December 11, 2024Dec 11 Author Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ Makes Merry Move Back to No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 By Gary Trust | 12/9/2024 Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” dashes through all competition on the Billboard Hot 100 once again, surging nine spots to No. 1 for a 15th total week atop the chart. The carol reigns in a record-extending sixth holiday season. It was originally released on Carey’s album Merry Christmas in November 1994 and, as streaming has grown and holiday music has become more prominent on streaming services’ playlists, it hit the Hot 100’s top 10 for the first time in December 2017, and the top five for the first time in the 2018 holiday season. It led at last, prior to this week, over the holidays in 2019 (for three weeks), 2020 (two), 2021 (three), 2022 (four) and 2023 (two). “When I wrote [it], I had absolutely no idea the impact the song would eventually have worldwide,” Carey marveled in 2021. “I’m so full of gratitude that so many people enjoy it with me every year.” “All I Want for Christmas Is You” became Carey’s 19th Hot 100 No. 1, the most among soloists and one away from The Beatles’ overall record 20. It also made Carey the first artist to have ranked at No. 1 on the chart in four distinct decades (1990s, 2000s, ‘10s and ‘20s). Holiday cheer infuses half the Hot 100’s top 10, including the entire top three. Below Carey, Brenda Lee bounds 15-2 with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 last holiday season, reaching the summit at last 65 years after its release. Plus, Wham!’s “Last Christmas” leaps 18-3, as the 1984 single hits a new Hot 100 high. Two other classics return to the Hot 100’s top 10: Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” (19-5) and Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas” (33-10). Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” on Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings, drew 38.2 million streams (up 42%) and 24.4 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 56%) and sold 3,000 downloads (up 81%) in the U.S. Nov. 29-Dec. 5, according to Luminate. The single soars 10-1 on Streaming Songs for a 19th week on top (tying Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” for the second-longest rule in the chart’s history; Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, led for 20 weeks in 2019). “All I Want for Christmas Is You” also reenters Digital Song Sales at No. 6, following four weeks at the summit, and pushes 35-21 on Radio Songs, where it has hit a No. 11 best. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” ties for the sixth-longest command among the 1,176 total No. 1s dating to the Hot 100’s Aug. 4, 1958. start. (All seven songs have led since the list adopted electronically-monitored Luminate data in November 1991, at which point longer commands than before subsequently became more common.) Below is a recap of the seven longest-leading Hot 100 No. 1s – with Carey the only artist with two entries on the elite list: 19 weeks, “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Shaboozey, 2024 19, “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, 2019 16, “Last Night,” Morgan Wallen, 2023 16, “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber, 2017 16, “One Sweet Day,” Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, 1995-96 15, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Mariah Carey, 2019-24 15, “As It Was,” Harry Styles, 2022 Now up to 15 weeks, Carey’s “Christmas” extends its mark as the holiday song with the most time logged atop the Hot 100, among three Yuletide leaders. “The Chipmunk Song,” by The Chipmunks with David Seville, burrowed in at No. 1 for four weeks beginning in December 1958, followed by Lee’s three weeks last season with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” is the first song to top the Hot 100 in six distinct runs on the chart, and in six distinct years, as its latest coronation follows its commands in the 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 holiday seasons. (Just one other song has led in each of even two stays: Chubby Checker’s “The Twist,” in 1960 and 1962.) With the latest Hot 100 dated Dec. 14, 2024, Carey has now placed at No. 1 in a record-extending 20 distinct years (per Hot 100 chart dates), encompassing her 19 leaders: 1990-2000, 2005-06, 2008 and, thanks to “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” 2019-24. Next up are four acts that have each spent time atop the Hot 100 in 10 individual years: Paul McCartney/Wings (1971, 1973-76, 1978, 1980, 1982-84; additionally, The Beatles, with him as a member, led in seven years: 1964-70); Beyoncé (2003, 2006-09, 2017-18, 2020, 2022, 2024; plus, Destiny’s Child, with her as a member, ruled in three years: 1999-2001); Michael Jackson (1972, 1979-80, 1983-84, 1987-88, 1991-92, 1995; also, The Jackson 5, with him in the group, led in 1970); and Madonna (1984-87, 1989-92, 1995, 2000). Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” extends the longest span from a song’s first week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 to its latest to one week shy of five years (charts dated Dec. 21, 2019-Dec. 14, 2024). Carey claims the second-longest span for an artist atop the Hot 100: 34 years, four months and two weeks, dating to her first week at No. 1 (Aug. 4, 1990) with her debut smash “Vision of Love.” Only Lee boasts a longer career stretch of topping the chart: 63 years, five months and three weeks, from “I’m Sorry” (July 18, 1960) through “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (Jan. 6, 2024). Carey unwraps her record-extending 94th week at No. 1 on the Hot 100, across her 19 leaders, dating to the chart’s inception. Most Weeks at No. 1 on Hot 100: 94, Mariah Carey 60, Rihanna 59, The Beatles 56, Drake 50, Boyz II Men “All I Want for Christmas Is You” concurrently shines brightest on Billboard’s multimetric Holiday 100 chart, leading for a 62nd week, of the chart’s 70 total weeks since the list originated in 2011. The anthem also rules as the top title on Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Holiday 100 Songs chart. Holiday hits decorate half the Hot 100’s top 10. Below Carey, Brenda Lee dances 15-2 with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 last holiday season, reaching the top for the first time following its 1958 release. The song totaled 35.7 million streams (up 52%), 19.8 million in airplay audience (up 39%) and 1,500 sold (up 84%) Nov. 29-Dec. 5. Wham!’s “Last Christmas” vaults 18-3 on the Hot 100, as the 1984 single hits a new Hot 100 high, surpassing its prior No. 4 peak. It tallied 34.3 million streams (up 57%), 17.9 million in radio reach (up 20%) and 2,000 sold (up 75%) in the tracking week. Six of Wham!’s seven top 10s have now reached the top three, with the duo of George Michael (who died in 2016) and Andrew Ridgeley having previously hit the top three in 1984-86 with “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” “Careless Whisper” (each No. 1 for three weeks), “Everything She Wants” (No. 1, two weeks), “Freedom” and “I’m Your Man” (each No. 3); plus, the pair’s “The Edge of Heaven” hit No. 10 in 1986. Two other classic carols return to the Hot 100’s top 10: Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” (19-5) and Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas” (33-10); they have peaked at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. The former, released in 1957, drew 33.5 million streams (up 55%) and 19.9 million airplay audience impressions (up 35%) and sold 1,000 (up 67%) in the tracking week. The latter, from 1964, collected 25.5 million streams (up 60%) and 18.7 million in airplay audience (up 30%) and sold 1,000 (up 85%). Kendrick Lamar & Rest of Top 10 A week after blanketing the Hot 100’s entire top five, and seven of the top 10, with debuts from his album GNX, Kendrick Lamar posts three songs in the top 10: “TV Off,” featuring Lefty Gunplay (2-4); “Luther,” with SZA (3-6); and “Squabble Up” (No. 7, after launching at No. 1). “TV Off” – the Hot 100’s top non-holiday title – concurrently rises 2-1 to become Lamar’s sixth leader on both the multimetric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts. Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” slips 6-8 on the Hot 100, two weeks after it added a record-tying 19th week at No. 1. It tops the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart for a 25th week, tying Morgan Wallen’s “Last Night” for the longest domination for a song by a male artist this decade; overall, only Gabby Barrett’s “I Hope” has led longer (27 weeks) in the 2020s. Since the Hot Country Songs became the genre’s main songs list in 1958, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” is tied for the fourth-best reign. “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” also adds a 19th week atop Radio Songs (64.9 million, down 5%), solely claiming the second-longest No. 1 stay since the chart began in 1990. It breaks out of a tie with Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” (2023) and Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” (1998) and now trails only The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” (26 weeks, 2020). Elsewhere in the Hot 100’s top 10, Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With a Smile” descends 7-9, following four weeks at its No. 2 best.
December 18, 2024Dec 18 US HOT 100 3.11.24 SUMMARY & REVIEW #10 THE TOP 10: 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' is the highest Christmas entry, up 6 spots to 10! Kendrick Lamar is new at 9 ('Man At The Garden') and 8 ('Reincarnated'). 'Die With A Smile' is down 5 spots to 7 for Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' falls off number one, down to 6. Kendrick and Dody6's 'Hey Now' is new at 5. 'Wacced Out Murals' sees Kendrick see at 4. Lamar and SZA's 'Luther' enters at 3. Kendrick Lamar and Lefty Gunplay's 'TV Off' debuts at two, and entering straight in at number one from his new album 'GNX' is 'Sqaubble Up' by Kendrick Lamar, bagging his third US number one of 2024 and third week atop the chart in 2024, as he has 7 out of the top 10 songs belonging to him! NEW ENTRIES: 98 - Gang Baby - NLE Choppa (3/10) This might be the most sexual song I've ever heard in my life. The lyrics cannot go one line without mentioning something to do with sex. 'Gang Baby' is track 1 from his album 'SL*T SZN' (I'm dead serious... that's the album name). This has a trap beat along with rushed rapping that feels like it could have had better cuts; this is sloppy, and the hook doesn't hook me in... it feels weak. I thought Christmas music was going to block this rubbish from charting, but I guess not. I'm also not trying to get a permanent ban from some of the websites I'm on, so I won't go into the tracks deep dive. 95 - Ma Meilleure ennemie - Stromae/Pomme (7/10) Previous first listen: Even though I don't speak the song's language, I can still tell that it's a passionate song, and I would even call it special; it fits an emotional scene perfectly and has that deepness and passionate side to it that Stromae and Pomme bring out really well! Featuring in 'Arcane League of Legends,' this proves to have some real solid base! 94 - I'm Not That Girl - Cynthia Erivo (7/10) 93 - The Wizard And I - Cynthia Erivo/Michelle Yeoh (6/10) 90 - Dancing Through Life - Jonathan Bailey/Ariana Grande/Ethan Slater/Marissa Brode/Cynthia Erivo (6.5/10) 86 - No One Mourns The Wicked - Ariane Grande/Andy Nyman/Courtney-Mae Briggs/Jeff Goldblum/Sharon D. Clarke/Jenna Boyd (5.5/10) 85 - Hello Miss Johnson - Jack Harlow (5.5/10) Previous first listen: Jack often brings something new to the table that interests me; this is new but certainly not a bop. 'Hello, Miss Johnson' is a flirty song where Jack flirts with Miss Johnson's daughter alongside a medium-paced pitch that aligns with the rest of the song. Added: I upgraded my score by 0.5. Also, I really like the music video to this! 68 - What Is This Feeling? - Ariana Grande/Cynthia Erivo (5/10) 53 - Popular - Ariana Grande (6/10) Previous first listen: 'Popular' followed the same back-and-forth style musical songs do as this featured in the movie 'Wicked.' Cynthia Erivo also gave vocals on this. The song features a wide range of instrumentals and uses them at the correct time, which is impressive seeing how much the vocalists changed their voice. As much as this wasn't bad, I really cannot get into musical songs with acting. The piano and the light-to-strong vocal holds were a good part of the song, though, and the flow sounded correct. 44 - Defying Gravity - Cynthia Erivo/Ariana Grande (6/10) Previous first listen: Ending up as 7 minutes long, 'Defying Gravity' is also on Wicked the movie; it has a mass range of instrumentals and a whole orchestra behind the scenes! It mixes into the scene and sounds like it's blended well... it's just not my kind of thing. 27 - Gloria - Kendrick Lamar/SZA (6/10) Previous first listen: With an alternative R&B kick, SZA's 'Gloria' delves into love and also marks SZA and Kendrick's 6th collaboration together. This ends the album on a slower-moving song that hits the right notes and gives the right laid-back feel to end the album on. It didn't go above and beyond for me, but it definitely was clear and a good move to put here. 24 - GNX - Kendrick Lamar/Hitta J3/YoungThreat/Peysoh (7/10) Previous first listen: Continuing his bold, fearless style, this track brings out the drums with quality soul-rap and showcases this album's style extremely well, once again another song that certainly didn't miss. 14 - heart pt. 6 (7/10) Previous first listen: Continuing his 'The Heart' series, Kendrick mixes his more conversational delivery with emotional rap, which works as a fitting side to the album. The series showcases Lamar's views on life at the moment, a strong song that says a lot. 13 - Peekaboo - Kendrick Lamar/AzChike (7/10) Previous first listen: Bringing in some of that style that sounds a bit like 'Squabble Up,' Kendrick creates a hardcore song that combines Gangsta Funk to create something that has a real flow and creativity to it with a hook that gets stuck in your head within a single listen. 'Peekaboo' doesn't disappoint. 11 - Dodger Blue - Kendrick Lamar/Wallie The Sensei/Siete7x/Roddy Ricch (6/10) Previous first listen: With vocals from Roddy Ricch and other rappers, 'Dodger Blue' continues the sharp lyrics with the 'GNX' album style. The features were well chosen, and this song works well. 9 - Man At The Garden - Kendrick Lamar (7/10) Previous first listen: This poses as a song that makes you think and has meaning to it while fitting into the album structure; it's speaking out and taking leaps and risks to get you to the place you are, which is what Kendrick is doing today still. I admire this, and it makes the listeners think and really builds a new thought that 'Man At The Garden' shows. 8 - Reincarnated - Kendrick Lamar (6.5/10) Previous first listen: Sampling 'Made N*****' by 2Pac delves deeper into meaningful rap music; it starts with a Spanish poem to start the song and moves into a gritty main rap with plucks of a guitar in the background that sound unique and centre it out from other rap songs, with Kendrick continuing his wide range of sounds in his songs. It's safe to say the production level is continuing its peak with the raw, infused voice that is Kendrick Lamar. 5 - Hey Now - Kendrick Lamar/Dody6 (7/10) Previous first listen: With production from 'Not Like Us' producer Mustard, 'Hey Now,' this is very experimental and provides a sound that can't easily be replicated or unheard of. This features vocals from LA rapper Dody 6, who gives a clean, fresh sound at the end of the track that doesn't merge the energies wrongly but instead fits aside Kendrick and runs the rest of the track smoothly. 4 - Wacced Out Murals - Kendrick Lamar (7/10) Starting off with a rough, powerhouse of a song that immediately grabs attention and spreads Kendrick's harsh essence across the track, the track talks about legacy and speaks volumes, which I admire, and the production was bold and made it a great atmosphere to start off 'GNX.' What a wish for better! Is instead of just using the boom-bap beat on the west coast rap, it had more flavour instead of just sharpness. 3. Luther - Kendrick Lamar (6/10) Previous first listen: 'Luther' is a conscious hip-hop/soul song with additional vocals and writing from R&B star SZA. The song follows the traditional boom-bap routes while having a nice landing for both Kendrick and SZA's vocals with strings and a structure that builds the song. The main problem for me is that the song doesn't do too much, though, and just follows a rhythm that doesn't sound like it has enough flavour, especially to be a main track. Nice try, endrick, but you can do better. 2. TV Off - Kendrick Lamar/Lefty Gunplay (6/10) Previous first listen: With its high, well-produced beat by Mustard, Kendrick continues his high, intense energy, as this shows that there's more to come. This is a good track but not an album highlight for me. 1. Squabble Up - Kendrick Lamar (9/10) Previous first listen: WOW!! 'Sqaubble Up' uses the same snippet that started the 'Not Like Us' music video to start this song, and this is an all-round flavour punch that infuses character, something new, and a bit of everything to make this a mega catchy song. It has an old-school swing to it that adds to its catchiness while not making this a radio song but still making this extremely universal to listen to and setting new boundaries in rap music. This is a great follow-up to 'Wacced Out Murals' and really shows a strong point, not just in Kendrick but possibly in this decade of rap. I 100% expect to see this in my most streamed.
