8, #12) and land at #10. Back in 2018, Adam Eckersley & Brooke McClymont charted with a collaborative album. This time around the names have switched order and they've landed 10 places lower. I also must note to any non-Australians that the most controversial band in the country is a reggae rock fusion band. Paradoxically, as they've gotten more controversial, they've gotten more talked about, but in reality, their newer music doesn't really move the needle as much. Some might say this is because triple j effectively blacklisted them years ago but that would ignore the fact that their most popular song is one triple j never played. Anyway, Sticky Fingers released a new album last year, digitally only so it didn't chart. This week the vinyl is out, and does top the vinyl chart, but it lands at #37. Only scarcely not a career low because their debut album only reached #39 but has since gone platinum. I'll let you do your own research and decide for yourself whether or not they're the bad guys, although to be fair, Bluesfest literally promoted them as such when they were briefly expected to be on their line up.

"Sprinter" returns for a 5th week at #1. It's riding a second wave at the moment (possibly buoyed in the same way it just hit a new peak on US Spotify tonight), so it could be getting cozy there for a while. That also might depend on Jung Kook's sales & YouTube, because his streaming is quite promising, but it's a bigger gap to overcome than when BLACKPINK managed to sneak a #1 last year. Otherwise this is a Taylor Swift week with a guest appearance from New Jeans. I don't have much interesting to say about the chart this week but instead I have a more universal observation. The state of the chart is something that's come under increasing scrutiny this year. Like an unoiled machine left unchecked. The thing I often notice with this is that it's always a very emotionally driven observation, and with that, things don't always line up to reality. People will quickly decry that the problem with the chart is the fact that Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran or Drake or whoever is given free reign to just chart all their album tracks. I'm not here to debate the relevance of those chart weeks, but rather note that it's taken until July for this to actually happen this year. Ignoring the likes of "Last Night" and "Fast Car" which are by some definition not actually singles, this is basically a non-issue, yet it still lingers in the mind. But more so than this, I just want to highlight what ARIA's CEO said about the charts, specifically that there's a false desire to blame the charts for all of this, and subsequently a desire to arbitrarily fix the charts. As she rightly points out, the charts aren't the problem at all, they're just displaying it. Taking out your Taylor Swift album tracks, long running Glass Animals hits and whatnot, this does not change anything in the habits of music listeners. They're still going to listen to these tracks. Artists and labels aren't paid by the chart position, so whoever gets propped up as a result merely gets the illusion of greater success but without anything tangible that goes with it. You can give yourself a pat on the back and say you've fixed things (and maybe that's what the OCC have done), but you've done nothing to address the root of it, and you're just gonna get blindsided again and again as things just escalate. The album chart is perhaps more endemic of this, where it's been noted (by myself as well) the lack of Australian artists in the chart of late. An irrational thinker might simply point out that streaming is to blame, given that it typically works against Australian artists. But even then, a pure sales chart would still be only a temporary solution. You're still creating an environment where we pretend our local artists are more successful despite the fact that very few are actually listening to them. It doesn't take a genius to realise that this is not a sustainable long term model. In any case, if everyone who ever got mad about this sort of thing actually put their money where their mouth is and supported local artists, they'd surely be able to outnumber the unassailable 99.5% whose streaming ratios are so dismal as to give you a shot for glory. I suppose it's easier to complain and get mad rather than do anything (before anyone comes at me for hypocrisy, I absolutely do support local artists. More than half of the stuff I've listened to in the time I've been typing this post up has been Australian music I purchased myself, but anyone on the BuzzJack discord probably could have already figured that).

Anyway speaking of Australian music, King Gizz are on the precipice of an inauspicious chart record. Their new album whose title made up a non-insignificant percentage of my time typing this up becomes their 5th #2 album. They still don't have a #1, but I suppose it could always happen some day if formats line up properly. This album actually came out a few weeks ago digitally and only now has the vinyl shipped. Radiohead still hold this record with 6 #2 albums. Last time Radiohead released an album, it was just a week after King Gizz made their ARIA Chart debut with their belter of an album "Nonagon Infinity". They have since charted 25 more albums in the top 50. Similarly I imagine Radiohead could readily drum up sufficient numbers to get a #1 album if they chose a good week for it, which would also give Stu & co. the record by default. "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" is her 11th #1 album also in case you were wondering. The original version dropped drastically out of the top 50 this week but it's not that far off. Speaking of vinyl shipping, we've also got varying amounts of old albums from RÜFÜS DU SOL & Royel Otis debuting this week. The former album is so old that it actually debuts on the Catalogue Chart this week as well. Dominic Fike gets his second (and highest) album chart entry while PJ Harvey misses the top 40 for the first time in about 3 decades. Wham! had a big boxset out this week that ties in nicely with the Netflix doco, so it's probably not suggesting a new chart staple, but what is worth noting in that regard is CCR. I didn't mention it last week because I wanted to see where it would go, but it does seem now that a large set of Creedence's back catalogue has now been assigned streaming to this particular compilation, so it looks like it could be hanging around for a while.

Aw not another #2 for Gizz. Assuming it was nowhere close this week but maybe if they'd shipped the vinyls on a non Taylor week...
hope Troye does well, any predictions on where he could debut?

"Sprinter" is #1 for a 6th week. To my knowledge, it hasn't really gotten much of any airplay on any commercial radio stations (triple j have it in rotation but that's it). The last time this happened with a long running #1 hit was DaBaby's "ROCKSTAR", which also managed 6 weeks at #1. Since Dave & Cench are very likely to maintain this position, we're on the precipice of an unprecedented decoupling of radio & pop music. We'll see yet if that also applies to this week's #2 entry for Jung Kook. I have to imagine it was a close race particularly given "Seven"'s quite good streaming performance all things considered. It's receding now but not as much as you might expect. BTS previously got as high as #2 with "Dynamite" and this is comfortably the highest of any solo member on the singles chart. That's not the only action we've got in the top 10 either. Billie Eilish scores the first top 10 hit from the "Barbie" soundtrack, a list that I expect will grow next week, but I couldn't confidently say the order will remain given how much it's fluctuated this week. Billie Eilish is actually #2 on Spotify and Apple right now but was quite behind "Barbie World" and "Dance The Night" at the start of the week. Gunna scores his first ever solo top 10 and is getting oddly close to matching the peak of "Lemonade" which hit #5 back in 2020. Not quite included in this top 10 fold is Troye Sivan. "Rush" is now his 7th top 10 hit but the only time he ever made the top 10 was when his first ever entry "Happy Little Pill" had sales of his "Trxye" EP combined into it and it briefly shot up to #10. I'm sure the Aus music industry is glad to get a new hit with no tangible effort, I'm sure it's not an excuse to get complacent again, ha. Anyway now I will dedicate a portion of this write-up for all of the songs that had their chance at top 50 success hampered by all of Taylor Swift's album tracks last week:

Anyway Taylor Swift is #1 again on the album chart. Given that "Speak Now" is not exactly one of her most enduring albums on the average week, I have to wonder how long it'll spend high up on the chart after the streaming recedes. There are only two tracks from it left in the Spotify top 200. Anyway she gets another chance to stop more Australian artists from reaching the top. For the 3rd time in a row, Tina Arena is blocked by a massively popular international star (the last two were Elvis Presley & Ed Sheeran) and debuts at #2. She previously had two #2 albums in the '90s and it's also making me realise that basically everyone I've watched appear on RocKwiz recently has had an album to promote on the pipeline. I'm coloured impressed that Lauren Spencer-Smith has converted her occasional TikTok virality into a respectable album chart debut. 5 Seconds Of Summer debut with a live album that came out digitally 3 months ago. You might remember Voyager as that band that represented Australia in Eurovision (for possibly the last time?) this year. I'll say in truth I'd not heard of them before that, but they land their first chart entry this week. ARIA actually did tweet at the time after Eurovision that their entry "Promise" made the top 50 Australian artist singles chart, and it makes me wonder if it was the only Eurovision track that was actually added to the survey that week. Lil Tjay gets his 2nd top 50 album, a bit of a far cry from his first but I suppose that one had a big hit on it.

oh wow very accurate prediction for Troye :o

"Sprinter" is #1 for a 7th week. As noted last week, this makes it the longest reigning #1 hit that hasn't made the airplay chart (circa 2008-present is the data I have, but I'd be surprised if there were a bigger example prior to that anyhow). It might just be the last week at #1 however as the Barbie bump is fully in swing. Billie Eilish is up to #2 this week, with "What Was I Made For?" temporarily appearing to be her 2nd #2 hit, but might get upgraded to being her 2nd #1 hit. It's really hard to call based on the data I've seen. She's lagging behind the other two Barbie tracks on Apple, which both vault into the top 10, but also has a bigger bullet on Spotify presently so you'd have to favour the relatively incumbent right? Anyway it all makes the chart aesthetically pleasing because "vampire" has dropped 1 position every week and "Seven" is now #7. Also I'm seeing the movie tomorrow so don't spoil it, but honestly ARIA have been nice enough to not spoil it too because the one-week lag on new entries appears to have struck again, and no other Barbie songs from the album released this past week have made an appearance anywhere. That's apt for this coming week too, as Travis Scott debuts "K-POP", which you would think is set to be joined by a dozen or so more entries next week, but when "ASTROWORLD" debuted, only "SICKO MODE", "STARGAZING" and already released "BUTTERFLY EFFECT" made it on week one. The rest of the album had to wait an extra week for inclusion. Who knows what will happen this time? Speaking of K-Pop, NewJeans get a bunch of entries from their new EP which is too short to actually appear on the album chart. In fact it's so short that they may have made ARIA Chart history, with "Get Up" potentially being the shortest ever ARIA top 100 entry ever (I suspect it's moved enough units, but again, you never know if that counts here). Spotify marks it as 0:36 although I'd argue that it feels like it finishes at the 0:34 mark. In any case, it's at least a second shorter than Ariana Grande's "raindrops (an angel cried)" the current record holder. Pumping us up for Post Malone's new album, we've got Noah Kahan lucky to score his second top 50 hit. I feel like he's cribbing a bit from Kim Churchill's playbook on this one so I dunno, maybe you'll like him if you like that.

Perhaps a dawning of a new age. For the first time since Covid-19, we have a theatrically released film soundtrack at #1 on the charts. No but really keep wearing a mask for your sake and everyone else's. We're scant on Australians at #1 here so maybe we can choose to count this. Anyway if you recall a couple months ago, there was a documentary about John Farnham. I believe this week it aired on TV and the result was fairly substantial. I'm also being thoroughly gaslit because I can't exactly work out what "Greatest Hits" in particular is charting in the top 10. The artwork is very familiar to me and seems to date to a compilation from 2009 except that there was a Farnham compilation that charted in 2009 and it's not that. I'm guessing I used to see the artwork on the iTunes chart a lot. In any case though, it's also certified 5xPlatinum which I'm finding difficult to accept with how little chart history it seems to have. My only conclusion is that Sony is up to some shit as per usual. To note also among his re-entries is his 1986 album "Whispering Jack", the 3rd highest selling album of all time in this country, behind Meat Loaf & Shania Twain. Absolutely nothing is close to changing those standings as of yet. Blur score just their 3rd ever top 10 album. Their highest peak came with previous album "The Magic Whip", which did what this album couldn't do and outsold Taylor Swift's "1989", which was also in the top 10 at the time. Not to be confused with extremely '90s gaming mascots, Busby Marou score their 5th top 50 album, though with a bit of a comedown as they'd made the top 5 three times in a row with even a #1 album to boot. I simply assumed that Ian Moss's new album was a re-release because the title sounded familiar, but no, Mossy's got a new album, making the top 20 just like his self-titled did 5 years ago. The re-release we do get, and one I'm absolutely certain is from 2009, is Short Stack's debut album "Stack Is The New Black". Truly it wasn't just a phase. Next week I would expect Travis Scott to debut at the top, but then I could just as easily see it being Barbie or Post Malone, hard to call.

"What Was I Made For?" climbs to #1. This is Billie Eilish's second #1 hit following the #1 debut of "bad guy" back in 2019. We approach the Barbie singularity as now the soundtrack houses three of the top 4. That appears to be withering but then so are all the surrounding tracks so this could be our standard for a while. I guess though it's peculiar that "Dance The Night" got to #1 on iTunes and Apple recently but is lagging on Spotify, potentially it could leap ahead of the competition. Dua Lipa doesn't have a #1 single outside of that proto-AI Elton John garbage. Also of note with the Barbie stuff, I incorrectly posited that the other tracks on the album weren't being counted, but actually the solution is stranger. With credit to Rush for finding this out, due to the different track IDs on the singles & album, it would appear that those other tracks only arbitrarily got part of their data included. It appears as though Charli XCX has had this fixed but your dreams of Ryan Gosling scoring a top 50 hit have been rudely ripped away from you. Since it samples "Cobra Style", this is just the second time since her '90s teen pop era that Robyn has a writing credit on a top 50 hit. I probably don't need to tell you what the other one is. Travis Scott's data seems to be more accurately accounted and he has many debuts this week, once again the one with Drake on it is the highest, although "TELEKINESIS" and "K-POP" have been sticking the landing a little over time as well. Amidst all of this, "vampire" has dropped 1 place again for a 1-2-3-4-5 chart run in its first 5 weeks which I'm not certain has ever happened before.

Bubbling Under, Hooligan Hefs chose a bad week to have a pretty decent debut. I'm not sure he'd be in the top 50 without Travis Scott but it's possible. Peggy has very belatedly gotten the Hot Hits Australia co-sign so I'm expecting her to fully scare the hoes in the top 50 next week.

Travis Scott scores his second #1 album, Post Malone scores his second #2 album. Actually because of Travis Scott, Post Malone achieved a rare feat of actually lessening his top 50 entries on the album release week, as "Sunflower" got kicked out and he didn't have any top 50 debuts. But then I wonder about that because "Enough Is Enough" was #42 on Spotify for the week yet doesn't show on any supplementary chart. I guess they finally don't consider Post Malone to be hip-hop, but I guess we'll have to see next week if it was just missing or not.

"What Was I Made For" spends a 3rd week at #1. It will almost definitely be the last one because it must have been a close call this week and it's continue to severely plummet. The real question should be just how far down the song will fall because I could see quite a few songs overtaking it. Most pertinently would be "Paint The Town Red". That will quite comfortably be #1 next week as it's just zoomed past the competition in the past week. I suppose the only fresh competition comes from Olivia Rodrigo, who debuts at #10 which I suspect will be the song's peak unless her album buoys it significantly. With that in mind we've got a bit of a race for the top 10, where if Gunna doesn't hold up, then "Popular" might finally hit the top 10, having spent the last 6 weeks jumping around #11-#13. More to watch includes Zach Bryan who could sneak a new peak over a year into his chart run, and Luke Combs who almost certainly will get one, also more than a year into his chart run. Luke Combs is in the country at present and his catalogue is having a good showing for it. Both "Beautiful Crazy" and "When It Rains It Pours" have platinum certifications that surpass their combined tenures in the top 50, but this week they both return to new peaks. Fred again.. has a new entry, and unlike the OCC, ARIA have managed to spell the title correctly and credit Obongjayar.

An interesting thing on last week's Bubbling Under chart that I can still note this week is the return of "Life Goes On", which is lucky to get this showing because it's very soon to be ineligible for said chart. If all things Luke Combs continue to climb next week, it might be able to sneak back into the top 50. Hooligan Hefs on the other hand is headed in the wrong direction. To my recollection we've had just 4 new Australian top 50 singles this year.

On the bright side, we do have an Australian #1 album this week. It comes from G Flip via their second album. Their first album only reached #6 (perhaps releasing on the same week as Tool, Lana Del Rey & Tones and I, and a week after Taylor Swift wasn't the best idea) but had fairly strong longevity. To my knowledge, they're the 3rd non-binary artist to reach #1, following Tash Sultana & Sam Smith. The next highest debut this week is also Australian, more or less. You might not know the name of Michael Gudinski but as the founder of Mushroom Records, he was one of the most important people in this country's music industry. I could note a bunch of names but maybe a key one is that he originally signed Kylie Minogue. He passed away unexpectedly in 2021, and you might recall that Ed Sheeran wrote the song "Visiting Hours" about him. This chart debut relates to a documentary about him which premiered earlier this month but isn't in wide cinema release until next week. I don't know enough about the documentary to know why the name "Ego" was chosen, but he also signed Skyhooks, a hugely successful band from the mid '70s to early '90s who made the song "Ego (Is Not A Dirty World)" so there's probably something in that. Jungle score their 4th top 50 album. The album cover looks weirdly familiar to me but maybe it just looks like Death Cab's "The Photo Album", I don't know. If not for Luke Combs' tour, it would be possible that the entire top 10 were #1 peaking albums, which is interesting and I don't know if it's ever happened before.

I have to share with everyone that "Bruises" by Lewis Capaldi has been covered on The Voice last night, for the 4th year in a row.

"Paint The Town Red" climbs to #1, making it Doja Cat's first ever #1 hit. I expect this to change but with this, "What Was I Made For?" & "Sprinter", it makes 3 #1 hits on the trot that Australian radio hasn't really gotten behind. In any case, it's an easy lead ahead of what would otherwise be a very close race. In a surprising twist of events, Luke Combs has the right sales/stream combination to sneak up to a new peak of #2 with "Fast Car", a climb that really isn't represented by its #9->#8 climb on Spotify for the week. As was noted last week, Billie Eilish does drop quite a bit, to #7 even! Very uncharacteristic of a multi-week #1 that didn't debut there. Back in 2015, Delta Goodrem climbed to #1 with "Wings", spent a second week there, and then dropped to #9 the week after. Also promised last week, Zach Bryan got a new peak, inching ever so close to the top 10. He's certainly closing the gap with Nicki & Gunna, however The Weeknd has thrown a spanner into the works by announcing an Australian tour where he'll be visiting all 3 of our state capitals. This was announced late in the chart week and has caused a spike for everything with his name on it, so "Popular" should finally make the top 10 next week. The most exciting thing for me was seeing "House Of Balloons / Glass Table Girls" enter the Spotify top 200 for the first time ever. I am one of those people who was obsessed with The Weeknd back in 2011 and that's one of my favourite songs ever. If you live in Australia, the word Richmond refers to a suburb of Melbourne. It's not exactly obscure either, they have a moderately successful AFL team, even if their more recent claim to fame is being the team that can't help but finish in 9th, 1 spot short of the finals. This year they landed in 13th with a fairly respectable W/L record all things considered, but suffice to say, I did for a little while think that the iTunes chart was being dominated by a random Victorian singer. Last month I also committed myself to memorising all the US state capitals, which I think I've pretty much gotten down now, so I could have seen this coming. Anyway this is all a lot of pre-amble to say that Oliver Anthony has made the top 20 here. I actually thought he was missing from last week's chart as I expected him in the top 50 but apparently he was down in the 60s. His chart trajectory is showing some shaky ground although I do expect him to climb next week. Perhaps surprisingly Miley Cyrus has already unseated him on the iTunes chart, although "Flowers" is almost certainly the best selling digital track this year so it follows. By the way, Miley Cyrus is tracking for a reasonable debut (top 20?), as is often the case, despite declines around the world, she's climbed every day on Spotify so far.

Of note below the top 50 we have the arrival of "Prada", which should make the top 50 next week. Not only did "Ferrari Horses" not chart here, but this is the first time for D-Block Europe period.

In a pretty busy week for new Australian albums, the "Barbie" soundtrack returns to #1. I also have to wonder if "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" is soon to get hit by reality as its sales can only hold up its diminished streams (compared to the nearby competition!) for so long, it just feels strange that it's #2 this week. Otherwise we can play speculation over The Weeknd's "The Highlights" which seems to want to make itself a #1 contender again. I think Zach Bryan and NCT could have something to say about that next week but dang imagine if he just announced the tour a week earlier. The top debut this week actually comes from Genesis Owusu. He's one of those Australian artists that are cool to like because international music people write about him. But yes he's good and he won the ARIA Award for Album of the Year for his previous album. This one has made certain strides to give him his first top 10. Next is Hozier, a two time top 10 artist, who cannot quite muster the same interest in his catalogue as "Take Me To Church" which is a Spotify chart perennial to this day. Also previously making the top 10 twice is Dan Sultan, who'd been at it for quite a while before getting a real commercial boon. He's good too, listen to him. Just behind him is Gretta Ray with her second album. I've been an outspoken fan of her music for a long time, and finally got to see her live last year and had a great time. I haven't been able to drum up the same enthusiasm for her new music this year for some reason, but it's gotten her a new chart peak so good for her. Before we get to the main course, we've got an entry from the NCT sub-division Dream, charting for the first time. For once I think this random jarble of letters in the album title IS a Myers-Briggs personality. Then we're still going and we've got a very old EP from Australian metal-core stalwarts Parkway Drive, charting for the first time. Lastly we've got Reneé Rapp charting for the first time. I'm too old to be across her filmography but I thought "Too Well" was pretty good last year.

Oh and I feel like I should mention for posterity that when ARIA first published this chart, "Daylight" was just completely gone. They fixed it up a couple of hours later but this was the first time in many years I'd seen ARIA change a chart after publishing. I suppose credit must be given for not just locking it in and moving on.

"Paint The Town Red" is #1 for a 3rd week. It's not remotely close and nothing looks like challenging it so strap in. Zach Bryan scores a new career high with "I Remember Everything" moving up to #11. He may not be out of the count for either of his hits hitting the top 10 in the future but Olivia Rodrigo's album is going to put that on hold for now at least. The only other song making serious moves right now is "Prada" although that's also starting to slow down its ascent, so it'll need second wind. We've got two debuts this week, firstly a first time appearance for Kenya Grace, while Kylie Minogue scores a second top 50 hit this year. For those of you keeping track, this is now the 5th Australian song to reach the ARIA top 50 this year. All 5 of these have charted in the UK so we truly are a very individual country.

These two debuts help actually clear out the Bubbling Under section for I think the first time since I started writing it up here. In fact we have 21 'new' songs in the top 50 this week. That'll get a shot in the arm next week because Olivia Rodrigo can only add one more song from her album to it but will probably push about 4 of these songs out in the process.

On the album chart we've another Australian #1! Sydney metalcore band Polaris score their first ever chart topper with their 3rd album. It comes at a troubling time for the band as guitarist Ryan Siew passed away a few months ago during the lead up to this album. If you think that might be why they hit #1, it's worth noting that they've been on an upward trajectory with every release, and had a #3 debut with their last album. The Weeknd will have to maybe hope he can catch an easy week during or after his Australian tour, but given that's near the end of the year you'd have to think there's a major album that'll be doing numbers around then. Incredibly, Slowdive score their first ever top 50 album this week. Royal Blood also return but at a far cry from the top 5 peaks of their first 3 albums.

Zach Bryan being both #11 and #12 without yet having a top 10 hit to his name oof. Hopefully one or both will still get there in the future though.

"Paint The Town Red" is #1 for a 4th week. I once again note that there is nothing remotely close and you'd have to think her album coming out soon will only aid that. On the other hand, we are getting some fresh hits moving on up. As I write this, Kenya Grace & Tate McRae are both in the top 5 on Spotify. Drake also got up to #2 this week and probably has a top 10 debut in sight despite the slow start. casso could hit the top 10 too, and Zach Bryan is still moving up though maybe not fast enough to do the same yet, a real changing of the guard moment. As for this week's chart, Olivia Rodrigo shoved the guard aside for a moment as she does. Back in 2021 she didn't debut her entire album because for some reason "favorite crime" took a few weeks to be included. Not the case this week, however just like with the release of "SOUR", Olivia is unable to shift "Someone You Loved" out of the top 50, which continues to not actually extend its lead as the longest charting top 50 hit ("Heat Waves" is #2 on that list) but is making that number bigger and closing in on the 3 year mark (152 this week). With only 5 tracks still in the top 50 on Spotify at the moment, it doesn't look like the longevity will come through quite as much this time.

Olivia's influx does however give us a Bubbling Under chart again. V's big sales weren't quite enough to get into the top 50.

"The Highlights" misses out again under fairly understandable circumstances. It's probably getting closer to the Taylor Swift pack though so it won't really be able to contend again until the tour actually starts. It serves as an interesting time for me to note something I discovered about the album chart recently. According to ARIA's own code of practice, the way streaming allocation actually works is that they can and do get appended to multiple albums, but the default rule is that they will go to only the first and last albums which include the track. This explains my Post Malone confusion earlier this year, where only "Hollywood's Bleeding" seemed to suffer from the arrival of "The Diamond Collection". This is no doubt because "Into The Spider-Verse"'s soundtrack came out first, so "Hollywood's Bleeding" is the unlucky middle child of the 3 albums that "Sunflower" is now on. No doubt the Michael Gudinski album will suffer if Ed Sheeran or Vance Joy ever put "The A Team" or "Riptide" onto another album. Evidently though they play a little loose with this rule because Creedence Clearwater Revival's compilation does not satisfy these rules. Nevertheless, that's why "Starboy" manages to chart so high alongside "The Highlights". Anyway Olivia Rodrigo has a 2nd #1 album as you might have guessed. She has the only debuts across both charts this week which must be particularly rare. We do have some re-entries as Grinspoon put out their 2nd and 3rd albums on vinyl. For Australians, these are the albums that have "Ready 1" and "Chemical Heart" on them respectively. For non-Australians I will just highlight that Grinspoon have an amazing even palindromic chart history with their 7 album peaks. In order they go #8, #4, #2, #4, #2, #4, #8. The first four of these are platinum selling.

I was gonna ask about Starboy but the weird chart rules explain it then

"Paint The Town Red" is #1 for a 5th week. In a shocking twist, it's actually getting less streams this coming week than last week. It's also miles ahead of the competition still, but the cracks are showing I guess. Poised for this is possibly Kenya Grace who has vaulted into the top 10 this week. Not to go unmentioned also is Tate McRae, who instantly scores her highest ever chart position. Not to be confused with Craig McRae who in the world of Australian sportsball is coaching Collingwood to potentially score their record-tying 16th AFL Grand Final win, where he's up against the Brisbane Lions who he himself played for 20 years ago when they annihilated Collingwood in the 2003 Grand Final. We all pray that happens again. RAYE scores her 2nd top 10 hit which is also a first for casso & D-Block Europe. Drake's slow start means that he misses out on a top 10 berth with "Slime You Out" which might not last more than three weeks in the top 50 at this rate. SZA's fortunes are better for "Snooze" which scores a big new peak of #21, SZA costing herself a top 20 peak. In case you were wondering about the race to be the biggest hit of the decade, then you should know that "Heat Waves" is winning that by a lot presently, and has this week at least temporarily overtaken its nearest competition, "As It Was". One has to wonder if a song released after 2023 even has a chance to contend in this race, "Last Night" might be the last song with any chance. Also here's a fun fact, "Mr. Brightside" has the record for the most top 50 re-entries of all time. It already had that before it re-entered this week, but now Mariah Carey won't even match it in December, and in all honestly, will probably just contribute to adding another one to The Killers' tally in 2024. "Mr. Brightside" will also probably become the 7th song to make 100 weeks in the top 50 in two weeks (or 6th if you don't count Fleetwood Mac's pre-ARIA weeks), although "Cold Heart" is just sitting on the cusp of the chart with 99 weeks in so you never know.

Olivia Rodrigo scores a second week at #1. For comparison, "SOUR" managed 8 weeks at #1 so she's got some work to do there. In case you're wondering, this is the 8th week at #2 for "The Highlights". Enough people have made it past the 'I'm okay with listening to an artist named Teddy Swims' door to get Teddy Swims his first ever top 50 appearance, with a #4 debut at that. Similarly, enough people have made it past the 'I'm okay with listening to music made by Jared Leto in current year' door to give Thirty Seconds To Mars their 3rd ever top 10 album. Their more popular albums are actually the ones that didn't reach the top 10. Mitski only charted for the first time last year. She's fallen a little short of that benchmark this time with her latest album missing the top 10 but on the other hand she's made the Spotify chart for the first time ever in this past week, I await to see if ARIA are actually counting "My Love Mine All Mine". Sleepy Hallow converts a pretty consistent run of streaming hits to land a top 40 album debut. Australian group C.O.F.F.I.N. are not actually from Coffin Bay, or even South Australia. Actually the name stands for Children Of Finland, Fighting In Norway, the more you know. This is their first ever chart appearance anyway.
