March 5Mar 5 Author Kendrick Lamar & SZA’s ‘Luther’ Leads Billboard Hot 100 for Second WeekBy Gary Trust | 3/3/2025Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “Luther” leads the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart for a second week. A week earlier, the single – whose title is an ode to late R&B legend Luther Vandross, who is sampled on the track — became Lamar’s sixth No. 1 and SZA’s third.“Luther” is also making unprecedented moves on Billboard’s radio airplay charts. Reflecting its mass-appeal mix of R&B and rap, it becomes the first song to have topped both the Adult R&B Airplay and Rap Airplay charts in the quarter century-plus that the surveys have both been publishing.Further in the Hot 100’s top 10, Chappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” reenters the region at a new No. 8 high and Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control,” at No. 9, spends an 80th week on the chart overall, becoming just the fourth song to reach the milestone in the list’s history.‘Luther’ Airplay, Streams & Sales“Luther,” on pgLang/Interscope/ICLG, totaled 51 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 9% week-over-week), 38.7 million official streams (down 14%) and 4,000 sold (down 30%) in the U.S. Feb. 21-27.The track tallies a second week at No. 1 on the Streaming Songs chart; rises 6-3 for a new high on Radio Songs; and falls from its No. 4 best to No. 12 on Digital Song Sales.“Luther” becomes the first song to have ruled both the Adult R&B Airplay and Rap Airplay rankings (which began in 1993 and 1999, respectively), jumping 6-1 on the former, a week after it hit No. 1 on the latter. It also lifts to No. 1 on both the genre’s overall R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart and Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay. Plus, a week earlier, it crowned Rhythmic Airplay. It additionally holds in the top 15 on Pop Airplay. (Adult R&B Airplay reflects plays on a panel of adult R&B-formatted radio stations; Rap Airplay reflects audience reach of rap titles on R&B/hip-hop and rhythmic stations.)No. 1 R&B/Hip-Hop & Rap“Luther” concurrently claims a 10th week at No. 1 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts, which use the same methodology as the Hot 100. The song became Lamar’s seventh No. 1 on each genre chart and SZA’s fourth and first on the respective lists.‘Pony’ Up to New HighChappell Roan’s “Pink Pony Club” returns to the Hot 100’s top 10 at a new No. 8 best, from No. 11; it previously reached No. 9. The song is her second top 10 hit, after “Good Luck, Babe!” reached No. 4 last September.“Pink Pony Club” –originally released in 2020– concurrently becomes the singer-songwriter’s third top 10, in as many tries, on Pop Airplay, following “Good Luck, Babe!” (No. 1 for one week in September) and “Hot To Go!” (No. 9, October). She is the first artist to send at least three initial entries to the chart’s top 10 since Olivia Rodrigo went five-for-five from the start in 2021-23.‘Lose Control’ Hits 80 WeeksTeddy Swims’ “Lose Control,” which led the Hot 100 for a week in March 2024– and became the year’s top song– renters the top 10 (12-9). It logs an 80th week on the chart overall, becoming only the fourth title ever to reach the milestone since the survey began (on Aug. 4, 1958). Upon its 78th week, it surpassed Dua Lipa’s “Levitating” for the most time spent on the chart for a release on Warner Records. Most Weeks Spent on Hot 100:91 weeks, “Heat Waves,” Glass Animals, No. 1 peak (five weeks), beginning March 12, 202290, “Blinding Lights,” The Weeknd, No. 1 (four weeks), beginning April 4, 202087, “Radioactive,” Imagine Dragons, No. 3, July 6, 201380, “Lose Control,” Teddy Swims, No. 1 (one week), March 30, 202479, “Sail,” AWOLNATION, No. 17, Oct. 12, 201377, “Levitating,” Dua Lipa, No. 2, May 22, 202176, “I’m Yours,” Jason Mraz, No. 6, Sept. 20, 2008‘Die With a Smile’ & Rest of Top 10Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With a Smile” rises 3-2 on the Hot 100, following five nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 beginning in January. It adds a fourth week atop Radio Songs (63.3 million, up nearly 1%).Below “Luther,” Lamar logs three other songs in the Hot 100’s top 10: “Not Like Us,” which two weeks earlier rebounded for its third week at No. 1, drops 2-3; “TV Off,” featuring Lefty Gunplay, holds at No. 4, after reaching No. 2; and “Squabble Up” falls 5-10, following a week at No. 1 upon its debut in December.Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” jumps 9-5 on the Hot 100, following its record-tying 19 weeks at No. 1 beginning last July. It rules the multimetric Hot Country Songs chart for a 36th week.ROSÉ and Bruno Mars’ “APT.” pushes 7-6 on the Hot 100, after hitting No. 3.Plus, Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather” glides 8-7 on the Hot 100, after reaching No. 2. It tops the multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Alternative Songs charts for a 30th week each. On the former, it’s the first song by a woman artist to lead for at least 30 weeks; on the latter, it’s the second – and first by a woman in a lead role – after Zach Bryan’s “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves, reigned for 30 weeks in 2023-24.
March 5Mar 5 US HOT 100 SUMMARY AND REVIEW 4.03.25 #23 TOP TEN: Kendrick Lamar is down five spots to 10 with 'Sqaubble Up,' which opens the gap for 'Lose Control' to jump three spots up to 9. Chappell Roan's 'Pink Pony Club' is becoming the next big song at 8. Billie Eilish is still in the top ten with 'Birds Of A Feather' at 7, which sits below 'APT.' at 6. 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' has a surge from 9 to 5. Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl performance is still having effects on the chart with 'TV Off' at 4 and 'Not Like Us' at 3. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars continue their climb up the chart with 'Die With A Smile' up to 2, and taking the number one for its second consecutive week is 'Luther' by Kendrick Lamar and SZA. NEW ENTRIES: 99. Greenlight—Tate McRae (9/10) 90. Like I Do—Tate McRae (7/10) 89. Little Things—Ella Mai (6.4/10) I heard this a while back as part of Ella Mai's E.P. '3.' It's now four months later, and this has charted, and I'm not complaining. It reminds me of 'Heart Of A Woman' or something that reminds me of older style Beyoncé, with its 2000s R&B sound. I really like it; it's not special to me or marking anything new, but we haven't heard this in a while, and I'm very much open to hearing this sound more. 83. LV Bag—Don Toliver/J-Hope/Pharrell Williams/Speedy (3/10) The majority of people only seem to come to this song because a solo BTS member features on it (J-Hope), and when I saw this collaboration, I immediately knew that this was a one-way ride to failure; yes, it's rap crap. The only person's essence I detect in this is Don Toliver, who manages to spill his autotuned crap over the whole song and ruin it. I legit don't get how people can take him seriously; you can't even hear what he's saying in the song. 75. ExtraL - JENNIE/Doechii (4/10) Doechii is a great rapper but always fails miserably when it comes to a feature, and working with JENNIE is a recipe for disaster, especially with the past few singles showing disaster too. I don't necessarily know what's bad about this; it just doesn't do anything for me. It's not something I can easily connect to, and Doechii doesn't pack a flavour punch like she does on her solo songs. 74. Signs—Tate McRae (8/10) 69. Clouds—J. Cole (6/10) The first time I've rated something this high by J. Cole, which is good for him after he was making flop music for so long, this definitely feels more down-to-earth and something that Kendrick might make, although Lamar would add a crazy beat. 64. Bloodonmyhands—Tate McRae/Flo Milli (8/10) 58. Call me when you break up—Selena Gomez/Benny Blanco/Gracie Abrams (2.1/10). From the last single, this was so predictable; Selana and Gracie deliver a run-of-the-mill vocal performance with a really cheesy music video. And to top the disappointment, I found out in a month we will get a Selena and Benny album. I waited all this time for a Gomez project that could possibly be her last one, and then she delivers two singles that are poop and a massive dump on the music industry. The background is way too uninspired and is as basic as basic can be. You would've gotten more of a smile out of me if you had inserted a fart sound into the song. 54. Miss Possessive—Tate McRae (8.5/10) 53. Purple Lace Bra—Tate McRae (7.5/10) 44. Dear God—Tate McRae (8.2/10) 43. I Know Love—Tate McRae/The Kid Laroi (5.5/10) 22. Revolving Door—Tate McRae (6/10) Lots of love to Tate, but this is one of the weakest songs on her album. There were so many better choices she could've chosen as a main single, but she chose Revolving Door?! I don't get a world where this would make sense; this song sounds like a filler that would've fit on THINK LATER. I mean, it fits on this album too, but not that well. It has no catch to it at all, and the so-called chorus or hook has the exact same momentum as the start of the song. There's no build-up; it's just right in front of you, which is pretty boring if you ask me. Weak single. RE ENTRIES: 100. Weren't For The Wind—Ella Langley [It's ok.] 93. Backseat Driver—Kane Brown [I still don't care much about this] 82. Headlock—Imogen Heap [I'm shocked the trend is still lasting.] 81. Me Jalo - Fuerza Regida/Grupo Frontera [These acts get boring very easily.] 76. 2 Hands—Tate McRae [Not even in the top half of the album] NOTEABLE CHANGES: Songs that fell ten spots or more (excluding Drake and PND's album). 95. Hey Now—Kendrick Lamar/Dody6 (Down 14) 52. Busy Woman—Sabrina Carpenter (Down 25) [HIGHEST FALLER] 36. Please Please Please—Sabrina Carpenter (Down 11) Songs that climbed 10 spots or more: 67. Mutt—Leon Thomas (Up 30) [HIGHEST CLIMBER] 66. Loco—Neton Vega (Up 11) 65. I Ain't' Sayin'—Jordan Davis (Up 14) 63. Good News—Shaboozey (Up 12) 59. Worst Way—Riley Green (Up 19) 55. Indigo—Sam Barber/Avery Anna (Up 10) 51. I'm Gonna Love You—Cody Johnson/Carrie Underwood (Up 11) 48. Smile—Morgan Wallen (Up 10) 46. I Never Lie—Zach Top (Up 15) 41. No One Noticed—The Marias (Up 14) 39. BAILE INOLVIDABLE—Bad Bunny (Up 11) 38. Sailor Song—Gigi Perez (Up 15) 35. Liar—Jelly Roll (Up 16) 33. Who—Jimin (Up 11) 30. DTMF—Bad Bunny (Up 12) 16. Sports Car—Tate McRae (Up 31) BEST AND WORST: NEW entries: BEST—Greenlight—Tate McRae WORST—Call me when you break up—Gomez/Blanco/Abrams. The whole top 100: BEST—Beautiful Things—Benson Boone WORST—Somebody Loves Me—PARTYNEXTDOOR/Drake NEXT WEEK'S PREDICTIONS: Possible new entries from Benson Boone, Lizzo, Djo, and more.
