imo the greatest female soul voice ever, and one of the greatest female artists. If it wasnt for her, we wouldnt have R&B as it is today and certainly the female singers like Mary J Blige and Beyonce that are seen as some of the leading females of our generation may not be here if it wasn't for her.

What are your opinions on her? One of the greatest soul voices ever, or not really your thing?

'I Never Loved A Man....' is one of my favourite albums. The title track is her best song IMO.

think its a case of 'the right place at the right time', im sure r n b would have evolved anyway, if aretha wasnt the queen of soul then someone else would have been..

however i dont mean to detract from her enourmous talent and her influence which is great.

i respect her material more then like it... not my cuppa, but i recognise her talents.

She is unquestionably the greatest ever female vocalist:

Chain Of Fools (1967)

Baby I Love You (1967)

I Say A Little Prayer (1968)

Don't Play That Song (1970)

It is not her fault that since the late 1980s a number of technically superb, but soulless singers (a number of whom have an Optional Forum on BuzzJack) have come along to site her as an influence.

Massacres Covers of Aretha Classics:

Mariah Carey - Don't Play That Song (1990)

Kelly Clarkson - Don't Play That Song (2002)

Celine Dion - Natural Woman (1995)

Whitney Houston - Ain't No Way (1997)

Aretha's peak were her Atlantic Years (1967-1975), but unlike the divas above, she could take any song and make it her own.

Aretha Franklin - Bridge Over Troubled Water (1972)

And Finally she has won more Grammies (19) than any other female artist in its history.
