Glad to see that like clockwork the tariffs-go-tariffs-pause pendulum has resumed. Good news in that it's not quite economic meltdown, but this really betrays his lack of a backbone. The humongous tar

Oh I don't know, maybe as the guy is a complete spoon? Basically trying to recreate Gillead.

Well maybe he has a point as reports say there were some staffing issues in the control tower that evening. Apparently the ATC was doing the jobs of three people and others doing the duties of two people. We'll wait and see what the investigators say.

Trump’s personality only really allows him to take credit for something or blame someone else, it works in most things politically but accidents or tragedies he’s a bit woeful. You saw that with Covid. Blaming DEI hires is both crediting himself for getting rid of them and blaming others for having them that’s why his mind went there even though it’s very unlikely to have been a factor

It wasn’t a factor at all, that’s why it’s bonkers. Zero grace from Trump and this is the sort of stuff where Trump has just put pressure on the air traffic controllers without any knowledge, when it looks so far from the audio they haven’t done much wrong at all. The DEI play is just plain fecking stupid, not sure someone identifying as a helicopter is the reason for a tragic accident.

Yeah on the face of it I agree but there hasn’t been a crash in 16 years so something had to go wrong

It’s just Trump being Trump, running his mouth off with no evidence and giving his own right wing opinion and playing to his core fake truth grassroots.

Of course, but to just blame things on something which are not likely to be true is pure stupidity.

Here we got them, tariffs are coming! Can't wait for the price increases to be blamed on Biden, Obama and people identifying as helicopters.

Just don't see how this ends well for Americans in the short term at all. I kind of get the Mexico ones, but I think pissing off your allies is a terrible move. Even if the tarrifs are removed, not sure the increases will (or certainly not 25%..)

So 25% on goods from Mexico and Canada and 10% on goods from China from midnight. Says this will help stop immigrants and Fentonyl coming in. Watch Canada retaliate.

BREAKING NEWS. Many FBI agents, including all those who investigated Trump, told to resign or be sacked, 88 already escorted out of Washington field office in last hour.

The guy's losing the plot! Vengeful man. Don't they have unfair dismissal laws there? Can he just do as he likes and sack them all?

Isnt the tariff phenomena just the reaction to the end of empire which happens in all empires as they fall, see Joseph Chamberlain splitting the Tories in 1903 with his Empire preference (even Winston Churchill went to the Liberals because of it). This is the end of the American 20th century and China is taking over for the rest of this century!

He’s only picking these fights with countries that have a trade surplus so they have a lot more to lose. Even if they both lose, they lose a lot more so it’s risky but could work out as they will be hit a lot harder and it almost puts the onus on them to negotiate a solution. It’s risky but if it works on even half the countries he’s got something extra that another leader wouldn’t have.

Yep.

Authoritarians can't stomach challenge. It's why their regimes always end in diagrace. They need yes men. It's also reaaally bad, dictator-likw optics.

No. They're the result of Trump.

Yep.

And how will this help with the price of eggs???

No. They're the result of Trump.

And Trump symbolises late stage capitalism, that’s my critique which you seem to have missed.

Not sure about that. I get the Mexico one, as China are using Mexico as byproduct to get around tariffs. But I don’t see how anybody wins here? All that happens is the other country imposes tariffs and prices go up. Yeah he might win out if blocs don’t stay strong, but judging by how he’s pissed people off so far and seems to have no regard for international relations I’d say it’s more likely to backfire. Nice to see he’s also done this on a weekend as his team probably know the markets will tank, or should I say, are already tanking.

Weird power play move and not a strategic one.

He's now threatening to use military action in Mexico to take out drug cartels if they can locate them.

Well no matter what you think of him and I know you all hate him you can't deny he's hit the ground running.

EDIT. Lawrence Herman, an international trade lawyer has given an example of what the tariffs mean.

With the Trump administration, there are no rules. There is no respect for international treaties or agreements. There is no longer value to the US signature on international documents.”

The tariffs are stupid, it's bonkers that the President can do this and it doesn't go through Congress (who would block it).

The whole ideology is built upon growing the US economy and stopping China. It reminds me a bit of the Liz Truss disaster budget. The Markets in the US don't like it and it seems bonkers and relies upon countries appeasing Trump. When in reality, what I think is more logical solution is Canada develop greater trade relations with the EU and China. For all what you think about China, from an economic standpoint they are a reliable trade partner.

I see this playing out that American basically relenquish a lot of soft power that they have and give this to China. America is not reliable at the moment, so I think the the traditional allies move to China (I think the UK may move this way too). And the end result of this I suspect is the South American countries develop their own trade bloc.

I don't understand how Trump can just sack people as he wishes, is there not a disciplinary/warning process in the US for dismissing people? and a body like ACAS that can investigate these unfair dismissals? I just presumed every developed country had these systems in place tbf

Canada isn’t going to sell in to China like they do the US. It just wouldn’t happen. China don’t need Canada and logistically it’d be costly. Canada needs the US much more than the other way around and this is Trump using his leverage in this way. Most people wouldn’t do that as diplomatically it’s a hostile move to an ally but to call it bonkers is ridiculous. It’s a very common business move to use your leverage in this way if you feel you’re being undercut or taken advantage of in another way.
