Do you believe that we should, if it can lead to cures of say cancer or spinal injuries, or should we not tamper with this because of ethics?

I am in favour of it, totally.. And I am utterly sick of listening to bloody religious-types who use their influence over politicians to have it banned.. Stem Cell research is VITAL to one day preventing such debilitating illnesses such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons... This is basically the same argument as we've always had when scientific and medical breakthroughs have been made - blood transfusions, forensic science, the study of anatomy, autopsies, transplants, all of which were deemed 'ungodly' at one point... At one point in history Doctors were actually forced to break the law because of ridiculous religious hang-ups with regards to operating on dead bodies...

Also, if you are against Stem Cell research and for animal testing, then you are a hypocrite of the worst kind IMO (hello Mr Blair, Mr Bush, I'm talking to you...).. So, it's okay to cut open animals for the 'betterment of mankind' but god forbid we actually experiment on our own species, even where consent is given...

The stem cells used for research are almost always slated to be destroyed anyway, they are taken for different reasons (usually in vitro fertilization). Some people still think it's murder. Very, very, very few people. Religious nutcases exclusively. The more popular objection is that it will lead to wider genetic manipulation.

But the slippery slope argument does NOT apply in science. Even if there's only a fine line in ethics between stem cells and living humans, the distinction is MASSIVE in terms of scientific experimentation. It's not as though using an emryonic stem cell for research will set a precent for killing babies and taking their brains or something f***ing ridiculous like that.

well said scott, total agreement m8!

I think as long as you are not killing a baby just for that purpose, and using a stillborn or something along those lines it is ok...

i agree

I'm against animal testing, but I don't really know what Stem Cell research involves so I can't say.

Stem Cell research is just that.. It's doing experiments on Human cells, not people, not a living, breathing human being, merely a few cells or aborted foetuses (which aren't wanted anyway, hence the fact they've been aborted by the birth mother..).. What is the point in wasting this valuable medical resource if it's eventually going to benefit millions...? These idiots who go on about the 'sanctitiy of life' and object to this research, I really hope get Alzheimers or Parkinsons or MS, because they have absolutely no fukkin' clue what life is like for the people who suffer from these debilitating illnesses.. If they did, I bet they'd bloody well change their tune...

I think we are all in agreement Scott, cannot understand the arguements against to be honest

I agree totally with what Scott has said too!

The argument against basically is that it might lead to human cloning... Erm, and just how would stopping legitimate research, which is accountable and open to scrutiny and peer review, into combatting the illnesses I Mentioned actually going to prevent some rogue Doctor from doing this anyway, even IF it is actually feasible (and frankly, I rather doubt it actually is tbh...)

I agree with most of what you said except the quoted paragraph. If that was true then anyone who is not vegetarian should not be against canibalism too.

I dont think that it's quite the same thing JJN... I was being very specific in my argument and I think you're just taking it to a slightly ridiculous extreme.. Cannibalism does not exist in a cultural context anymore, it tends to be only practiced by totally perverted, mentally disturbed individuals...

It's simple really, if you're in favour of animal testing to 'better mankind', than what's the problem with experimenting on a bunch of bloody cells from an aborted foetus ffs.....? Of course it's hypocrisy...
