A friend of mine is doing a radio show and they have a spot playing tracks from albums from the 80s and 90s that were never released as single.

Yesterday I was asked what is the best album track never released as a single?

My instant reply almost on autopilot was Madonna-Til Death Do Us Apart from Like a Prayer

but later I thought... maybe not, maybe there are better

then I thought of U2, Running to Stand Still from The Joshua Tree or Love is Blindness from Achtung Baby

or Sinead O'Connor-Troy from her debut...

any others?

Where does one start?

I'll do the 80s first

Kate Bush - Get Out of My House

The Cure - Plainsong

The Smiths - Cemetery Gates

Pet Shop Boys - Why Can't I Wake Up

New Order - Dream Attack

Depeche Mode - The Things You Said

1990s

Massive Attack - Mezzanine

Radiohead - Climbing Up the Walls

A few of mine:

Bruce Springsteen - No Surrender

oh agree on Portishead-Roads, one of the very best, also Tori Amos-Precious Things

Pixies also had lots including Gouge Away, Wave of Mutilation,

was it Where is My Mind ever a single? cos that would be a candidate for best non-single ever in the history of music

same for The Smiths-There is a light that never goes out, cannot recall from memory if it were a single

Ooh I could easily do a top 100 of album tracks, but popping into my head:

Daydreaming - Dusty Springfield

Footsteps - Pet Shop Boys

When All Is Said & Done - ABBA

The Visitors - ABBA

Beautiful Boy - John Lennon

The Way Old Friends Do - ABBA

Soldiers - ABBA

When It's Cold I'd Like To Die - Moby

Ce Matin-La - Air

Tell Me The Answer - Texas

Keep It Together - Madonna

One More Chance - Pet Shop Boys

(some were singles outside the UK, though)
