My Top 20 also features opening themes of two anime released in 2023. First one is Kizuna no Kiseki by Japanese rock band MAN WITH A MISSION and Japanese singer milet. It's the opening theme of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: The Swordsmith Village Arc (my favorite season of the franchise so far). It also became the breakthrough hit for both acts.

 

I sent milet with her ballad banger to BJSC, but flopped at #21 which was rather disappointing. So here is her rock side instead. :P

After dealing with many big rooms and hard dances, let's move on to melodic dubstep for a while. American producer/singer Amidy joined forces with fellow Americans, producer Danny Olson and singer Tyler Graves. It's also one of the only songs from dubstep subgenre that was able to be number one on my monthly EDM chart. Gravity is giving the MitiS - Homesick vibe, if anyone remembered the song from BJSC.

Yes, this is a rare moment where a K-Pop girl band had a hit on my personal charts. Thanks to ScreaM Records (dance sub-label of SMTOWN), Russian duo Matisse & Sadko did a mindblowing big room house remix of FOREVER 1 by Gen 2 group Girls' Generation. Aside from RAM's successful BJSC entry What Matters, his other track from the same album Wanderlust also appeared in the Top 20. It is Forgive Me, a song with Ukrainian singer/songwriter Natalie Gioia that first only served as an album track. I really love Natalie's vocals and she's one of the best trance vocalists of all time at the moment. I still can't wait for her opera collaboration with Armin van Buuren, which could probably be a landslide Tune of The Year.

The highest ranked anime song on my EOY 2023 chart is the opening theme for the season 2 of Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. It's performed and written by Japanese punk band LONGMAN, under the supervision of Mushoku Tensei's songwriter Yuiko Ohara. It's not the first time I knew the band as they also performed for one of the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations endings. I've decided to give spiral a shot at BJSC because of how lovely the song is, but it's just another J-Flop that finished second from last in the semi.

Unfortunately for my Dance Song of The Year 2023, Time by XiJaro & Pitch and Cari had to finish only at #9 in the EOY countdown. The song became both acts' first number one on my chart after I first discovered XiJaro & Pitch in 2021 and Cari in 2022. The stand out of this song goes to Cari who delivered her infectious vocals to the catchy melody produced by the Belgian x Dutch duo. I wouldn't be surprised if melodic dubstep producers like ILLENIUM and Seven Lions are interested in using Cari's vocals because she deserves her recognition really much.

Disturbed got their relevancy once again with their cover of the Simon & Garfunkel classic, however I'm practically interested in their recent album more. One of their album tracks from Divisive, Don't Tell Me, became a proper hit on my charts thanks to the addition of Heart's Ann Wilson. Craig Connelly only needed to wait for a year to get his second number one after Headed For The Sun. Featuring the one and only HALIENE, Connelly produced Other Side of the World, presumably one of the best vocal uplifting trance songs in the 2020s. Connelly wrote this song to connect people who got separated during the pandemic. The song's music video featured Connelly's fans who sent him their short video to unite every trance fan around the world.

 

This would be HALIENE's first number one on my personal charts, at least for now. I could guarantee Saving Light would be a number one as well, should my flashback chart reach year 2017, as I haven't even started year 2000 yet.

Honestly, this would probably the most surprising song in the Top 10. Here's GINJO, South Korean producer who often produces big room/electro music. It's indeed a big room house song that was released as a part of SMTOWN's first EDM project EP. The song spent only a week at #1, but stayed on the charts for 34 weeks long.

And with number four we got the debut single for Norwegian singer/songwriter Aden Foyer, formerly known as DJ/producer Jonas Aden. Stating that Aden would go for hiatus in the woods, he finally released his debut single The Ballet Girl by the end of 2022. The song blew up on TikTok, helping him to chart at Norwegian Top 40 songs, peaking at #2. The unanticipated change of Aden from an EDM producer to a pop singer shocked many EDM fans. Luckily many of them are still supporting his decision.

 

If anyone deserves to represent Norway for ESC, it's gotta be Aden Foyer, as long as he doesn't do the same formula as The Ballet Girl (like he did in some of his latter releases).

With the number three of my EOY 2023, we got Indonesian musicians consisting of EDM trio Weird Genius and singers Lyodra, Tiara Andini, and Ziva Magnolya. The song was initially made to be the theme song of FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 in Indonesia, but thanks to our shitty political parties, our hosting got cancelled and the U-20 World Cup moved to Argentina. Luckily, the theme song itself didn't get cancelled, possibly due to limited budget and time from FIFA. The song sounds fantastic and it resembles the good old 2018-2020 era where dance music became Indonesia's 2nd most listened genre after pop. It's an amazing combo, though LATHI remains as Weird Genius' best track.

 

Our runner-up goes to another Indonesian act, which was the indie/alternative band Reality Club. Their song Anything You Want became massive on Indonesian Spotify in the last 2 years. Sadly, it doesn't convert into a successful BJSC entry either, as I finished last in the semi of a Sovarasma x Summericia contest where 75+ countries participated there. I still love the song, however. It's also one of the songs that we jam when hanging out with friends.

 

However, the winner, an inevitable winner, belongs to one of the biggest UK hits of 2023 by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding! With the help of Hardwell's Remix that he premiered during Ultra Miami 2023, Miracle spent 7 non-consecutive weeks at #1. The return of trance music in 2023 brought up enjoyment from many old trance fans. Both original and this remix got praised by some trance producers who've been living during their golden era in 1999-2003. It seems that Calvin also play both versions of Miracle during every of his shows around the world, which is rather nice.
