Possibly old stock but also most likely new stock was pressed up to meet demand. Labels deleting records once a single had left the charts wasn't as common in the early 80s as it would become later in the decade.

Sales were quite poor through a lot of 1988 but there were two massive singles that attracted big sales over the Christmas period...

 

Didn’t know how close 1986 was between Reet Petite and Caravan of Love! And how massive the PSB’s lead was over the Pogues in the last chart of 1987, but that is a lot closer the following week so it still counts as a notable battle.

In 1988 Christmas Day fell on a sunday. These days that would still mean a new chart being published. At one time it would have meant no chart being compiled. However, by 1988 the technology was in place to compile a new chart but not the staffing to compile it on Christmas Day. As a result, Bruno Brookes counted down the new Gallup chart on Boxing Day, Monday 26 December 1988. This meant that technically the previous week's chart was the Christmas chart. Fortunately the number 1 was the same, which avoids confusion about which record got the Christmas number 1. 'Mistletoe & Wine; easily claimed the number 1 spot for Christmas 1988 (on whichever chart is chosen as the Christmas chart) but 'Especially For You' sold very well to end up at #2.

Possibly old stock but also most likely new stock was pressed up to meet demand. Labels deleting records once a single had left the charts wasn't as common in the early 80s as it would become later in the decade.

 

The records that re-entered just started up from where they left off the previous January lol and Wham and Band AIDS sales just jumped back to the level they were at at the end of last Xmas. Even the lower charting songs re entered like Frank Kelly and Wizzard Mud Slade and Greg Lake continuing to enter again (I’m looking at 1985s chart)!

The Wham! and Band Aid singles were both re-released and repromoted in December 1985 which accounts for why they both went top 10 once again. I think both the Mud and Greg Lake singles were reissued and repromoted too, possibly off the back of a few older Christmas singles having re-entered the charts in the 1981 to 1984 period.

In 1988 Christmas Day fell on a sunday. These days that would still mean a new chart being published. At one time it would have meant no chart being compiled. However, by 1988 the technology was in place to compile a new chart but not the staffing to compile it on Christmas Day. As a result, Bruno Brookes counted down the new Gallup chart on Boxing Day, Monday 26 December 1988. This meant that technically the previous week's chart was the Christmas chart. Fortunately the number 1 was the same, which avoids confusion about which record got the Christmas number 1. I'm going to post both charts as both could lay the title to the Christmas chart for 1988.

 

I'm sure I've read somewhere that Gallup, Radio 1 and the music industry all treated the chart announced on Boxing Day as being the official Christmas chart, despite it not being out on Christmas Day itself.
