Picking this 10th spot has been the hardest decision in the whole chart. I had 9 songs guaranteed for the top 10 but could have picked any of this '15 MINUTES', 'Not My Fault', 'the boy is mine' or 'APT.' for the final spot. In the end 'Taste' won out as it felt like it had earned it with it's three spells at #1 and it felt right to cap off Sabrina's perfect year. It was helped by a brilliantly fun music video that sees Sabrina and Jenna Ortega, very literally, going to war over a man with plenty of OTT recreations of violent Hollywood death scenes. But one fun music video does not a good song make and 'Taste' has a lot more going for it than just the video. It's the ultimate petty anthem with it's tongue-in-cheek lyrics made impossible not to go viral, especially with a cheeky-nod to the old Olivia Rodrigo situation "I know I've been known to share"). It's the whole package; catchy hook, memorable lyrics and a music video that fully matches, and even enhances, the concept.

From my first listen, I already knew that this was their best ever song. This was the moment where Yuna became my favourite member of the group, she doesn't have a lot to do on the actual song but she kills in the video and now she is who comes to my mind when I think about this song. That's the sign of a star! This was cruelly overlooked for them, the production is so clean and the chorus is easily one of their strongest. I thought the only way that they could have made this better would have been if Lia had been on it. Then after she re-joined after her hiatus, they released a new version with her vocals too :cheer:

This ended up being the bit hit from the album, despite being quite understated, especially when compared to the lead single. There is a lot going on in the production, it's full of synths and strings but they remain in the background and let Ari's vocals shine. It's not the full power and high notes we're used to from Ari's previous work but a more mature, restrained performance that sells the sense of despair in the lyrics. Ari shown why she is a soon-to-be Oscar nominated actress in the music video that very closely interpolates the concept of 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' with heart-breaking accuracy.

It's quite a monotonous song with Rick Rubin and Jacob Bugden's production staying with a pretty consistent sound throughout, but it somehow works in it's advantage. I really can't put my finger on why this works so well for me but I've found it impossible to ignore. This re-entered my chart towards the end of the year after I was blessed enough to see Bea perform this live in Manchester. The concert was great and it really helped the album became one of my faves of last year. Letting 'Better Man' miss out at #101 is looking stupid now.

Madison is really an A-list star in my eyes and I'm just waiting for the rest of the world to catch up. It looked like this was going to be her breakthrough when it got off to a great start on Spotify and reached #50 in the Official Charts in the opening week. Alas, it didn't quite have enough to ever make the top 40 but still stuck around long enough to reach 10 weeks in the top 100 and hit ACR. I saw Madison twice last year on tour and this was the highlight on both occasions. That helped it get a second stint in my top 10 and the release of the 'Jennifer's Body'-inspired video helped it get a third. She sounds so good on these dancier tracks and it has earned her a well-deserved Grammy nod for 'Best Dance Pop Recording'.

There's an argument to be made that they don't mix together completely well on this track and, I'll admit, the transition between the chorus and Rosalía's verse is awkward (it's a shame because the visual transition is so clean) and it feels like a completely different song but I believe this to be intentional and found it it to work. They have great chemistry in the video and the transition back to Lisa is much smoother. One thing I've always said about BLACKPINK and why I love their music so much is that their outro's are always fiendishly good at ending on a high and wanting you to smash the repeat button and that's certainly the case here. The outro here is my favourite part of the song and I seriously think it might be my favourite thing Lisa has ever done. Her flow is so catchy on it. I'm so ready for the album now.

The song of last summer, it's possibly one of the most summery songs ever made with it's breezy production and playful mood instantly transporting you to a beach. So it's no surprise that a beach is where the music video is set with Sabrina speedboating, stealing a credit card, sunbathing and dancing atop a surfboard before eventually being arrested, setting up the plot that continues in the 'Please Please Please' video. You've all heard this song, it was massive, it was everywhere and it's undeniably great. Sabrina knows what she's doing, there's plenty of lyrics that build ready-made to go viral ("I'm working late 'cause I'm a singer" and "that's that me espresso". At 4 weeks this was the equal longest running #1 in calendar year 2024. Nine Inch Nails frontman and Academy Award winning composer Trent Reznor named 'Espresso' as the best song of 2024 and who's going to argue with that. We are now left with either Sabrina Carpenter or Taylor Swift getting their first EOY #1 hit or Ariana Grande getting her 4th overall and first since 2018.

This is the wildest, horniest and just pure fun moment on 'Short n Sweet' with it's title being a reference to the teen-pregnancy classic of the same name starring Elliot Page. The guitar break on here is heavenly and was the moment in my first listen when I knew this was something special. I'm still holding out for a video release during the UK leg of the tour and for the performance to go viral and shoot this back up the charts. The winner will be revealed tomorrow but will it be Ariana Grande or Taylor Swift???

For a considerable time after 'The Eras Tour', I thought that this was going to be my #1. After the insane Taylor-mania in the summer, it felt like a fitting way for it to conclude. However, it has just been pipped to the post. Seeming that Taylor had only been in my EOY top 10 once before, with 'Bad Blood' landing at #10 almost ten years ago in 2015, this has still got to be considered an amazing result. For whatever reason, Taylor has always underperformed a bit in my EOY charts, 'Reputation' is one of my all-time favourite albums but only spawned one EOY hit, but I'm finally starting to give her the respect she's well-and-truly earned. 'I Can Do It With a Broken Heart' was an instant stand-out on the album. I ended up loving it, but I still have the criticism that it's too samey-sounding and that it's time to move on from Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner. However, this track has some nice flourishes (such as the click track giving it an impression of a 'pep-talk' to herself before she goes on stage) that elevate it into being something very special. Taylor has never been afraid from being personal in her songwriting but I find the concept of this one to be particularly effective at trying to help you envision what it's like to have the level of fame and scrutiny and adoration as her. I know people usually hate these 'footage of tour' type of music videos but I think it's a perfect fit for this song. Plus, 'The Eras Tour' was much, it was a phenomenon and if anything deserved this type of music video, it was certainly that.

Ariana Grande) 2024 96 Don't Wanna Break Up Again Absence does indeed make the heart grow fonder as Ariana's return from her hiatus leads to her bagging herself her 4th EOY #1 hit and her first since 2018's 'breathin'. It means that it's a second year in a row where an artist has achieved the clean sweep (song, album and artist of the year) after Maisie Peters did the same in 2023. Released over a year ago now, it's road to #1 didn't go swimmingly with it only spending a solitary week atop my weekly charts (unheard of for an Ariana lead single), but it got a second wind after the live version of the album was released which was enough for it to win out. In many ways, 'yes, and?' is an odd choice of lead single, as it's sonically unlike anything else on the album and goes for a late 80s/early 90s Madonna sound of house that hasn't necessarily been very on trend as of late. She then teases us with an extended intro before we finally get to hear her voice. But Ari's built up more than enough goodwill with me that I will follow her wherever she goes with her sound so I was instantly on board. Discussing the negative press she has received in recent years, this is a defiant anthem about overcoming negativity and moving forwards and she's certainly done that by starring in the biggest film of 2024 (in the UK) and will tomorrow be celebrating her first Oscar nomination.
