OK I may have already posted these in a "monthly" format which wasn't that popular, and I'm still way behind on 1992 charts (that will be ongoing as I get the time, but I still have to digitise those). These are already on spreadsheets so I can quite easily keep up with these week on week (I hope!) up to the end of 1993. 1994 is already done on here in the weekly format and three quarters of 1995, so I might just go straight to 1995 once 1992 is done, then 1996 and 1997 and that's the 90's completely spreadsheeted.

So, for your "30 Years Ago" bemusement, no commentary to make it easier for me...first chart up no Last Week info as I haven't done 1992 yet etc.

3rd January 1993, I was 35 years old today...

It's a 3rd week on top for ABBA's CD festive trio as Boy George grabs a 4th Jesus Loves You top 10 with Sweet Toxic Love at 6. The Farm get a second top 10 to join All Together Now from 1990, and Lisa Stansfield makes it 5 years in a row of top 10's. Lulu dropped a preview of Independence in late 1992, which snook into my chart, but now gets a proper release and is in at 16, to extend her chart run to 25 years, I'm A Tiger first did in my 1968 charts as a ten-year-old.

Sister Sledge remixes are never far away from any dance scene - that includes 2025's as I type, and We Are Family in 1993. New at 20. Life Of Surprises is back for Prefab Sprout, 8 years and counting, and Bobby Brown makes it a cool decade since New Edition debuted, and that's Good Enough for me. Both decent tracks. Cher, ever unpredictable, drops a live version of Jimmy Cliff's gospel great Many Rivers To Cross, for a 22nd year run of chart hits for me since Gypsies Tramps & Thieves, and West End recruit Sybil for a big beat cover of Harold Melvin's The Love I Lost. Not as good as the original though.

Apache Indian brings some Bhangra vibes to the chart, love the beats, Go West return with one I've forgotten 8 years on from We Close Our Eyes, and Sunscreem have a dance track at 75 I've also forgotten. Broken English. Not Marianne Faithful, I'm guessing.

Paul McCartney bags his first number one since 1989, Hope Of Deliverance giving him 4 decades in a row of chart-toppers, starting with The Beatles' Hey Jude in 1968 in my first official personal chart. In terms of solo number ones, though, it's his 3rd, 22 years on from Another Day. We Are Family returns to the top 10 in remix form, 14 years on for Sister Sledge, Lulu gets her first top 10 with a new song since 1975 when The Man With The Golden Gun did it, and both Take That and The Prodigy grab their first top 10's, though Could It Be Magic already did that in 1979 for Barry Manilow.

Biggest climber is West End and Sybil, on the old Harold Melvin hit, and highest new entry is the welcome return of Neil Young in gentle acoustic mood 22 years on from Harvest and Heart Of Gold, and the brilliant Harvest Moon new at 35. The fabulous Moodswings cover of Jon & Vangelis' State Of Independence, a 1982 hot for Donna Summer, draft in Chrissie Hynde and enter at 42 entitled Spiritual High. Faith No More cover The Commodores without managing to improve on the original, En Vogue sneak in with one I've forgotten, Bon Jovi keep on rocking with Bed Of Roses, not one of their great tracks, East 17 keep the hits running on Deep, and The The make it 8 years of minor success with Dogs Of Lust.

Deeper and Deeper is a great track, I hope ABBA didn't hold it off #1 completely and it made it in 1992?

I'm not a huge fan of Paul McCartney on his own but Hope of Deliverance was actually quite good, it's the only one of his I've ever bought.

Thanks dandy*, I'm surprised you bought Hope Of deliverance actually, but it was his last chart-topper for me, he's been good since then but not quite what he was back in the day. Madonna topped the chart in 1992 (I will get round to it, still working on it! :D ) The other one I wouldnt have put money on you liking was Boney M  Maybe Deacon Blue is mild surprise too, but a pleasant one, it's far and away my fave record of theirs. :)

Lulu gets her first number one since the revived Shout in 1986, and only her second one in 25 years of charting from me, with the great Independence. I bought the album, and it was easily her best album outside Hits collections. I think at the time she held the record for most hits on most record labels. Probably still does! The Beloved drop an instant fave for me, the delicious and sultry Sweet Harmony new at 2, their biggest hit to date. The Love I Lost goes where Harold Melvin fell short: top 10 for Sybil and West End. The Cult are back and remixed with She Sells Sanctuary to go top 5 for the second time: 8 years on it's still their greatest recprd.

In a chart busy week, Saint Etienne return with Telstar, oops sorry I mean, You're In A Bad Way, a total gem at 13, and Moodswings and Chrissie bring State Of Independence back into the top 20 over a decade on from Donna Summer first covering it. East 17 get a massive climb into the the 20 with Deep. Belly debut with Feed The Tree, Mick Jagger has another of his rare solo hits, Sweet Thing is quite decent and has had charted for 8 years (solo) or 24 years (with the Stones).

There's a modest new entry as Duran Duran return with a career-high to date to join Wild Boys and The Reflex as classic singles for me, but it's very untypically low-key, so how will it do in my charts? Ordinary World slides in at 74.

31st January 1993

It's another new chart-topper as The Beloved take their gorgeous Sweet Harmony to the top spot, very much their best record and holding off a revived classic from Ultravox - Vienna peaked at 2 in my charts too, as well as the UK's, and blow me if it doesn't enter at...2!! Midge Ure did originally top my chart that January of 1981, though, on his Fade To Grey as released by Visage. Moodswings' cover of State Of Independence pretty much equals Donna Summer's version as it goes top 5 13 years on from Chrissie Hynde first doing that with Brass In Pocket. Saint Etienne's fabulous Telstar tribute, You're In A Bad Way, gives them a second top 10, and East 17 also do that as Deep is up to 8. Peter Gabriel gets his first new top 10 since Sledgehammer in 1986.

The soulful Martine Girault never did get a hit with Revival, sadly, but enters at 16 for me, quite rightly. Poison manage something I didn't think they'd done: made my top 40, with Stand at 30. It must be better than I think it was. At 33, and future biggie, what a bop, it's No No, No Nonono, there's No Limits as 2 Unlimited return and hit the big time. Techno, techno, techno! Hothouse Flowers keep the run of entries coming, having An Emotional Time at 36. Sugar debut, and I have no memory of If I Can't Change Your Mind or them.

At 44, debuting, it's D:Ream with Professor Brian Cox on keyboards, future TV science-populariser. Things Can Only Get Better, and a future chart-topper and Labour Party anthem. Such optimism deserves to be rewarded, even if it isn't true as a statement at least half the time. Meanwhile Annie Lennox has another big hit with the double-sided film song Love Song For A Vampire, and the chirpier Little Bird. In at 61 and at 63 M People sing How Can I Love You More as they move into their big-hitting period, and at 65 Deacon Blue pop in with Will We Be Lovers. Probably not.

Fleetwood Mac's line-up was once again fluid, but manage to get noticed at 66 with Love Shines, Freddie Mercury's back catalogue gets plundered posthumously with the OTT The Great Pretender back again 6 years on when I wasnt that bothered about it first time round. Tasmin Archer has a follow-up minor hit with In Your Care, and Cathy Dennis is in ballad mode and a third year of charting.

It's 2 weeks on top for The Beloved's fab Sweet Harmony as Vienna seems fated to always be a number 2, but another classic oldie gets remixed for the Carpenters - Rainy Days & Mondays was never a UK hit, so a belated chart entry is very welcome, even though I put it in my 1971 charts, so it's a second top 10 run here at 6. D:Ream rocket to 9, Things really can only get better for Prof. Cox as he leapfrogs Mick Jagger's Sweet Thing, only his second solo top 10, but way better than any Rolling Stones record in a decade.

Annie Lennox is the big climb into the top 20 with her double A and Rolf Harris pops back in as it officially charts, Rolf on his Stairway To Heaven for a final chart appearance after 20 years or so. Can you tell what it is yet? Gary Clark joins the solo career club, Danny Wilson the band RIP, but does well to out-enter the rather good INXS on Beautiful Girl at 31. It's a great track and Michael Hutchence was one of the great frontmen on the live circuit. There's a bit of Glam nostalgia for me with The Rubettes getting a first chart appearance in 16 years with a megamix, always under-rated they were, especially when they started writing their own stuff. As session musicians they could crop up anywhere in the early 70's, not least on the River Thames backing Peter Noone in 1973 on The Midnight Special. It's on Youtube...

Give In To Me enters at a lowly 38, considering I bought the album, a good dance track from Gloworm at 43 on I Lift My Cup, while Oui 3 update hippie Buffalo Springfield classic For What It's Worth. Never a UK hit, sadly, though band members had success in their later career (see Crosby Stills Nash & Young, and solo stuff), but it works dance-stylee too. Sophie B. follows up, Rod also goes the 60's cover route, and manages not to ruin Ruby Tuesday, though Melanie & the original Rolling Stones versions are much better. Sting is back with a relatively uplifting tune, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, which makes a nice change.

Extreme, Undercover, and Def Leppard all keep their run of hits going with singles I've largely forgotten and not heard in 30 years, and Tom Jones has another of his regular comebacks with a charity record - All You Need Is Love is a Beatles number one classic Summer Of Love song, but Tom's version doesn't really suit him or the song, on balance. It's for a good cause though. Whitney is also on the covers front, this time Chaka Khan's disco classic I'm Every Woman, and she doesn't ruin it, so that's a plus, and of her better tracks of the era.

It's a 3rd week on top for The Beloved as Saint Etienne climb to 3 with the fab You're In A Bad Way, but 2 Unlimted leap up to 4 with the UK chart-topper No Limits. No no, no nonono, there's no limits! Duran Duran get their biggest record in my charts since Skin Trade as they go top 10 with Ordinary World, that'll be their 9th at least, and it's very much a career-reviver. Annie Lennox meanwhile grabs a 3rd solo top 10.

Highest new entry is PM Dawn, Looking Through Patient Eyes keeping up the non-stop Daisy-Age mellow rap hits at 22 while Charles And Eddie follow-up their biggie with NYC at 23. Shaggy arrives! Oh Carolina is a toastalicious reggae romp at 36, and who knew he'd eventually do an album with the man up to 20 - Sting! Thunder are at 37, still benefitting from their live performance that I caught - but they were never as good on record as in a concert hall.

Vanessa Paradis is also back with Sunday Mondays, John Waite re-charts with his 1984 smash Missing You, and Leo Sayer a more modest slot for his 19977 UK chart-topper, When I Kneed You. Stereo MC's are now into the post-top-tunes phase with Ground Level, REM rae still jangling the hits out with Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight. It's a rattlesnake. Tasmin Archer is yet another one following up a chart-topper with In Your Care, while Take That have yet to get that far with their Why Can't I Wake Up With You ballad.

The Christians opt for a 70's classic soul cover of Gil Scott-Heron's The Bottle, and a great job they made of it too. Shame it wasnt a big hit! Jon Secada is trying for an Angel, and Shakespear's Sister are on their 16th Apology. No need apologise gals, just promise me you aren't going to do something silly like fall out and go for lesser solo careers? No? Oh dear...

2 Unlimited climb to the top spot, no no, no, nonono and so on, It's still catchy and was on Radio 2 this morning. kd Lang is in at 4 reactivated and finally a proper UK hit with the brilliant Constant Craving. Michael Jackson climbs to 8 as Give In To Me adds to what is a fabulous top 8, as veteran Neil Young gets his first-ever top 10 in my charts on his most accessible single, the lovely Harvest Moon at 8. Rod Stewart is still grabbing top 10's 22 years on, his cover of The Rolling Stones' Ruby Tuesday doing what Melanie did in 1970. It's not as good as Melanie's cover, or the original though, but it's among his better cover versions of many bunged out when he wasn't bothering to write his own.

Madness are still reactivating 80's classics, this time it's former number one from 1980, the manic Night Boat To Cairo, one of my most-fave Nutty Boy romps back in at 14. Madonna is dropping album tracks as singles still, ballad Bad Girl not being amongst her most-memorable, in at 30, but Lenny Kravitz drops his greatest rock-track, the rifftastic Are You Gonna Go My Way at 32. Macca follows-up his chart-topper with C'mon People, Dee Fredrix' forgotten goodie And So I Will Wait For You, just behind, and Genesis enter at 49 with a track so forgettable Ive already forgotten the title and I only looked 10 seconds ago.

Depeche Mode are dark and brooding, I Feel You at 60 12 years on and counting, Right Said Fred manage to keep those novelties coming with the annoying Stick It Out, T'Pau have a Valentine day newie, Carol Decker still banging out the voice in the 2020's, and the B52's have a Hot Pants Explosion at 75. I have no memory of this record but I love the title, sounds fun.

k.d. Lang finally gets that deserved chart-topper with Constant Craving, second-time around, as Duran Duran belatedly get to the runners-up spot and their biggest record since Wild Boys in 1984. Lenny Kravitz gets a first top 10 with Shaggy poised at 11, too. In the USA BoyzIIMen have a 50's cover out, and it's actually better than any more ballads they will bung out from hereon. It enters at 25, In The Still Of The Night originally hit for The Five Satins in 1956. Just behind them, Bobby Womack gives Lulu an unlikely soulful lift on their duet I'm Back For More at 29, and rather good it is too as Lulu finally gets control of the sort of music she always wanted to make as she extends her chart run to 25 years here.

Hot Chocolate's sweet 1982 chart-topper is back, It Started With A Kiss new at 35, keeping Errol Brown & co popular into the 90's, via compilation hits albums. Fairground Attraction return even sooner, a mere 5 years later with Perfect at 41, while Dina Carroll and Inner Circle extend their recent runs with singles I barely recall. Ugly Kid Joe right a wrong as the late Harry Chapin's magnificent Cats In The Cradle finally becomes a UK hit. Just a shame their version is rubbish in comparison, Harry should have got that in 1974. Talking of oldies, a remixed Sister Sledge can never be discounted, Lost In Music back for at least a 3rd time, having gone top 10 in 1979 and number one in 1984, while Heaven 17 get a second go with We Don't Need This Fascist Groove Thing. Needs to become an anthem for the USA here in February 2025.

It's Duran Duran on top, Ordinary World giving them a second number one 9 years on from Wild Boys doing the trick, and holding off Shaggy's reggae-fest Oh Carolina at 2. PM Dawn grab another top 10 Looking Through Patient Eyes and Hot Chocolate bring It Started With A Kiss back into the top 10 11 years since it got to the top spot. Marxman enters at 12 with All About Eve, and I have to confess I dont recall it, and havent heard this dance track in 32 years. Turns out it's a laid-back rap House track, pleasant enough.

Elsewhere Bananarama return with a cover of the Andrea True Connection number one from 1976, More More More at 25 to extend their chart run to 12 years. Runrig have a Wonderful entry at 30, and Maxi Priest fancies One More Chance at 45, his laid-back reggae vibes always welcome in my charts. Suede have some Animal Nitrate at 58. I suppose they might have called it Amyl Nightrate, for shift workers. Which Leaves Bizarre Inc following up and Prince scraping a new entry with the very dull Morning Papers. Some might say that's appropriate for the title.

It's Shaggy taking Oh Carolina to the top spot, for me still his best record, the old-stylee reggae beats updated for the 90's and spearheading the new reggae revival, not least 2 new entries this week from Shabba Ranks at 8 with Mr Loverman, and arguably Snow with Informer lower down new in at 49. Lulu gets a second top 10 in a row for the first time since 1974, aided by Bobby Womack, and Arrested Development drop Tennessee new in at 14.

Jamiroquai are starting up a decade of charting with Too Young To Die, jazz vibes back and freshened up, Monie Love is Born To B.R.E.E.D, Hue & Cry remix their big 80's hit, Iron Maiden enter with a live record that must have sounded less formulaic than their usual, and Jade, as opposed to current pop star JADE, bring the best new track in at a lowly 74, but Don't Walk Away is a soul gem - or Jill Swing as it would have been labelled at the time I guess. New labels are just new names for old genres though, helpful for promoting to a new audience, and compartmentalising one slightly-different genre into endless fragments for record stores. Not so much for those that are left though, as these days there's not enough physical product to allow that.

21st March 1993

It's straight in at 1 for 1984 top 10 pop gem Young At Heart, following an advert feature, giving The Bluebells a much-deserved belated UK number one, and a personal chart-topper too, co-written by Bobbie Bluebell and Bananarama's 3 members, the only time Sarah and Keren wrote a number one hit (or indeed had one in the UK, though Siobhan had just come off Stay with Shakespear's Sister and the Nana's minus Siobhan had just had a number one in my charts in 1991). Soaring record. Produced by Barry Blue, dontcha know, he of 1970's hit records and songs and productions. Neil Young meanwhile reaches a new peak of 2 with the lovely wistful Harvest Moon and PM Dawn get a 2nd top 5 with Looking Through Patient Eyes.

Annie Lennox grabs another top 10 solo to add to her mighty list of Tourist and Eurythmics totals, and The Christians are on at least 5 top 10's with their cover of The Bottle. Sister Sledge meanwhile go top 10 for the third time with the Chic-tastic Lost In Music, 1979, 1984 and 1993. Chris Isaak gets another big entry at 12 with Can't Do A Thing To Stop Me. Saw him supporting Billy Joel last summer at Cardiff, most of the crowd knew Wicked Game but not a lot else, it seemed. Madonna covers Peggy Lee's Fever, it's OK but I'll stick with Peggy, a song from my childhood that everyone seemed to know. David Bowie meanwhile goes off in a new genre direction with Jump They Say at 47. An improvement on Tin Machine, but not quite up there with 70's/early 80's Bowie.

Jesus Jones make the Right Decision as they are in year 4 of charting for me, East 17 drop a track I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure it's not the monster Benson Boone song of the same name. Ice Cube enters with his greatest record, It Was A Good Day still resonates, and yay, unlike some modern rap you can hear every word, it has something to say, and it's in English, not stuffed with expletives, cliches and references and words I have no idea about. Sybil's good and ready, a bit of a pumping dance anthem of that year, Big Country are still extending the chart career to a decade (14 years including The Skids hits), and Michael Bolton decides to destroy a Four Tops classic. Reach Out I'll Be There can be covered fabulously, see Gloria Gaynor's minor disco-anthem, but generally unless you have some convincing reason to completely change the genre (and even then, most of the time) it's best steered-away from. No-one can touch Levi Stubbs, though Foghorn Bolton was persuaded it was worth a shot.

That leaves Gary Clark, 80's popster back solo, Free Floating, and Apache Indian bringing some welcome Bhangra-ish sounds to the charts with Chock There, a big hit happily.

28th March 1993

Its 2 weeks in top for The Bluebells, as they hold off The Christians fabulous cover of The Bottle at 2 - their highest-charting single in my charts, but sadly not the UK charts - and Lulu and Bobby Womack at a soulful 3, I'm Back For More, giving Lulu 2 back-to-back top 3's for the first time since 1968/9. Michael Jackson meanwhile drops another single from his album, the gospel-tinged Will You Be There which enters in at 4 - will it break the number 2 peaks of previous tracks off Dangerous? Chris Isaak makes it a 3rd top 10, and Jade shoot up to 9 with the fab Don't Walk Away.

Shinehead covers Sting reggae-style, an opts for Jamaica not England - appropriate enough since Sting started with reggae-fused rock, had some 90's reggae hits, and in recent years has been doing a lot of stuff with Shaggy, including this very week as I type in March 2025. Barry Manilow finally gets Copacabana to be a hit, all it took was 15 years and a remix, but it deserved to do it first time round. It's not as good. Mica Paris is back with a decent track, World Party enter the good Is It Like Today, Robin S bounds in with future club classic Show Me Love, much covered and sampled, and World's Apart do a boyband cover of Tavares. It's not as good.

Heaven 17 bring an oldie 80's flop back, Van Halen resort to a live cover of their best record, Jump. It's not as good. Duran Duran quietly sneak with the follow-up to chart-topping Ordinary World, and Come Undone if anything is even better, a classic record of this year. Rod is back doing covers again, this time 60's and 70's hit Northern Soul classic, Shotgun Wedding. It's not as good. Connie Francis' ancient hit Lipstick On Your Collar gives her a first chart hit, it seemed very old at the time, but a mere 35 years really. The equivalent of Kylie's Better The Devil You Know being a hit in 2025!

Gloria Estefan is back in playful Cuban dance mode, Go Away is a fun track, Aerosmith are Living On The Edge continuing the run of hits, and a good one, Cliff has Peace In Our Time on his mind. If only, eh, Cliff, but if there's one guarantee in life, it's how much human beings love killing each other. Just can't get enough of it. Get angry. Tyrant ramps it up. Start killing. Great for diverting attention from the real evil people. Other tracks, minor folloe-ups from Midnight Oil, Sunscreen, Go West and The Beloved.

For a bit fo fun which acts have I seen live from this chart? The Christians (well, Garry at any rate), Lulu, Michael Jackson, Chris Isaak, Annie Lennox (twice with Eurythmics), Duran Duran twice, ABBA (if we count ABBATARS, and I do), David Bowie (twice), Bananarama (3 times in all versions), Sting (with The Police), Madness, Madonna (3 times), Depeche Mode, Ultravox, Hot Chocolate, Heaven 17, Robbie Williams of Take That (twice), half The Beatles (Paul & Ringo), Cliff Richard, Marc Almond, Gloria Esrefan and half of Go West, Peter Cox.

4th April 1993

I went to see The Christians last night 21st April 2023, Garry Christian still in fine voice and with a great backing band and vocal accompaniment - they did a perfect acapella track. And did pretty much all of the hits - except The Bottle, which admittedly wasn't a hit. It was great to be re-acquainted with a back catalogue I've not checked out for a long time, notably Forgotten Town and Words (not the Bee Gees song). It was in quaint town Wimborne, Dorset's Tivoli Theatre, and which still has a record shop Square Records (although moved now). Later in the 90's I heard it was run by a chap in The Lemon Trees band (see number 75 for a flop, but fabulous single Child Of Love). Robbie Williams co-writer Guy Chambers created The Lemon Trees after leaving World Party (see number 10). I'm seeing Lulu at the Tivoli later in the year (see number 2). Life is sometimes nicely circular and linked....

In chart news, The Bluebells 1984 goodie remains on top, and Bazza Manilow finally gets a second top 10 in my charts with the revamped Copacabana out-peaking his previous Could It Be Magic in 1979 - that was also an oldie. Shinehead follows Sting's original in to the top, and World Party leap up to 10 with Is It Like Today, they also get a second belated top 10, as Gloria Estefan almost adds to her tally at 13.

Capella dance in at 26, U Got To Know is pretty decent, and Celine Dion ballads in at 40, practising before the 90's onslaught of massive tunes. Betty Boo has a hangover, well she was young. Terence Trent is still managing minor hits, Ariel let it slide, and The Lemon Trees debut their best record Child Of Love. The band contained one member who ran the record shop in Wimborne, and one who would go on to co-write & produce Robbie William's Imperial Phase. Guy Chambers.

11th April 1993

It's a second number one for Lulu in 1993 and a first for Bobby Womack, with Lulu also having topped the chart with the reactivated Shout in 1986 making it a third in total for Lulu, ironically more than she did in the 60's and 70's, though she came close. Duran Duran meanwhile romp up to 3 with Come Undone as they also try for a second chart-topper in a row. Both having quality career revivals, as Mica Paris gets a first top 10, and Spirit Of The Forest get a special UNESCO environmental-aware track into my record rack and chart at 35.

Sweden's Ace Of Base debut with their UK chart-topper All That She Wants, kick-starting a 7-year run of great pop singles, and also fitting in with the reggae vibes of 1993, in at 41. The are a plethora of multi-artist covers of Gimme Shelter out around this time as singles, and my top pick pops in at 46 for Jimmy Somerville & Voice Of The Beehive. I must play it again, it sounds intriguing! Meanwhile the actual hit single version pops in at 75 for Tom Jones and New Model Army, another "wouldn't have called that one as a duet!" moment as Tom knocks off his 28th year of single chart hits, and there's bigger to come down the line.

Everything But The Girl do a nice cover of Simon & Garfunkel's The Only Living Boy In New York, a classic track from a classic album - if only they'd dropped the Everly's cover for another S&G Paul Simon track the album would have been perfection throughout. Still, Bridge Over Troubled Water is one of the greatest albums of all-time anyway. The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert has given us an EP of 5 tracks to shoot to the top of the charts, with Somebody To Love featuring George Michael as the main radio play track. George could easily have filled in for Freddie in Queen, his vocals were vastly under-rated in his lifetime, but both he and Freddie were flawless note-hitters. New in at 57.

That leaves kd Lang grabbing another single entry, one I've forgotten - The Mind Of Love - and Dr Alban charting his lesser Sing Hallelujah, lesser to his big hit that is. Kid Creole's 1982 hit I'm A Wonderful Thing is remixed and freshened up a tad, and it's a rather low-key entry for New Order's comeback starter for 10, Regret, at 72. It will go higher cos it's fab.

2nd May 1993

It's 2 weeks on top for D:Ream, as Janet Jackson leaps into the top 10 with Virgin Records' first single, and Inner Circle debut at 7, finally getting a proper hit after years of trying with the very catchy Sweat in the reggae-heavy climate of 1993. EBTG get Simon & Garfunkel top 10, New Order have no Regrets and The Freddie Mercury Concert EP adds to top 10 tallies for all concerned.

A classic non-UK-hit finally charts for The Doobie Brothers, albeit in remixed form - the original was on the CD so it didn't matter really - and Saint Etienne do a fab cover of the old Candlewick Green hit/Jigsaw song, Who Do You Think You Are. Robert Palmer drops one of his best solo records in 29 Palms, and OMD and Howard Jones keep the 80's flag/chart run continuing with lesser tracks.

Utah Saints sample the Human League, Bon Jovi are back again, Bowie has a good single out, for over 20 years of chart hits, Depeche Mode have a dark goodie, Aztec Camera enter with one I've forgotten, P.J. Harvey has her well-regarded 50-foot Queenie, while Poison and Big Country get a mealworm mention.
