December 18, 2024Dec 18 Author Mariah Carey Ties Her Longest Hot 100 Rule With 16th Week at No. 1 for ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ By Gary Trust | 12/16/2024 Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” crowns the Billboard Hot 100 for a 16th total week. The song matches her longest command on the chart, first set by “One Sweet Day,” with Boyz II Men, in 1995-96. The carol, which tops the Hot 100 for a second consecutive week this holiday season, also ties for the third-longest total domination in the chart’s 66-year history, after only the 19-week No. 1 runs of Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” this year and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, in 2019. Notably, with “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and “One Sweet Day,” Carey has logged the Hot 100’s two longest-leading No. 1s by a woman artist. She’s also tied for the third-longest reign among women, thanks to 14 weeks at No. 1 for “We Belong Together” in 2005. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” additionally leads the Streaming Songs chart for a record-tying 20th total week, equaling “Old Town Road” for the longest No. 1 stay dating to the chart’s 2013 start. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” was originally released on Carey’s album Merry Christmas in November 1994 and, as streaming has grown and holiday music has become more prominent on streaming services’ playlists, it hit the Hot 100’s top 10 for the first time in December 2017, and the top five for the first time in the 2018 holiday season. It led at last, prior to the past two weeks, over the holidays in 2019 (for three weeks), 2020 (two), 2021 (three), 2022 (four) and 2023 (two). “All I Want for Christmas Is You” became Carey’s 19th Hot 100 No. 1, the most among soloists and one away from The Beatles’ overall record 20. It also made Carey the first artist to have ranked at No. 1 on the chart in four distinct decades (1990s, 2000s, ‘10s and ‘20s). Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” on Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings, drew 47.7 million streams (up 12% week-over-week) and 25.7 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 5%) and sold 6,000 (downloads and physical singles combined; up 83%) in the U.S. Dec. 6-12, according to Luminate. Boosting the song’s sales in the tracking week, 7-inch and 12-inch vinyl and cassette and CD singles were released Dec. 6, in honor of its 30th anniversary. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” holds at No. 1 on Streaming Songs for a record-tying 20th week, matching Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus (in 2019), for the longest rule dating to the chart’s 2013 inception. It rises 6-4 on Digital Song Sales, following four weeks at the summit, and 21-17 on Radio Songs, where it has hit a No. 11 best. “All I Want for Christmas Is You” ties for the third-longest command among the 1,176 total No. 1s dating to the Hot 100’s Aug. 4, 1958, start. (All seven songs have led since the list adopted electronically-monitored Luminate data in November 1991, at which point longer commands than before subsequently became more common.) Below is a recap of the 14 longest-leading Hot 100 No. 1s – with Carey the only artist with three entries on the elite list: 19 weeks, “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Shaboozey, 2024 19, “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus, 2019 16, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Mariah Carey, 2019-24 16, “Last Night,” Morgan Wallen, 2023 16, “Despacito,” Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber, 2017 16, “One Sweet Day,” Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men, 1995-96 15, “As It Was,” Harry Styles, 2022 14, “Uptown Funk!,” Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars, 2015 14, “I Gotta Feeling,” The Black Eyed Peas, 2009 14, “We Belong Together,” Mariah Carey, 2005 14, “Candle in the Wind 1997”/“Something About the Way You Look Tonight,” Elton John, 1997-98 14, “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix),” Los Del Rio, 1996 14, “I’ll Make Love to You,” Boyz II Men, 1994 14, “I Will Always Love You,” Whitney Houston, 1992 Now up to 16 weeks, Carey’s “Christmas” extends its mark as the holiday song with the most time logged atop the Hot 100, among three Yuletide leaders. “The Chipmunk Song,” by The Chipmunks with David Seville, led for four weeks beginning in December 1958, followed by Brenda Lee’s three weeks last holiday season with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” “All I Want for Christmas Is You” extends the longest span from a song’s first week at No. 1 on the Hot 100 to its latest to exactly five years, from the charts dated Dec. 21, 2019, through latest, Dec. 21, 2024-dated list. Carey claims the second-longest span for an artist atop the Hot 100: 34 years, four months and three weeks, dating to her first week at No. 1 (Aug. 4, 1990) with her debut smash “Vision of Love.” Only Lee boasts a longer career stretch of topping the chart: 63 years, five months and three weeks, from “I’m Sorry” (July 18, 1960) through “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (Jan. 6, 2024). Carey collects her record-extending 95th week at No. 1 on the Hot 100, across her 19 leaders, dating to the chart’s inception. Here’s a recap of the artists with the most weeks spent at No. 1 on the Hot 100: 95, Mariah Carey 60, Rihanna 59, The Beatles 56, Drake 50, Boyz II Men Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” concurrently tops Billboard’s multimetric Holiday 100 chart, leading for a 63rd week, of the chart’s 71 total weeks since the list originated in 2011. The anthem also rules as the top title on Billboard’s Greatest of All Time Holiday 100 Songs chart. Holiday hits light up the Hot 100’s entire top five, led by Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Notably, the 1958 release adds a 13th week at No. 2 on the Hot 100, all spent below Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” – extending the longest stretch of two songs ranking at Nos. 1 and 2 simultaneously in that order. (In a case of holiday gift-swapping [literally], when Lee’s classic led for three weeks last season, Carey’s placed at No. 2.) Here’s a look at the songs to total the most weeks at Nos. 1 and 2 on the Hot 100, respectively, together. (Songs with a * peaked at No. 2.) 13 weeks: No. 1, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Mariah Carey / No. 2, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” Brenda Lee (2019-24) 11 weeks: No. 1: “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Shaboozey / No. 2, “I Had Some Help,” Post Malone feat. Morgan Wallen (2024) 11 weeks: No. 1, “One Sweet Day,” Mariah Carey & Boyz II Men / No. 2, “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),” Whitney Houston (1995-96) 10 weeks: No. 1, “Lose Yourself,” Eminem / No. 2, “Work It,” Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott* (2002-03) 9 weeks: No. 1, “Old Town Road,” Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus / No. 2, “Bad Guy,” Billie Eilish (2019) 9 weeks: No. 1, “Hello,” Adele / No. 2, “Sorry,” Justin Bieber (2015-16) 9 weeks: No. 1, “Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix),” Los Del Rio / No. 2, “I Love You Always Forever,” Donna Lewis* (1996) 9 weeks: No. 1, “Physical,” Olivia Newton-John / No. 2, “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” Foreigner* (1981-82) Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock,” from 1957, rebounds to its No. 3 Hot 100 high, from No. 5; Wham!’s “Last Christmas” (1984) slips to No. 4 from its No. 3 best, achieved a week earlier; and Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas” (1964) jingles 10-5, having peaked at No. 4. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With a Smile” – the Hot 100’s top non-holiday title – rebounds 9-6, following four weeks at its No. 2 best in November. Kendrick Lamar posts three songs in the Hot 100’s top 10, all from his album GNX, for a third consecutive week: “Luther,” with SZA (6-7), after reaching No. 3; “TV Off,” featuring Lefty Gunplay (4-8), after hitting No. 2; and “Squabble Up” (7-10), after leading in its debut week. Lamar is the second artist this year to link a streak of at least three weeks with three or more top 10s, after Sabrina Carpenter (eight weeks with three top 10s, September-October). Among male artists, Drake had last achieved the feat (three weeks with at least three top 10s, July 2018). Concurrently, “Luther” becomes Lamar’s seventh No. 1 on both the multimetric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts – and his third on each chart from GNX, earned in each of the past three weeks. SZA scores her fourth and first leader on the respective lists. Rounding out the Hot 100’s top 10, Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” backtracks 8-10, three weeks after it notched a record-tying 19th week at No. 1. It claims a 20th week atop Radio Songs (62.9 million, down 3%), becoming the second hit to reach the milestone since the chart began in 1990, after only The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” (26 weeks, 2020). “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” also rules the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart for a 26th week, solely claiming the longest domination (over Morgan Wallen’s 2023 No. 1 “Last Night”) for a song by a male artist this decade; overall, only Gabby Barrett’s “I Hope” has led longer (27 weeks) in the 2020s. Since the Hot Country Songs became the genre’s main songs chart in 1958, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” boasts the fourth-best reign.
December 18, 2024Dec 18 US HOT 100 17.12.24 SUMMARY AND REVIEW #12 THE TOP 10: 'Sqaubble Up' is down to 10; at 9, 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' continues dropping. 'TV Off' at 8 and 'Luther' at 7 sees more falls for Kendrick. 'Die With A Smile' is the highest non-Christmas entry and bounces up to 6. Burl Ives 'Holly Jolly Christmas' leaps to 5, and 'Last Christmas' falls a spot for Wham. Heading into top 3 territory, Jingle Bell Rock' is up two spots to 3, and 'Rockin Around The Christmas Tree' has Brenda Lee at 2 for another week! And getting there in the 16th week atop the charts and spending their 69th charting week at 1 is 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' by Mariah Carey! NEW ENTRIES: 98 - Indigo - Sam Barb/Every Anna (4/10) Serving as a track of Sam's album 'Restless Mind,' the country song has a guitar beat and pace filled with drum pounds; sadly, it's not that much of a hit for me and really fails to market its own sound that propels it; it's just quite boring and feels like it lacks in a lot of ways. 93 - White Christmas - V/Bing Crosby (5/10) BTS member V collabs with the late Bing Crosby on a remix of the classic 'White Christmas.' It keeps the original version well while adding someone different to it and something new; it fits well but doesn't really serve as a Christmas staple. 90 - Toxic Till The End - ROSÉ (5/10) Previous first listen: She's following the same basic pop routes of 2024, and this is no different from the other tasteless songs she's been putting out this year. I admit this has emotion to it, but it feels like Taylor Swift from Temu or something that's been done over and over again already... There's no way this is becoming a hit single, and if this was pushed as a single from her new album, I wonder just how bad the other singles will be! Second listen: This is still Taylor Swift from Temu. 87 - Rosones - Tito Double P (4.5/10) Posing as a Mexican party song that really doesn't match the lyrics with the energy, it not only disappoints but feels jumbled up and weird; putting the crazy lyrics with the traditional Mexican trumpets and crunchy vocals equals this, and I feel it really could do better with some spice to the song. 66 - El Club - Bad Bunny (5/10) Previous first listen: This is a song about Bad Bunny simping over his ex with an electronic groove and quick edits in the music video; this is unique, which is something I like, but it fails to get stuck in my head and be something I love. It's alright. Added: The Spanish-speaking singer still doesn't show the single in greatness, and I believe something bigger could've been done with this; rather, it ended up like this. REENTRIES: 99 - Jingle Bells - Meghan Trainor [This is so bad that it charting must be a sign of the end times.] 91 - Burning Down - Alex Warren [still good] 89 - Khe? - Rauw Alejandro/Romeo Santos [it's alright.] 85 - Good News - Shaboozey [it deserves a spot here!] 48 - Christmas Time Is Here - Vince Guaraldi Trio [i could've done without this charting... in fact, I would've preferred that.] 47 - Happy Holiday/The Holiday Season - Andy Williams I like it. 46 - Wonderful Christmastime - Paul McCartney [Decent] 45 - Little Saint Nick - The Beach Boys [still awful] 44 - Santa Baby - Eartha Kitt/Henri Rene and his orchestra [There are so many remixes of this song...] 42 - Blue Christmas - Elvis Presley [Respectable] NOTEWORTHY CHANGES: songs that fell over 10 spots: 96. GNX - Kendrick Lamar/HittaJ3/YoungThreat/Peysoh (Down 29) [HIGHEST FALLER] 95. St Chroma - Tyler, The Creator/Daniel Caeser (Down 16) 76. Gloria - Kendrick Lamar/SZA (Down 17) 75. What Is This Feeling? - Cynthia Erivo/Ariana Grande (Down 13) 74. Man At The Garden - Kendrick Lamar (Down 22) 72. Heart Pt 6 - Kendrick Lamar (Down 18) 69. Popular - Ariana Grande (Down 16) 68. Reincarnated - Kendrick Lamar (Down 22) 60. Peekaboo - Kendrick Lamar/AzChike (Down 12) 57. Dodger Blue - Kendrick Lamar/Wallie The Sensei/Siete7x/Roddy Ricch (Down 16) 55. Defying Gravity - Cynthia Erivo/Ariana Grande (Down 10) 54. Wacced Out Murals - Kendrick Lamar (Down 25) 52. Hey Now - Kendrick Lamar/Dody6 (Down 20) Songs that climbed over 10 spots: 66. Messy - Lola Young (Up 26) [HIGHEST CLIMBER] BEST AND WORST: New entries: BEST - Toxic Till The End - ROSÉ WORST - ROSONES - Tito Double P Whole top 100: BEST - 'Sqaubble Up' - Kendrick Lamar WORST - 'No One Noticed' - The Marias NEXT WEEK PREDICTIONS: Albums from Snoop and Dre or Stray Kids could make an entry despite it being unlikely. For singles, KSI could enter, and possibly Bossman D-Low, Polo G, or Glorilla's new Christmas song.
