Hello, are you ready to go? We're gonna lose control, so let's go, let's go. I am contractually obligated by my obsessive compulsiveness to mention that I will eventually post the 2023 EOY charts but they will go in the 2023 thread. I do not know if none or some or all of next week's chart will be included in the calculations.

I didn't realise when I was making last week's post that it'd be the last one for that thread, on account of this chart being dated ahead to January 1st. This also means that it's the 10th thread like this I've started and I've been doing this for 9 years, throwing back to a wildly different time when "1989" by Taylor Swift was at #1.

It took some getting, but "All I Want For Christmas Is You" has secured its 8th week at #1. As with last year, Brenda Lee overtook Wham! on the last week, as her second version seems to really galvanise in those last few days. In fact we have the exact same top 6 as last year. Something of note though is the big boost for Perry Como this year, making the top 50 for the first time, which has really eaten into the Michael Buble hegemony. He only barely stayed ahead of Ariana Grande on Spotify this week, so if this trend continues, we could see a shift. The first actual change is Andy Williams moving from #8 to #7 on the list of Christmas songs, but Jack Harlow holds a stronger fort than SZA last year (whose "Kill Bill" at #12 was the highest non-Christmas song) so he can't get a new peak. On the other hand, Kelly Clarkson has made a big move to hit the top 10 for the first time. This is her newest song to reach the top 10 as her last one was "Mr. Know It All", which I must remind for non-Australian readers, is her only ARIA #1 hit, as she got a big boost performing it at the NRL Grand Final at the time. This is actually the song that dethroned "Somebody That I Used To Know". If you ever bemoan the increasing US influence on Christmas canon, then give a hand to Australia because there's not a single Australian song in this top 50 that isn't by someone who offensively depicted neurodivergent people on film. Sia nearly had a second top 50 entry actually. Apart from Perry Como, the big winner this year is Dean Martin, who used to battle Frank Sinatra for allowing the most snow, but has soared ahead this year. Sinatra does however have a first time entry for his version of "Jingle Bells", overtaking Michael Buble's version. Kelly Clarkson, Jonas Brothers, Elvis Presley & Taylor Swift also score first time top 50 entrants, as does Cher with the only new one. Cher's last top 50 entry was in 2001. Big losers this week in the top 50 include Shakin' Stevens & Jose Feliciano who have seriously underperformed compared to last year.

Oh and annual reminder that for some reason, "Do They Know It's Christmas" is using the chart run stats for 2014. I check every year to see if ARIA will ever change this, but they didn't this time.

The only 'new' songs in the top 50 this week are Jack Harlow, Tate McRae & Cher, so the Bubbling Under chart really may as well be a glimpse into that super thrilling Christmas-free chart that so many people demand to be inevitably bored by. Fascinating stuff. It does probably mean that Laufey has had her first charting single in Australia though.

On the album chart, "1989 (Taylor's Version)" has now matched the 9 week reign of "1989". The recent Wham! compilation gets a slight new peak and Cher debuts with her Christmas album. Not much else going on but Christ we've barely got 1 Australian album in the top 50, and only because it has 3 hit singles. Those end of year charts are gonna look grim.

"Lovin On Me" is #1 for a 7th week. It's getting towards prestigious territory without any close contenders, maybe a new debut could unsettle things? In case you were wondering about the intricasies of the chart that are lost to Christmas, let it be known that the entire top 11 is in the same order they were last week. It does mean that "Stick Season" is in the top 10 for the first time after being stuck outside for quite a few weeks. Speaking of new peaks, a perennial 2000s classic has finally gotten a new peak this week, I'm of course talking about "Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits" which is 1 spot higher than it reached in 2009. Oh and "Mr. Brightside" is in the top 20 for the first time. It might even hang around in a similar spot next week. We just barely get a new entry on this week through Fred again.. since he only barely missed the top 50 first week around. It's now Baby Keem's highest charting entry, amazing brother. An interesting note I forgot to put on last week's chart was that it was the first time this decade that Dua Lipa wasn't in the top 50, having been there continuously ever since "Don't Start Now" came out. She's back with a vengeance this week, as are the dueling partners of "Heat Waves" and "Someone You Loved", still with a 3 week gap in top 50 weeks between them. I also neglected to mention that "Heat Waves" went one week shy of being the first, possibly only ever song to go 3 consecutive years in the top 50. Some might say 156 weeks *is* 3 years but I disagree fervently with that. Also notably we've got the return of "Party In The U.S.A.", which has been a Spotify perennial for many years now but this is its first time back in the top 50 since 2010. It's fascinating how relatively modest its deficit is behind what will almost certainly be crowned as the biggest hit of 2023. Speaking of which, I very much hope ARIA post the end of year lists soon. Last year was on a Wednesday morning following the last included chart week so fingers crossed.

"1989 (Taylor's Version)" is #1 for a 10th week in a row, making it Taylor Swift's longest reigning album ever. I saw a Facebook post recently making fun of Scooter Braun for owning Taylor Swift's masters that are now worthless. This joke would work better if all of her back catalogue hadn't pretty much universally increased in activity in the past few years (the original version is charting higher now than it was back in mid-2018 when this dispute arose). Could be something to keep an eye out for in the future, although she'll also be in Australia soon and you better believe there'll be a lot more data to pore through. I already used the only other particularly interesting thing on the album chart this week for a joke in the last paragraph, but oh the "Trolls Band Together" soundtrack has managed to sneak in now.

Anyway, if I don't see you in the 2023 thread to finish that off, this'll be the last of these posts I do for a couple weeks as I'll be on holiday. If all goes okay, Rush will take the reins for those weeks, and probably be either less snarky or a different brand of snark. 5,000 posts, woo :party2:

:hi: Dirca gave me this job while he's on holiday, and he already typed this week's charts for me so I don't have a lot to do here apart from fixing several typos. "Lovin On Me" is #1 for an 8th week, "Stick Season" climbs to #3, and "Riptide" is top 15 for the first time since February 2014, shortly after it won the triple j Hottest 100 of 2013 and upgraded its mid-2013 #7 peak to #6. "Murder On The Dancefloor", originally a #3 hit and the 12th biggest single of 2002, re-enters at #25 but "Unwritten", which is not too far behind on Spotify, is currently not being tracked by ARIA. Hopefully that will change as it could be on track for a new peak (originally #26 in 2005), and then hopefully that will inspire her to finally release "Pocketful Of Sunshine" here and make it the smash hit it should've been 16 years ago (or failing that, to at least give us the "Strip Me" album on Spotify).

"1989 (Taylor's Version)" is #1 for an 11th week in a row and surprisingly, Lady Gaga's "The Fame" has decided to greet me with its first week in the top 50 since July 2011, which is the only vaguely interesting thing I can find on this week's albums chart.

"Lovin On Me" is #1 for a 9th week. Ariana Grande debuts at #2, not quite living up to the #1 debuts of "positions", "7 rings" and "No Tears Left To Cry" ("thank u, next" debuted at #2 but it was released part-way through the week so it's not a fair comparison). She has, however, presumably secured herself a better EOY position than, er, "positions", which was released too late to make 2020's top 100 and then only got itself to #55 of 2021. "Murder On The Dancefloor" climbs to #12 and ARIA have taken notice of "Unwritten"; it re-enters at #18, instantly surpassing its original #26 peak. I believe Natasha Bedingfield was last seen in the Australian charts in 2011 as a feature on Simple Plan's "Jet Lag", a #8 hit here, and last charted as a lead artist when "Love Like This" reached #77 in 2008, unless you're willing to count the physical singles chart, in which case "Bruised Water" did chart in 2009. 21 Savage debuts 2 songs in the top 50. Morgan Wallen's "Thinkin' Bout Me" has been bubbling in the lower 50 for most of the time since his album was released last March, and this week it enters the top 50 for the first time. I don't know if there's any particular reason for that to be happening now, but it is currently a radio hit in Australia.

21 Savage's album also debuts at #1. It's his first #1 album, having previously reached #2 with "Her Loss" with Drake (blocked by "Midnights"), and before that #4 in 2020 with "Savage Mode II". Noah Kahan climbs to #10 and that's about it.

Gonna be brief-ish because I'm a little under the weather. "Lovin On Me" is #1 for a 10th week. This might be its final week at #1, it's hard to tell at this stage because I don't know how big its YouTube/Apple leads are. In any case, I'm going to stop directly referencing the song that's poised to overtake it because in addition to finding it a bit cringe in general, it now reminds me of one of the most miserable day (and a half)s of my life. 2 years ago Benson Boone scored his first top 40 hit, this week he gets his second and it's instantly his highest as well. Sabrina Carpenter is a little more expedited in this process and maybe this one's actually legit! ("nonsense" actually has had very strong longevity but otherwise its only week in the top 50 (all the way up at #22!) was dubious. Flo Milli scores her first top 50 hit. It previously had Lil Yachty credited but this week he's been taken off of it, a very rare un-crediting from ARIA. Michael Marcagi is also charting for the first time, while we can continue to think up think-pieces on the state of Australian popular music. Last year Dom Dolla was one of only 4 Australian artists to score a new top 50 hit, and for that matter, the only one who hadn't charted before. This week he gets a second with "Saving Up", with an uncredited Clementine Douglas on vocals (she also sang on his 2022 single "Miracle Maker" which is a monumental banger). We had the biggest plot twist of the year when "Saving Up" landed a spot ahead of "Rhyme Dust" in the Hottest 100 on the weekend, and now it looks to easily outpeak it next week, it's up to #10 on Spotify tonight.

That being said, there's a hint to future curiosity for Australian entries lower down. From the Bubbling Under section, we've got an arrival for G Flip, who's charted below the top 50 a few times in the late 2010s. If you didn't already assume it, then yes, that's a Like a Version cover of "Cruel Summer", the Taylor Swift one, not Bananarama. G Flip actually broke the record for the most entries in a single Hottest 100 on the weekend, with 7 entries, and one has to expect this cover will figure well next year. However it's also wanting to be shown up as local band Royel Otis are charting even higher with their cover of "Murder On The Dancefloor". It got a mid-week release on Spotify so don't expect much from it here, but if it maintains its streaming performance, we could be in for a very uncharacteristic chart entry. Both of these are odd however as the only Like a Versions to chart before, did so on the back of Hottest 100 performances, it's very rare for the digital release to have immediate impact like this.

Taylor Swift is back at #1 for a 12th week. She keeps Green Day at bay giving them now as many #2 albums as #1 (3), and yes, "...Father Of All" is one of the latter. For the two weeks I wasn't writing this, I didn't get a chance to point out that Maroon 5's compilation which had been somewhat underperforming last year has now seen a boon with a new peak two weeks in a row, I think because a couple of Maroon 5 songs have had a jump in streaming (I did see "Moves Like Jagger" and "Maps" both pop into the Spotify top 200). Anyway I still have another long runner to report because CCR's compilation has seen a new peak this week. They've also had a big boost on streaming lately, often having three songs in the Spotify top 100. "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" might even be close to the top 50 in general but isn't being reported. Neck Deep score the only other debut this week which is the 2nd highest of their 4 top 50 albums. It's such a brief week you might not notice that Troye Sivan dropped out (which I attribute to "One Of Your Girls" collapsing on streaming) meaning that for possibly the first time ever, there are no Australians in the top 50. I expect Troye & G Flip will probably climb back in next week at least. Oh this wasn't brief at all, I guess I was aching to say things again.

With triple j's Hottest 100 in effect, a lot of 2023 releases have vaulted back up the chart to varying extents. At the top of the pile of all things is actually "Prada" which finally gets to #3 after many near misses, matching the peak of "Escapism.", but looking likely to surpass its longevity in the top 50. The actual #1 song was "Paint The Town Red" which has a relative rebound although not much to write home about, which I find is a common situation when the winning song is one that's a highly overexposed pop hit by a non-Australian artist. We also nearly saw the miracle of an Australian in the top 10, not in the Hottest 100, that's a given, but Dom Dolla nearly translated his #3 finish for "Saving Up" into a top 10 placement this week. He could still hang around of course. Reminder that the only Australian top 10 hits last year where two from The Kid LAROI that only sat there for a single week each. Unrelated to all of this is the arrival of YG Marley for a first time entry that looks to keep climbing next week.

Evidently with the Bubbling Under chart, it's another instance of all those big talked about singles in America not actually getting far here. As promised last week, Royel Otis arrive with their mid-week release of their Sophie Ellis-Bextor cover, the timing of which is completely coincidental. It'll be eligible for next year's Hottest 100. The timing is also bad but they should still manage to make the ARIA top 50 next week. Also yes that is how ARIA wrote the Ice Spice title on the website, they really thought of the children with this one.

We're several weeks away from Taylor Swift being in the country which of course warrants a bigger boost in sales than most artists receive period, brace yourself for the end of the month. It comes from what could be considered a minutely notable chart happening as perhaps for the first time ever, something Radiohead related was the best selling album in Australia. We can't add to the 6 Radiohead #2 albums + 1 Thom Yorke #2 album, but The Smile do chart quite a bit higher than they did with the first album, probably owing to the more unified format release timing. Anyway that's the only new album on the chart this week. As another funny Hottest 100 coincidence, this year was the first time since 2017 that Ocean Alley weren't in the Hottest 100, on account of not releasing anything last year, but this week they chart for the first time with their first album, before they were famous, and coincidentally they're one spot ahead of G Flip who just broke the record for most Hottest 100 entries in a single year, ending the 19 years of Wolfmother supremacy and 1 year of Spacey Jane supremacy. The other mildly interesting thing on the chart this week that I just discovered from typing this out is that Eminem's "Curtain Call 2", which has never left the top 50 before and was #32 last week has suddenly collapsed with no explanation. It's still on the Hip-Hop album chart so it's not gone but it's had a very dubious descent this week, that I'll have to remind myself to eye out next week.

Whoops. When I type it up I leave gaps for the re-entries but it's easy to not see it when it's at the bottom, cheers for the heads up.

Nothing drastic to report. Benson Boone is making his way towards the top. He'll probably get to #2 next week. We do finally have an Australian top 10 hit that feels like a legitimate hit (two of the last three spent just 2 weeks in the top 50), thanks to Dom Dolla and that mysterious Clementine Douglas. Also speaking of Australians shockingly getting hits, we've finally got the 2 weeks ago prophesized arrival of Royel Otis, the first bespoke Australian rock band to reach the top 50 since *checks notes* The Wiggles. It's provided a confusing issue for the powers that be that want to support local music, Hot Hits Australia now has both versions of "Murder On The Dancefloor" on its 50 song playlist, which means that if you play it on shuffle there's a very good chance you'll hear both of them in quick succession (admittedly I don't know how the algorithm works, I suspect it could prevent this but it might also not). This is only the second Like A Version to ever make the top 50, the last one was *checks notes* The Wiggles. In any case, this tracking week doesn't include the Hot Hits Aus add so it might actually have some unheard of longevity. btw "Fried Rice" is a banger. Also "Iris" is back again but this time it has an excuse because they're touring here soon/now.

Taylor Swift has the entire top 5 again. She did this back in July last year but it's slightly different this time as "1989" has been replaced by "1989 (Taylor's Version)" and it's ahead of "Midnights" and "Lover" this time. She might need to release another album to outdo herself and get the top 6 perhaps. It also helps that there's very little happening this week. I am finally here to say that Maroon 5 compilation has gotten a new peak, getting bizarrely close to the top 10. We've got only one debut this week. It's from The Last Dinner Party, have you heard of them? Wet Leg managed to debut at #1 so I guess I expected a bit better here. Also in an update to the Eminem story from last week, it seems to be mostly stable this week, so it's just set into a new equilibrium for no particular reason. Shouldn't stop it from reaching the year end list but it'll be significantly lower. Once again there aren't any Australian albums in the top 50 but let's celebrate the scraps we do have. For instance, Connie from Sneaky Sound System sings the hook on Kanye West's "Flashing Lights", in addition to starring Margot Robbie, "Barbie" also has The Kid LAROI & Tame Impala on its soundtrack, and most importantly, Billie Eilish sampled Australian traffic crossing sound effects on "bad guy". I think it's still the only production work she's ever done. Keith Urban also has a feature credit on "Fearless (Taylor's Version)". If you can think of any other examples let me know because we may as well cling to what we can.

50 RE 011 02 ONE MORE TIME... Blink-182

Australia is a serious hotbed for live shows that aren't festivals lately. Taylor Swift will be #1 next week with "Cruel Summer". Like it's so not close that it's completely fair to call the race now. Benson Boone is making a move though so he could still get there afterwards. Beyonce less so, but she'll still jump a lot next week. SZA also announced her Australian tour last week which has vaulted her back up the chart, with "Snooze" such a beneficiary that it returns to its prior #21 peak.

The Bubbling Under chart has shrunk a little bit recently. I think it's moderately interesting to see "Style (Taylor's Version)" in there for the first time. The New Music chart has its own 3 track rule so this is genuinely the first time it's appeared (it also becomes ineligible next week). When the album first came out, that version was not doing especially well and got overtaken by the original even. It's re-asserted itself this time around in a major way. Good Neighbours will unfortunately reach the top 50 next week, and also shout out to CYRIL, a rare Australian entry in this chart.

I'm not touching that. SZA's boosts also are reflected here except "Ctrl" does get a new peak of #22, it previously only got to #30. This week's only Australian entry in the top 50 is from Jessica Mauboy. She's not had a top 50 single since 2019 but this is her 7th top 10 album. "Forget You" is a banger. We can also see the effect of the new deluxe version of The Weeknd's compilation, which had to be significant given that Post Malone's compilation went from behind ahead to 6 spots behind this week. P!nk & blink-182 have also been playing in Australia as you can figure from the rebounds. Usher also sneaks in with his new album, which helps contribute to this being the first week all decade that Harry Styles isn't charting.

This is the part where I'm supposed to make a joke about how I don't understand what's going on because the only international pop star I know who's playing here (Western Australia) is P!nk. Alternatively I'll shout out all of the wise souls who have ever complained about how iT's NoT eVeN sUmMeR aNyMoRe, WhY aRe PeOpLe StIlL lIsTeNiNg To CrUeL sUmMeR? Great news y'all, it IS still a miserable hot summer here. It still will be for all of the next tracking week too. Anyhow, "Cruel Summer" becomes Taylor Swift's 11th #1 hit which I'm told is a record. Last week I said that Benson Boone was moving up with better momentum than Beyonce, in the past week that's flipped around to be a lot closer. Anyway, to put this week into context, Taylor Swift only has 1 less entry than Michael Jackson had on the week that he died. I'm not sure if she'll climb or fall next week but don't expect much to change. Amongst all of this, you might overlook that it's actually a top 50 debut for "You Belong With Me (Taylor's Version)". The stats also reveal that several songs (mostly from "Reputation") were not being tracked until this week, so points for improved chart accuracy. With this in mind, Dua Lipa has probably chosen a bad release week and doesn't quite hit the top 10, but she also only got to #18 on Spotify so #12 is a pretty good result all things considered. The longevity wizard doesn't seem to be a fan at this stage however.

Taylor Swift once again has the entire top 5 in a slightly different order to the last time. Maybe next week she can up the ante to a top 7, I'm not sure what the big new arrivals are gonna be. In the meantime, Royel Otis have chosen a very bad week to release their debut album, as one might think they'd have a chance to challenge the top spot on several weeks but instead end up behind the pack at #10. They can at least boast beating Taylor Swift on the vinyl chart. IDLES return with their 3rd top 50 album, higher than the last one but not as high as the one before that. One of the more famous people to inexplicably follow me on Twitter are the band Middle Kids who last got to #5 but have a bit of a downturn to #20 this time around, bad week still admittedly. Sabrina Carpenter benefits from being on the east side of the country as her album returns with a new peak to boot. I've always suspected that streaming isn't fully being counted for Bob Marley's "Legend". This might still be the case but nonetheless it gets its highest position since 1994 this week. Yeat also charts for the first time.

Not gonna post it on here, but if you're at all interested in my favourite songs of 2023, here you go. Considering that "End Of Beginning" was on my 2022 list, maybe there's a future hit here as well.

It's a second week at #1 for "Cruel Summer". Statements made last week regarding the potency for "TEXAS HOLD 'EM" have perhaps been made too soon. It does reach #2 which is Beyonce's highest charting single since "Sweet Dreams" in 2009 if you can believe it, but the momentum is also Benson Boone next week, who'll be striving for that top spot. Just like Dua Lipa last week, SZA defies her Spotify peak (#11) to reach the top 10 on debut. Aforementioned Djo reaches the top 50 for the first time and will be gunning for top 10 next week. The only other notable action is the ever rare NEW AUSTRALIAN MUSIC KLAXON. We've already surpassed last year as now two Australian artists have hit the top 50 for the first time, with CYRIL's cover of "Stumblin' In" getting some attention. Maybe next time it won't be a cover of a recently viral song. Next week will be a big Taylor Swift exodus that might just be slightly replaced by Fred again.. who is the new talk of the town.

In what's probably the last week of these extremities, Taylor Swift's declines aren't quite the same as that of "VULTURES 1" so she's beaten her own record and has the top 6 all to herself. The lingering threat of "The Highlights" strongly suggests a crack in the armour next week, after which we can consider if the expanded tracklist can finally get it to #1. We've only got one debut this week, with Rod Stewart & Jools Holland. It's the first time Jools Holland has ever appeared on our charts actually. Also new album peaks are so rare that I should probably point out that Sabrina Carpenter got a little bit higher as well.

Is there any such thing as a singles chart that is more boring than ARIA? Mind you I’m not super up to date with charts overseas besides the #1s. Is chart movement really becoming this stale lol

On the plus side I suppose I’m happy for the TS domination. I wonder where Lover would chart if Cruel Summer was out of the picture?

I think it depends on how you look at it. In terms of latching onto new things, Australia seems to be particularly slow (look at Ariana Grande's Spotify debuts yesterday compared to US/UK). I think that's partly because our time zones keep us in the cold for international news/hype cycles, but possibly also there's less focus on promotion here because we're so far away + not a high enough population to warrant it. Wasn't always like this though, I feel like 10-15 years ago we were often a proving ground for new hits & artists.

And otherwise I won't deny that ARIA's zero recurrency policy does contribute as well, but I'll always say there's merit to it because it gives more meaning to the baton passing when it actually happens. Like 'oh, "Dance Monkey" was finally dethroned for good' as opposed to 'well, "Lovin On Me" would still be #1 but we've decided we're sick of it and it declined three weeks in a row so we're giving someone else a chance'. It's a catch-22 where if you don't understand how the chart works, it's confusing, but if you do understand how it works, it feels manufactured and takes away any catharsis because it feels unearned. And it's still confusing anyway lmao.

That’s a good point. It would all come down to manufactured popularity vs. actual popularity. Yes, songs like Dance Monkey, Cruel Summer, Something In The Orange, etc. have spent ridiculous lengths on the chart. But there is a reason for that in that they are just crazy popular songs. It’s unexciting but it’s accurate. There becomes the thing also, where the longer a song stays on the chart the more it will get played commercially. Radio likes to play the popular songs which are the ones that have been on the chart for a long time, and then that advertises people to play/buy the song and the cycle continues. Same goes for streaming Top Hit playlists which feature the biggest songs closest to the top so that people know to think “oh this playlist has Taylor Swifts biggest song from the year so it must be good”.

Juxtapose that with the current events going on with Triple J “mainstreaming” itself and you end up with radio that is either a) playing only the most popular songs or b) playing alt rock hits from 20 years ago because that is the demographic.

Yeah exactly. Popularity begets popularity to such an extent that you rarely see any sign of fatigue...see your own avatar  but then even on the iTunes chart, there's so little new music that people are exposed to liven it up. Stuff like "The Sound Of Silence" (the cover) and "A Thousand Years" have been mainstays on that chart from new purchases for like a decade now.

As a side note too: there's been a big influx in new users on Spotify this year, #50 on the chart is often 90K a day when it used to be 70K for ages. Can't imagine it's favouring new music.
