Biography

On the one hand, there's Donald Glover: the writer, actor, comedian, and director extraordinaire best known for his work on the sitcom Community and his original series (and homage to his hometown) Atlanta. Then there's Childish Gambino, the Grammy-winning multi-hyphenate musician and producer who's not as easy to describe—but that's also kind of the point. Shirking definition is key to his allure, a superpower of sorts that keeps onlookers entertained, intrigued, and altogether baffled in turns. Glover was born in 1983, at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, but Childish Gambino came into existence, famously, with the aid of an online Wu-Tang Clan name generator, sometime around 2008, when he decided to use the moniker so that fans of his comedy wouldn’t think his music was just a bit. While not exactly the kind of backstory many rappers and singers would readily admit to, it's a fitting place to start in order to understand his idiosyncratic approach to music, which manages to strike a delicate balance between artful and whimsical. Glover's first recordings—which he once said sounded like a “decrepit” version of Drake—predate the name change and never formally saw the light of day. But Childish Gambino's earliest mixtapes, from the late 2000s, are the reflections of a cultural sponge who simply desired to create on his own terms. Ever since, genre descriptors have grown increasingly useless—he shrewdly treats genre like more of a suggestion than a limitation—but terms like hip-hop, R&B, funk, and indie electro-pop, all pushed to their experimental bounds, are good jumping-off points. Some of Gambino's biggest hits, from the nimble display of "3005" and psychedelic soul of "Redbone" to the blistering raps of "This Is America," share little in common aesthetically, yet he executes each with aplomb. Some catalogs are emblems of polished order and cohesion, but his is a rabbit hole of tangled genius and surprises well worth falling into. - Apple Music

Morgan Wallen

Lies Lies Lies

170x170bb.jpg

1st single from forthcoming studio album

Released: 5th July 2024

Label: Big Loud Records

Biography

Morgan Wallen’s band members have a name for his hairdo: the Tennessee Waterslide. You have to have a certain boot-and-blue-jeans swagger, good humor, and lack of self-importance to pull off a mullet in the 21st century, but Wallen has all that in spades, not to mention a taste for sounds that belie the look. Of course, with a voice steeped in Appalachian smoke, country is practically Wallen’s birthright. He was born in 1993 in tiny Sneedville, Tennessee, and grew up singing harmonies with his sisters in the church where their father preached. By 2014, he’d managed to get onto and eliminated from The Voice, but not before showing an innate versatility and relaxed style. His breakthrough came with 2017’s “Up Down,” a Southern-rock spring break anthem that radiated frosty-can cool with help from Florida Georgia Line. But his 2018 debut, If I Know Me, proved Wallen could ride solo on cleverly penned everyman hits like “Whiskey Glasses,” a honky-tonk heartbreak sing-along about getting over your blues with something a little stronger than beer goggles. As easy as his country goes down, Wallen stays committed to exploring interesting new directions. In 2019, he converted “Cover Me Up,” the signature song of anti-bro Jason Isbell, into a hymn of support for returning veterans. And in 2020, he not only held down “Heartless,” Diplo’s EDM foray into the Wild West, but dropped “7 Summers,” a soft-focus Eagles-style ballad about a boy who lost a girl because he wouldn’t leave his East Tennessee home. His third album, the sprawling, 36-track One Thing at a Time, arrived in 2023. - Apple Music

Biography

A plaintive, quivering country troubadour indebted to the literary side of Red Dirt country -- he wrote a song saluting Evan Felker of the Turnpike Troubadours, one of the genre's leading lights of the 2010s -- Zach Bryan began carving out a career for himself while he was still enlisted in the Navy. He recorded his 2019 debut DeAnn during a break in his service and it, along with videos he posted online, helped him cultivate an audience that crested with the 2020 release of Elisabeth and its accompanying single "Heading South." Bryan capitalized on this burgeoning popularity with American Heartbreak, a sprawling 2022 triple album that marked his major-label debut and mainstream breakthrough: it debuted at number one on Billboard's Country Albums chart. He consolidated his success in 2023 with a self-titled album that featured the hit duet with Kacey Musgraves, "I Remember Everything." A native of Oklahoma, spending time in both Oologah and Tulsa, Zach Bryan received his first guitar at the age of 14. Soon he learned how to play, then started to write songs. When he came of age, Bryan enlisted in the Navy, just like his parents before him and his father's father before that. During his spare time in the service, he wrote songs. While on leave, he spent some time relaxing at an Airbnb in Jacksonville, Florida. He and his friends spontaneously decided to record the songs that became his 2019 debut DeAnn; he named the album after his late mother. DeAnn earned positive buzz among Red Dirt aficionados, so Bryan decided to record a second album in the same fashion. Featuring the single "Heading South," the resulting Elisabeth appeared in 2020. The following year saw Bryan release live versions of "Hell or Highwater" and "Condemned," and make his debut at the Grand Ole Opry. "From Austin" appeared in early 2022 as the lead single to his third record, American Heartbreak, a triple album issued through Warner Records in May 2022. The release found an audience, debuting at number one on the Billboard Country chart and five on its Top 200. Bryan supported the album with an extensive tour, the final show of which was captured on the LP All My Homies Hate Ticketmaster (Live from Red Rocks). In January 2023, Bryan released the single "Dawns," which featured Maggie Rogers. A relatively succinct 16-song eponymous effort arrived on August 25, featuring appearances by Kacey Musgraves, the Lumineers, Sierra Ferrell, and the War and Treaty. - Apple Music

Oh 28 is not a new entry but Pink Skies is a reentry. :D
Good this is back, beautiful track! the album hasn't generated the interest I was expecting in the UK tough :/
28 would have been better though
I couldn't get into the repetitive song structure of 'Pink Skies' at first but after hearing it in the context of the album (which is fab btw) it's grown on me a lot. agree with the sentiment that it's no '28', though

Biography

Growing up in Woodbridge, Virginia, American vocalist Tommy Richman fully committed to a musical career during his college years, dropping out at 19 after early singles “Pleasantville” and “Melba” began to pick up traction. After a move to Los Angeles, he subsequently issued his first full-length project, the seven-track Alligator. By mid-2023, his talents had attracted the attention of R&B vocalist Brent Faiyaz, who signed him to his ISO Supremacy imprint in mid-2023. In 2024, Richman's breakout single “Million Dollar Baby” transformed him from an underground favorite to an international hitmaker. Though he had built the single’s hype through extensive TikTok marketing, few could have anticipated its almost-unprecedented success upon release: the bouncy, Southern hip-hop-inspired track debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, and soon became hotly touted as a "song of the summer." - Apple Music
