What if you’re underestimating Trump? It’s already clear a lot of people overestimate the Biden’s/Harris’s/Starmer’s of the world for some reason. Name me one person on earth who could be in the position Trump was four years ago. Surrounded by crackpots(Guilliani, Sidney Powell) then facing numerous charges for all kinds of things some pretty serious(election interference etc) his supporters getting locked, sued by all corners, disowned by most members of his party, to now….owns a social media company worth billions, a crypto coin worth tens of billions, higher approval ratings than ever. A President with a huge mandate. It’s a comeback very few people on earth could have achieved. So the perception is that Trump is a clown but it’s clearly not matching the reality. Putin is being put in a corner and he will have to save face very soon.

Money buys you power. I don't know why that is so hard to grasp. All of it reads straight out of a playbook from Germany in the 1930s. Him owning a social media platform (which nobody uses outside of his cult) and that bitcoin is so dodgy, obviously pushed by his followers. All of his followers are just useful idiots, exactly the same mantra that Reform are playing on. Trump is clearly a clown in political terms, he's obviously not stupid but you only have to listen to someone like Boris Johnson that the way to play Trump is to let him think everything is his idea. The idea that Putin is being put in a corner is laughable - there's been a war for 3 years, Trump would just have appeased Putin, then in 5 years time he becomes even more bold.

i would've said the same for kamala harris, chip shop diva and jools lebron, and look what happened :kink:

I caught myself thinking today that I keep forgetting Trump is a human being. Then I remembered he isn’t and felt better.

Trump is a very spiteful man. He's taken away full Secret Service protection from his ex Nat, Sec. Advisor John Bolton who made an enemy of Iran. Al because he criticised Trump in the election campaign. He'll be responsibe if he gets killed. Iran wants to kill him and Rex Tillerson, Trump's first Sec. Of State. Bolton had protection in Trump's first term then it was removed but Biden re-instated it. Ended on Tues at noon.

It shouldn't be up to one man. Should be up to the SS Director, based on threat levels.

Republicans already drafting constituional ammendments ro allow him to have a third term, but with provisions that would NOT allow for Obama to run lol. Lord!!!

How far this will go may be a crucial stress test on how robust American democracy really is.

Russia and Turkey both have, in theory, term limits on their presidencies. In practice, of course, Putin has stuffed the laws around term limits with a bunch of clauses, exceptions and constitutional changes that boil down to 'two term-limit, except if you're called Vladimir Putin', and the same for Erdoğan. They're not alone in the strongman world either, it's not a democracy but Xi relatively recently removed term limits in China. Likely once these strongmen are gone, whoever replaces them will continue changing the constitution every so often with similar transparently ridiculous ploys to allow them to rule for life unless huge changes to the political culture of those countries occurs.

This amendment for example, has to be a non-starter, in a similar way to those Russian and Turkish amendments, it allows someone to be elected to the Presidency three times, but if they serve two consecutive terms, they cannot be elected to another one. That might as well read, in this current political moment, 'two-term limit, unless you're called Donald Trump'. Which is being done of course because Obama 2028 is waiting in the wings should Trump try any other method of abolishing term limits.

Anyone with more brain power than a potato shouldn't see any distinction between 'two terms, a break, then one' and 'one term, a break, then two', if term limits are to be extended (so of course most Republicans won't), but the precise reason they are there in the first place is to stop megalomaniacs and strongmen from holding onto the presidency for the sake of power and allowing them the time necessary to cement that power by controlling the institutions around democracy such that they won't get voted out.

to whit, to the post two above, I counter, Donald Trump and Elon Musk are egotistical lunatics who shouldn't be anywhere near power; precisely because they have shown they are willing to bend the rules of democracy to keep themselves in power longer than the constitution allows or the people decide.

The Trump third term thing is a bit silly given his age. It also shouldn’t exactly be a concern right now and it’d need some incredibly unlikely things to happen for it to ever pass so a bit of a pointless move by whoever came up with it.

It's an effort to rewrite the rules though. What I long suspected too, the MAGA crowd trying to create a system where democracy exists but it's not really democracy (ala Russia). This is the sort of move though that I think could backfire. It is funny though that they'd be scared to go up against Obama.

Do you have a link as his proposed Attorney General said last week that he wouldn't do that.

He still should not be assassinated by Iran though. Whilst there's a big threat he should be protected. Am not saying for life, even he doesn't expect that.

Trump will be too old for a third term anyway. In fact I think JD Vance will be President before the next election. Trump will either die or throw in the towel.

For a country that’s been trying for decades to show the world that russia is bad, they surely keep doing the exact same f***ing things

Trump's had a huge row on the phone with the PM of Denmark. She told him Greenland is not for sale and he says America will take it whether it is or isn't. LOL.

*Gets the popcorn in for the next 4 years" Should be fun folks...if this first few days is anything to go by... :D

The Greenland situation is more complex than meets the eye but the idea the US will just take a NATO member’s territory is for the birds. I’m sure Trump is trying to pressure them into a sale which I highly doubt will be successful but it’s an important strategical place and of course there is a lot of untapped resources there which means it’s kind of invaluable to Denmark. I doubt he’ll give up the idea easily though that’s his kind of field after all.
Fun fact - former Chelsea player Jasper Gronkjaer was born in the capital of Greenland Nuuk!

25% tariffs on Colombia, trying to go to 50% next week, all because they refused to accept deportation flights. Can see this getting messy and backfiring. Adding inflation to coffee, sugar and flowers will show America who is the real boss!

Seems to have worked. This is the kind of no nonsense tactic the UK should have with certain countries to be honest. It gets things done. These countries sell into the US they need the US much more than the other way around.

Really hope that Latin America can resist Trump doing this (unfortunately I doubt Colombia can do it alone, they'd need some regional trade protectionism, probably led by Brazil or Mexico to stand a chance) or this is going to be the norm, a bully America putting up emergency tariffs for any country that disrespects him. They're entirely correct of course, the mechanism of this deportation is inhumane and ad-hoc shock and awe, and they're right to block it, it's almost as if our Conservatives had just launched one of those Rwandan planes without the permission of the Rwandan government.

I can see a Colombian government vulnerable to internal problems and the loss of export markets quickly caving before the price rises are felt by American consumers.
