Jowell to announce TV licence rise

The television licence fee will rise by 3% in each of the next two years, BBC News 24 has reported.

The new deal, which will be outlined in full by Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell on Thursday, will rise to a maximum £151 by 2012.

The BBC had pressed the Government for an above-inflation increase on the current £131.50 fee over the next six years.

After the first two 3% rises the increases will slow before reaching the maximum agreed figure in 2012.

BBC director-general Mark Thompson, talking before the official announcement, described the expected figures as "a real disappointment".

In an email to staff he said the corporation would face "some very difficult choices" if forced to accept a below-inflation increase.

Unions warned that such a deal would lead to heavy job losses and would seriously hit programmes.

The Government has already announced a £600 million portion of the settlement will be "ring-fenced" to help pay for the digital switchover.

The deal will also ensure the £400 million move of some departments to Salford goes ahead.

Ms Jowell will follow her announcement by giving a keynote speech to the Oxford Media Convention. A spokeswoman for the BBC said the corporation would not comment further until the official announcement.

The BBC isn't worth £150 of my money, which I will have to pay in 2012. <_<

I'd rather they had adverts.

I have no prob with the licence fee

BBC produce quality programs on wildlife, period/costume dramas, politics, science, religion, quality dramas and so on whereas ITV is all chav tv, cheap imports, tacky game shows and so on

imagine what lack of choice we would have if BBC had to go down the ITV route

Okay, on the face of it it doest seem a bit much, BUT, £131 for the entire YEAR aint all that bad... How much do people pay monthly for cable/satellite..? £20/30 quid or thereabouts.....? Times that by 12, oh and then add on extras for the footie, films, etc..... Hmm, £131 doesn't seem so bad now does it...? BBC makes ORIGINAL drama, it does NOT rely on sh!tty American imports to pad out a schedule (for every "Lost or "24" there's about a DOZEN or so "Mutant X"'s...), it also does NOT continually REPEAT shows time and time again (unlike, say, Channel 5....) and it does NOT carry advertising.....

Let's stop all this bitching about the Beeb and look a hell of a lot more closely at the extremely POOR value for money that the likes of Sky are offering....

And by the way, the biggest critics of the BBC..? Look no further than the MURDOCH PRESS!!!!!!
