July 5, 2024Jul 5 Sky has listed the following as potential replacements for Sunak as leader of the Tories: Kemi Badenoch Suella Braverman James Cleverly Robert Jenrick Jeremy Hunt Priti Patel Tom Tugendaht David Cameron Why do I feel like Cameron will be reinstated...? https://news.sky.com/story/who-could-replac...leader-13156654 Think Robert Jenrick might get it simple due to the fact the rest would all be horrendous.
July 5, 2024Jul 5 Surely the next Tory Leader depends on a few things, I'd suspect it will be Braverman/Patel vs someone like Jenrick/Tugendaht. Again, the key issue is going to be how they can win back the Reform voters or gain the Reform Party.
July 5, 2024Jul 5 The Tories will lurch further to the right to chase the Reform vote. It won't work. Braverman / Badenoch as possible leaders. Edited July 5, 2024Jul 5 by DoBelieveTheHype
July 5, 2024Jul 5 I understand 1 of the 2 undeclared seats had a Reform win by more than 100 votes before irregularities were found, and they eventually sent all the counters home before they come back to do it all again. So they could effectively end up with 6 as the TUV in NI is allied with Reform.
July 5, 2024Jul 5 This is wet from Starmer. Thanking Sunak - he should be skewering him.  that’s convention he’s always going to be nice after winning!
July 5, 2024Jul 5 So the final result is now slated for tomorrow as Inverness, Skye and West Ross-shire are going to a recount tomorrow.  So anyone who tries to stay up to the last result will be nearing exhaustion by the time that comes in. Result expected late this after for South Basildon.
July 5, 2024Jul 5 Why do people think Jenerick will have a chance, he’s awful and not charasmatic at all and he’s def not a centrist vs Braverman etc he’s as right wing as them!
July 5, 2024Jul 5 I’m so elated to see the Kent blue washed away - a shame Faversham and Herne Bay couldn’t swing but some historic changes nonetheless - Ashford Labour gain, as well as across most of Medway area! I wonder if Tunbridge Wells is the first Kent LD seat ever. :o
July 5, 2024Jul 5 2017: 12.8 2019: 10.2 2024: 9.6Â Well. Look at thqt! I guess centrism isn't popular sfter sll! And if the centrists hadn't sabotaged him in 2017, 2019 would never have happened. Whoops!

Whoops! Oh Michael, pipe down  It's a bit like us England fans winning and still moaning :D :D Taking in to consideration turnout was low overall (some places down significantly vs 2019), voter ID now mandatory I'd say it's still good. What's the point of piling up votes on safe seats when it doesn't mater?

What's the point of piling up votes on safe seats when it doesn't mater? I mean national vote share does matter to an extent. 33% is incredibly low bar to be forming a government from.  Corbyn got 7% more of the vote than that in 2017 and lost - if it wasn't for the Reform Party then Labour wouldn't be in power and it would have been 5 more years of Conservative rule. Starmer has to acknowledge that in his programme for government whatever that looks like given all he's given us in the manifesto is buzz words and platitudes. There's something wrong with a system where you can get a majority on such a low vote share.

Labour have been well ahead in the polls, if anything Reform have eaten in both the Tories & Labour over the coming weeks. People have used their vote as a protest, which is worrying, but that's a challenge for the future, but one the strategists have to be wary of.

Most of that Reform vote is coming from people who voted Tory in 2019 and likely would have voted Tory if Reform wasn't an option. I haven't got time to do a seat by seat but if you combine the Reform + Tory vote across all seats it would probably knock Labour out of majority territory at the very least. FPTP is a joke, you can be happy Labour are in power but still accept that they're not in power on merit but on a right-wing vote split. Corby got 40% of the vote in 2017, Starmer got just 33% yesterday - it's hardly a ringing endorsement. Reform decided both the 2019 and 2024 elections by deciding where to stand. July 5, 2024Jul 5 If you need any more confirmation very little will change under this Blairite government Reeves has got her excuses in early saying 'there's not a lot of money' and that we need to 'unlock private sector investment'. More PFI style rubbish and Tory style dodgy public sector contracts. Think there'll be a lot of buyer's remorse in a few years time.
July 5, 2024Jul 5 Great seats number, lower than Blair and disappointing based on polls, but otherwise a DISASTER for Labour. Ditching Corbyn and left wing policies have really famaged the party. We should be thanking our lucky stars that Farage ran because, otherwise, even with the WORST CAMPAIGN IN HISTORY, Tories would have won another 5 years, or, at best, ir owuld havr brrn a hung parliament. Shocking stuff.

It's true they ate in to the Tory vote, but they've also eaten in to Labour too seeing as they tore in to the heartlands in 2019. Yes FPTP isn't the best, but not sure PR is either. Just leads to way more coalitions and even more less qualified people to have a platform or run the country. People find it hard to accept that the United Kingdom is predominately right-wing leaning. Changing the system is just going to allow the country to lurch further to the right. I'm sure all those independent MPs hate FPTP too! If you need any more confirmation very little will change under this Blairite government Reeves has got her excuses in early saying 'there's not a lot of money' and that we need to 'unlock private sector investment'. More PFI style rubbish and Tory style dodgy public sector contracts. Think there'll be a lot of buyer's remorse in a few years time. I don't know what more people expected? Yeah your life won't change significantly overnight, but you this country will be in a much better place in 5 years time than we already are. Even listening to Jeremy Hunt's winning speech, he almost alludes to the fact the Tories have underfunding the NHS. Great seats number, lower than Blair and disappointing based on polls, but otherwise a DISASTER for Labour. Shocking stuff. Reform were tanking in the polls before Farage came along. I'm sure it's an absolute disaster when they're the party in power for the next 5 years!!!
July 5, 2024Jul 5 And less total votes (at least it looks that way, pending final results). Definitely the results should open a discussion into our voting system and hopefully the Greens and Independents start doing that (and Reform too, those idiots can be useful for something, even if PR would mean more of them it'd also mean more of the good parties). Why have you missed out the biggest parliamentary party that wholeheartedly backs voting reform?
July 5, 2024Jul 5 Ed Miliband announced as energy secretary. Bridget Phillipson is education secretary. Wes Streeting health secretary. Shabana Mahmood justice secretary.
