June 1, 20241 yr Author This Week's #1 Single Girls Aloud Whole Lotta History On Tuesday 28th May, I attended The Girls Aloud Show, the comeback tour for one of my favourite groups of all time. Those who know me well know that this was a huge moment for me, with the one and only time I saw Girls Aloud beforehand being in 2005 as my first ever concert, when I was 8 years old! I had an amazing time, and I typed a full review of the concert in the Girls Aloud AF. Please beware that spoilers for the setlist WILL follow in this commentary! Of course, this has had an impact on my chart, and we see 19 songs out of the 20 in the setlist making my chart. Some have charted before, from watching the Ten Tour on television in 2013, to the effect following Sarah's sad passing, while others make my chart for the very first time. Something New of course came out during the era of my chart, releasing less than a year after my first chart. My highlight of the show was 2006 single Whole Lotta History. Released as the fourth and final single from third album Chemistry, Whole Lotta History peaked at #6, the twelfth top 10 hit in their consecutive streak of 20. Though over the years it hasn't gone down as a Girls Aloud classic for the public, it's kept a special place in my heart and is firmly my favourite ballad of theirs. On tour, it was home to a particularly special moment, with Sarah's verse at the very end of the song being played into the arena alongside footage from the video, and it continued to repeat as the song winded down, the girls went to get changed, and footage of Sarah graced the screens. Sarah is so very missed and I was extremely emotional, but it made for such a beautiful tribute to an iconic popstar and phenomenal person with one of her most essential solos. Naturally, it re-enters the chart at a new peak of #1, becoming the girls' second chart-topper. This Week's Notable Top 10 Movements Girls Aloud Something New Something Kinda Ooooh Sexy! No No No... Long Hot Summer Untouchable Elsewhere in the top 10, we see five further Girls Aloud songs making their presence known. All hit a new peak, except for Something New of course, which spent eight non-consecutive weeks at #1 upon its release in 2012. Nevertheless, it re-enters at #2, the highest it's been since 2013! Something Kinda Ooooh, Sexy! No No No... and Untouchable all re-enter in the top 10 for the first time, having all charted before following Sarah's passing, while Long Hot Summer makes its very first chart appearance as this week's highest new entry, bringing the girls' top 10 tally to a total of 12. Alongside this, Ten returns to #1 in the album chart for only a third week, while every song from the setlist other than Graffiti My Soul (honorary #41!) makes my top 40. All of the girls' singles have charted at one point or another, with the only exceptions of See the Day, I Think We're Alone Now, Walk This Way and The Loving Kind (justice for the latter's absence from the setlist, the only loss! :( ). Album track Girl Overboard charts for the first time at #31, and On the Metro returns at #21 for the first time since its release in 2012. That and the loving kind are probably my two favourite tracks from the girls and coincidentally they were near the end of the group which was a shame because I'd really started to like the direction they were going in. ^_^
