Posted January 18, 200718 yr http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f8/The_Last_King_of_Scotland.jpg only at number 5 in the chart! smoking aces higher up? is this because everyone has seen the film4 logo and thought 'well there no point in going to see it at the cinema as it will be on channel 4's channels every other week in a years time  . i say "Man you gotta go see it.!!!!" its a very good film. much better than the trio of bordom that was happyness, miss potter and smoking aces. excellent performance from Forest Whitiker as Idi Amin. in a performance that should win him the oscar. this is a performance where you think this is Amin not the bloke from Good Morning Vietnam, Ghost Dog etc etc. McAvoy and Washington also good in this film as well, with Washington banishing any thoughts of that irretating midget film from your mind (she was an annoying character in that film)!! actually she was so hot for once that anyone would allow themselves to get tourtured by a group of Amin's men for a night with her   also a good afrobeat soundtrack as well and a picture that bleeds the colour of africa off the screen. and a good ending comment as well!!!
January 20, 200718 yr Superb film, one with guts and a brain.... Whittaker is a shoe-in for the Oscar really, one of the most powerful, convincing performances I've seen an actor give in a while.. The way he actually brings across both the admirable qualities and the absolute terrifying insanity of Amin brings dimension and realism to the man, because it would've been so easy to just portray the evil, but Whittaker also manages to portray the jovial and paternal sides and even a bit of nobility.. That bit where he says "You have grossly offended your father" to Nicholas is probably one of the most terrifying, shivers-down-spine moments I've seen in a film for a long time... Who needs a silly 'horror' film when this film portrays the real horror, the real evil that men do...? My only issue with this film is, that I still dont feel very comfortable about having these white, European characters acting as conduits for African stories and narratives.... Did the director who made "Tsotsi" need a white guy to tell us about what life is like for the blacks living in townships in modern South Africa...?
May 22, 200718 yr I watched this on DVD at the weekend. Absolutely fantastic film. :o So gripping. But that scene in the airport at the end. Oh Lordy.... :puke2: :puke2: :puke2:
May 23, 200718 yr Outstanding movie, one of the best I have seen in the last few years, fully deserving of Oscar
May 23, 200718 yr a truly magnificent movie.... it gives you faith that there are still films of such quality and integity being produced. My one gripe is that James McAvoy was not given the credit he so rightly deserved - no Oscar nomination, even :o . Shocking.
October 21, 200816 yr When yesterday i went to watch The Last King Of Scotland and by the end of it so many people in my class (as well as the teachers) were saying that it shouldve been an 18 instead of a 15. Mainly cos of the violence and the way women are depicted and all the sex etc. Im guessing i was the only one that stood by the 15 certificate. OK it was a bit graphic in some scenes but isnt it better to expose the truth rather than keep it hidden? Most things that were in the film that Amin done happened - fact. So why try hide it or even try to tone it down? People were saying that there was no need to have a close up on the body that had been chopped up but again.. EXPOSING THE TRUTH.. May have been a bit vile but you cant hide the past. Also the film had a REASONABLE amount of graphic violence for a 15. It didnt exactly over do it... (Most people were just upset seeing James McAvoy hanging from his nipples) Anyway.. what do you think? should it have been an 18? Was there a need to show such violence?
October 22, 200816 yr I dont agree with an 18 Certificate for this film... The violence portrayed was a recreation of Idi Amin's actual torture tactics, therefore not gratuitous in the sense that something like "Saw" or "Hostel" is.... "Last King of Scotland" also has a historical and cultural context that the "torture porn" horrors do not have.... The violence in "Last King..." is not set up to desensitize, whearas I would argue that many of the "Saw" rip-offs are; also your point of identification in LSoS is with the person being tortured NOT with the torturers, in films like "Hostel" and "Saw", on a subconcious level you want the charaters to be tortured, they are disposable, whereas in a film like "Last King of Scotland" or "Rendition", you dont want the characters to suffer .... It's a totally different psychology...
October 24, 200816 yr also your point of identification in LSoS is with the person being tortured NOT with the torturers, in films like "Hostel" and "Saw", on a subconcious level you want the charaters to be tortured, they are disposable, whereas in a film like "Last King of Scotland" or "Rendition", you dont want the characters to suffer .... It's a totally different psychology... Did that come off in my post  Didnt mean it that way... As much as i may dispise James McAvoy after watch that film with a bunch of screaming girls that level of torture is not needed at all.. But theres one thing that i dont understand about certain peoples logic... Especially with the way that they were criticising the way women were being portrayed in the film.. I was like wtf.. This is the way women were made to look in those times and the irony is... Most of the people that were criticising the film were actually from Uganda themselves... Its like hello.. You would "rep" (represent) your country but you choose to ignore its history  Isnt that like one of the main points of the media also? To expose the truth and let the people know what is or what used to be out there.. Especially in a Historical film such as Last King Of Scotland... Even if it is based on a novel HUGE parts of the film are true...
