Shakespear's Sister - Stay

Don't make tunes like this anymore.

"Stay" is a song from the album Hormonally Yours by British pop duo Shakespear's Sister. An acoustic version can be found on the album Long Live the Queens!.

The single was the only Shakespear's Sister song that featured Marcella Detroit more prominently on vocals than Siobhan Fahey, with Detroit singing the verses and lead chorus and Fahey singing the song's bridge. Reportedly, when the single went on to become the duo's biggest hit internationally, reaching number one on the UK singles chart and number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, this furthered the tension that was mounting between the two musicians. Incidentally, the success of the single and the imagery of its video turned the press focus on Detroit as an "angel with a beautiful voice" and Fahey as a "witch from hell."

Following the success of "Stay" and the Hormonally Yours album Detroit left the band. Neither Fahey nor Detroit have been able to duplicate the success of "Stay".

Shakespear's Sister (sometimes written without the apostrophe) was a band consisting of Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit. The band formed in 1988, the same year that Fahey left Bananarama. Detroit exited the band in 1993, and Fahey admitted herself into a psychiatric unit with severe depression.

Detroit was tall, with a soprano voice, while Fahey was petite, with an alto voice; this was the opposite of what one might expect on seeing them, and it lent a novelty to their performances.

The name is taken from the title of a song by The Smiths, which in turn refers to a section of Virginia Woolf's feminist essay A Room of One's Own in which she argues that had Shakespeare had a sister of equal genius, as a woman she would not have had the opportunity to make use of it.

The band's single "Stay" is their best known work, achieving number one in both the UK (for eight weeks) and Ireland singles charts. It was their highest entry in the UK charts, being the only time they entered the top five. The single also became their biggest U.S. hit, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1992.

As a duo they released the albums Sacred Heart and Hormonally Yours, the latter recorded at Friar Park, in George Harrison's home studio. #3, recorded in 1995-1997 by Fahey after Detroit's departure, was finally given an independent release in 2004.

A greatest hits CD/DVD retrospective was also released in 2004, containing all of the group's singles and videos, as well as tracks intended for the #3 album. A new compilation, titled Long Live The Queens, features a tracklisting of rarities and unreleased material including remixes & b-sides. This was issued in late 2005. Was this ever even released in the UK? It's still something of an anthem in the US and easily the most played song of the early 90's.

Yes but it flopped.

All the UK & US No.1s & No.2s can be found HERE

Select Chart Features.

The UK 1s & 2s are from the beginning in 1952 to present

The US 1s & 2s are from the beginning in 1940 to present

Oddly, Sir-Mix-A-Lot's 'Baby Got Back' gets a fair bit of play on UK music channels on those "classic hits" weekend things, even though it only made it to number 56. :o

I remember 'Bohemian Rhapsody / These Are the Days of Our Lives' as my parents liked Queen. My mum also played 'Save The Best For Last' a lot back then. 'Stay' by Shakespeare's Sister is a fantastic song and I liked 'Rhythm Is A Dancer' and 'Sleeping Satellite' at the time too.

whitney was the boring song of that year
